I listen to some of the playlist while doing other things, not always fully aware what goes on (stuff to do...), but what struck me: Coco Rosie is clearly the best of Logan's (first) bunch, very expressive. The Kinks song surprised me, I didn't know them like this, and I liked it a lot. Gordon Lightfoot wasn't bad either. Of course (?) I knew Look What They've Done to my Song, but I hadn't heard it for ages, and there are some nice childhood memories connected to it. I love that song. Kathy's Song is something from Simon & Garfunkel's catalogue that I didn't have on my radar. I've heard this before, but it didn't leave an impression; I actually don't know why. Very nice song, if maybe not their most memorable.

Well done I prophesy disaster for nominating Tropicana, that's really something different. I know that Devo album; it's very dependent on mood what I think of it. Seven out of ten days it leaves me cold, on the remaining three I admire its originality. Kid No More by Ambrosia is certainly not normally my kind of style, but this one is very enjoyable. About half way through now.

The Mary Black song will be considered "out of competition," so if you want to suggest another in its place, you certainly are welcome to.

Some thoughts. Not commenting on each song.

Greg (Logan): I enjoyed Gary Numan - “I Die, You Die” and a nostalgic throwback to the early 80's synthesizer heavy new wave. My favorite of your selections. With CocoRosie - “Lemonade”, the music I liked, and it took a few listens for the vocals to work but still, it seemed too affected for me. I read through some of the comments in YouTube and there was reference to 'cursive singing'. I had not heard of that so looked into it, and this article described it as: "a style characterised by diphthongisation, wherein vowel sounds are stretched beyond what is necessary."

Nickie (Snicolette): The Kink's song was my favorite. Fever Tree came close, maybe the same. It was tough to decide since it was comparing apples to oranges. I dug that heavy psyche vibe. I do need to listen to more music from that period.

Cristi: The Child "Little Light," Black Trip "Putting Out The Fire," and Morten Harket "Burn Money Burn" are my favorites of your selections.

Lewian: Pinback "Devil You Know" stood out. The bass line had a bit of "surf" vibe to it.  I think I would appreciate Caparezza more if I understood the lyrics. Most of the time in these polls, understanding the language hadn't been necessary for me to enjoy different songs, but not with this one.

That's it for now. Will continue over the next few days with the rest.

Glad you enjoyed The Kinks and Fever Tree, both.  Very different!  And the sweet love song was a departure from the norm for The Kinks, but what a lovely departure it was.  Probably my favourite love song, ever.  I thought the sweetness of The Kinks and Gordon Lightfoot needed the balance of the terribly under-noticed Fever Tree.

And getting caught up, here is more from Logan and continuing with dr uw"

Logan:  Buffy Sainte-Marie “The Vampire”  Her tremolo voice is perfect for scary songs….I really loved her “I’m Gonna Be A Country Girl Again,” LP, have a sentimental feel for it.  The Cardigans “The Great Divide”  Will this be The Cardigans song that makes me “get” why people like them?  Baby voice not my fave thing, but let’s see what happens.  I liked the music, but not her voice.

dr wu23:  Savoy Brown “A Hard Way To Go”  I remember this, also saw Savoy Brown play live, so will have to disqualify it for my own vote.  What a catchy song.  Great bass line!  Their vocals remind me a little of Spirit on this one.  Leon Russell “Roll Away the Stone”  Another great tune from a great performer. Saw Leon Russell a couple of times.  A real original, true to his sound and roots.  The Guess Who “Undun”  One of my favourite bands of all time.  I know this, but what a great piece of classic rock music.  I bow down to Burton Cummings.

OK, suitkees wants something more innovative.... here we are. Of course this is properly progressive music that puts most bands on PA to shame, but is for some incomprehensible reason not listed here. A true monument this one. (For the Spanish speaking among you with Spanish subtitles. Wink)
Play it loud!!

