I don't think he is underrated per see, but compared to many other prog keyboard players from hes time periode/generation, hes contribution or work on keyboards arent as garded as could be expected.
But based om many describtions from reviews on here much praize is found about hes playing on albums. I feel hes stature should be much higher, on the accounts of innovation, use of technology and arrangements of keyboards. Hes ability to produce the various sounds from various keybords is worth praising. Hes playing is very cool nd he also got a cool and laid back stage pressence. He is also a master of the rock hook. Is Manfred Mann the garded secret of prog keyboardist? South Africas most famous prog musician yet. Edited by Icarium - September 20 2020 at 11:53 |

Interesting - I had never thought of Manfred Mann as 'underrated keyboardist', but has made me want to listen to him again .
Thought that his greatest strength was his reinterpretation of Dylan and Springsteen . Manfred Mann's Earthband take on 'Father of Day , Father of Night' ( from 'Solar Fire' ) is very moving.

Many great keyboard players appear to be underrated when compared to those who are better known such as Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman. But that is not true. Mann is exceptional as is Rod Argent and John Hawken. They just didn't get the same press.

I feel he have an interesting and spessial role in the history of rock n roll. He has been a pressance since forever yet also in a cool and laidvack way and always with an integraty as a trained pianist, a sence of seriousness to the craft. Hes roots in jazz conservatory training shines through hes playing. Hes a master of the keyboard with great fast runs on the keyboard.

Big fan of Visionary Mountain , a Joan Armatrading tune with wicked solos from Mick Rogers (talk of an underrated guitarist !) and Manfred on synths.

I'd agree he is a superb keyboards player, but he's under publicised rather than underrated. But I'd also throw in Mick Rogers as an under publicised guitarist as well. In fact the whole band don't get the appreciation they deserve on here as they were pretty big in the 70s and a damned good band. And they are proper prog.

Nightingales and Bombers is a phantastic album! On my personal "best albums of all times" list there is only a single album of a "big 6" band that tops it. Actually all four musicians are in best form there. I agree about Mick Rogers, but Chris Slade is a force of nature on that album, and the bass is superb as well.

Hi,
Strange. I have never thought of anyone as under the trampoline or over that bus ... the bands are way too different, with material that varies very widely, and making a statement about this guy better than the other ... is a bit strange ... it's weird that some folks think that RW is bigger or better than Manfred Mann, when he was already playing in a band, and having a hit before that other guy probably got out of bed to go to school! And Manfred Mann does not have to apologize for anything ... his career has been excellent all along with a lot of very nice material ... and at least one version of the band that was special (The Earth Band) ... and put together a lot of magnificent material. I always felt that his signature was that EXCESS was not necessary, and using that instrument for one solo in the whole performance, was bizarre and silly, and you carry 20 of them things to play 10 solos alone! RW, don't get me wrong, is very good ... but I would choose Manfred Mann any minute because I know the music will be more important than his solos! NP: Waiter, Waiter, there is a fly in this soup!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

What he did with the Springsteen song Blinded By The Light is genius . A bona fide prog hit although its the album version with the wonderful guitar solo that really hits the mark. I also like the later Masque album he did which includes a very beautiful version of Paul Weller's Start. I also enjoy the live album Live In Budapest a lot. That was probably one of the most 'professional' bands I've ever heard. I love that sudden stop and start at the end of Davy's On The Road Again especially. You have to be an incredibly well drilled unit to pull that off.

^ the bass and drum pocket in Blinded by the Light is so very fat and confident. I also like the bands more sensative side in songs like Questions
