When I first came across this KC concert (11/13/73, Rome) I was blown away for many reasons. But perhaps the most astonishing reason is that this lineup adds power to Cat Food (youtube linked down below) that the studio version was lacking. Maybe it’s Wetton’s crunchy-ass bass. Maybe it’s Bruford’s tingy ride cymbal. Or maybe it’s even Cross’s violin overtop of Fripp. Regardless, I need someone to wake me up from my trance; is this version of Cat Food better or worse than the Lake-era versions?

Thank you and welcome to PA! i'd never heard this version, it is very enjoyable! I agree, Wetton's voice and bass playing add a great deal to a song that was something of a "fluff piece" in the KC catalog! |

Wetton definitely turns it into more of a hard rock song, which is what Wetton is into, but the original has Keith Tippet's great piano work and Greg Lake's satirical faux Beatles vocals.
I like Wetton, but subtlety is not his strong point. |

Original for me.
Tippett playing like a cat running across piano keys is sublime.

The original is far more distinctive and offbeat, which makes it more interesting. Lakes vocal are better as well.

well, I'd never heard this Wetton-line-up version (not even aware they'd ever done it, FTM) and I enjoyed it tremendously. But yeah, the original album version is way better , but since there was no way of repeating the loony-piano formula, so I'd say they did a more than correct adaptation. Too bad they didn't play it more often onstage. |

This one is difficult. I do like the overall performance better with the Wetton line-up, but it's certainly missing that jazzy Tippet's piano, which is the main reason the song is remarkable.

Everything is better with Wetton on it.....er, wait a minute...that's spicy mustard...never mind.
Seriously I love his vocals but as several have pointed out the Tippet piano work is awesome.

Well, I'm going with the Wetton, Buford and Cross version. This was probably done close to Larks' Tongues. So, pretty much the best line up.
