Hiya, Im new in this forum! My name is DiamondsAndPearls, nice to meet you. Today I wanna talk abput the album Nursery Crime, from genesis.
It features a lot of amazing and iconic songs, like Harlequin or Fountain of Salmacis, and it also haves a lot of hidden jewels like Harold the Barrel, one of my fav genesis songs of all time. The special thing about this album is that the songs are all different fron each other, witb very varied topics and sounds, but all with that mark that only genesis can have. I just love it hehehe . The best of all is that it features long and short songs for equal, so U have both songs to listen in your house to relaz or to wait for the bus. I recommend it a lot, and if U know something thats simmilar recomend it, please!

It sure is a masterpiece, you might want to hear the rest of 70s Genesis, if you don't know it already. If you do, there are tons of quality symphonic prog, so I suggest browsing PA and exploring!

Well hello and welcome to the forum. Nursery Crime is indeed a wonderful album and a great place to start with Symphonic prog. Prog groups have a lot of similarities but all have their own unique sound. I would suggest you continue with Genesis and go with Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound. To stay in the symphonic sub genre, I would suggest In The Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson and Fragile or Close to the Edge by Yes. All very different from one another but are classic albums. And enjoy.

Welcome to PA! For sure this is a brilliant album, I love all of it....But I am biased as Genesis are my #2 all time fav group. Tongue
I'm a big fan of Harold The Barrel too.

BTW, are you a Prince fan??

Wow, maybe the first person on here to have a Prince song in their username. ;)

Anyway, yes "Nursery Cryme" is great. I find it to be more consistent over all than Foxtrot even though it has Supper's Ready on it. "The fountain of Sulmacis" and "The Musical Box" are two of the best Genesis songs of all time. "Return of the Giant Hogweed" and "Seven Stones" are very good too. Heck, the whole thing is great.

Similar to Nusery Cryme? Well, try the Genesis album right before it which is Trespass and the one right after it which is Foxtrot. Also, maybe "Geese and the Ghost" by Anthony Phillips who was the original guitarist for Genesis. He didn't play on NC of course but apparently some of those songs were written when he was still in the band. Maybe someone on here can verify that and say which ones specifically.

Apparently, "The Musical Box" was based on an acoustic piece developed by Ant Phillips and Mike called "F#". The demo of that track is featured in Ant's Archive Collection, Volume One, released in 1998.

Nursery Cryme - my first prog album. It took me into a very strange world of musical boxes, man-eating plants and people who cut their toes off. Extremely weird but I was hooked for life then.

An album that would define many other albums, in the gabriel era of the group.

Indeed a wonderful album but the word masterpiece gets used too often on PA.
It ranks just behind Foxtrot and SEBTP...which respectively have Suppers Ready and Firth of Fifth ...Box, and Fountain on Cryme aren't quite as strong imho.

Hogweed is cool and Salmacis pretty good
The rest is ok. Bit dull and twee

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Nursery Cryme is my personal favorite of Genesis. IMO, Harold the Barrel should have been released as a single.

Actually Genesis Live was the first prog album I bought and Musical Box helped me to recover from the Beatles.

PS: I must add than today I'm still in remission.

This is exactly how I've always felt.

Fountain is the strongest track on Nursery Cryme for me!

In the end, we have them all to listen to and enjoy Smile.

I had the cd but sold it. Trespass was really good and I was expecting a step up from that on this album but it was a step down. 2 new members changed the balance a bit. They got back on track with Foxtrot

It would be a Cryme to give Genesis' masterpiece album anything less than five stars. Smile