House of Lies English lyrics here:

This one is from a phantastic solo album of Neubauten's FM EInheit. Vocals again Blixa, in Japanese if I'm not mistaken. (I read somewhere that he sings here "no, I'm not xxx (?), I'm a musician" but can't find that anymore.)

oh wow... Doc bringing it with authority!!!  God I love that song..  though No Time will always be my favorite from them. Forget what the geeks and freaks say.. hands down the best band to ever come from north of the border

Ashley Cummings might be, with the possible exception of Mickey Thomas, the single best overlooked male vocalist in all rock.  Instantly recognizable.. and what range..

too funny though...  the 7 degree of Mick the King of Karaoke...  I've had some wild first dates before though none will ever top the first with the Spawn of Satan..  I once dated my best friends sister who had seen me and band play and she loved my voice..

so we were at this bar.. both half gone.. and it had a Karokee machine up there.. and she said to me.. I'll dance if you'll sing a favorite song for me.. it's one of the songs on the selection list... I said you first.. and she proceeded to mount the table and dance like there was no tomorrow... so i did my half

and that song..  ummm hmmm.. BTO.. You Aint' Seen Nothing... and naturally being insprired and sh*t faced as I was.. I nailed it.

Sorry not commenting on other peoples selections yet and am just focusing on some comments on my own choices again. I've been trying to get my stairs and deck painted, and it has ended up being a much more challenging project than I anticipated. The only painting I've ever done much of is finger painting, but it's the stripping that has been so challenging, which is disheartening because I had fancied myself a pretty good stripper.

That is the one of mine I wished to nominate, and I started questioning that with other comments, but I will pick "Lemonade" as my choice. Best, I don't know, but to me it is the freshest of my choices, and it is the one that I would most like to play again. With the Numan I have a very long history -- an acquaintance gave me his Telekon LP knowing I liked Numan. I like the expressive theatricality of the CocoRosie song.

Thanks, Geo. Oh, yes, very affected singing. Theatrical I might say, and the video is somewhat theatre of the absurd, and it's whimsical, meets the Grand Guignol (maybe not so grand, but somewhat Guignol). ;) Interesting article. I think of Bjork the most when I hear that CocoRosie, who I think also uses a similar diphthongisation, but that singing is taken to an absurdist level with CocoRosie, which works for me. It's got a kind of affected quality that also reminds me somewhat of The Cure with "Lullaby". "Lemonade" will be my nomination, by the way. I like that it's rather "different" and whimsical...

If you are to get into The Cardigans, then the post twee pop period might be best for you. Perhaps my favourite The Cardigans song, "Beautiful One" is off an early (mid 90s period) album and is her at her most baby-voiced. Perhaps it's my infantile nature. You would probably appreciate her vocals more on later albums, such as on Long Gone Before Daylight from 2003.

Here is the opening track from that:

I prefer her early period, but that's also because the music interests me more, and is more whimsical I find (and has retro qualities that I like). I do value whimsy. The above is I think a well-made song, but it's also plainer for me, less magical, more mundane.

I'm reminded of Kate Bush. My most listened to album of hers has been her debut, and on that she she has these rather twee girlish vocals (and in her case, theatrical, affected, over-the-top vocals on songs like "Wuthering Heights" -- I do prefer her remake).

LOL on the stripper aside.  LOL

I will give her a listen but the baby girl voice is not my thing at all.  I really love the Cardiacs-related William Drake "Rising of the Lights," recording, however....so maybe this time, it's just the singer.

Logan:

---CoCoRosie: good and interesting composition, original but for my taste it was ruined by the musical arrangement, by the artificial sound.

---Gary Numan: good rhythm, but to be sincere I don't like this song, too commercial, and too synthetic sound.

---Susan Christi: For my taste it is definitely the best, great voice.

Snicolette:

My fave is the song by Gordon Lightfoot. He got style, and his voice is wonderful. But on the other hand the psychedelia by Fever Tree is very good, and the song is very pleasent.

The Kinks? Good, strange atmosphere for that group. But a flash is missing.

I apologize for not having been more active. During the past couple of days, I was busy with Virtual ProgDaySmile. Now lots of listening to do! In any case, I am going to nominate the Anúna song, "Deep Dead Blue". Sorry for not having provided more choices! This time I found myself stumped.

Dr Wu23: Wow, what a good listen, these three in a row. Savoy Brown, Leon Russell and The Guess Who deliver three great classic songs (or three classic great songs)! Knew them before, but it was long ago that I've heard them.

Logan: I like the song (writing and playing) of Buffy Sainte-Marie, but gosh I do hate the tremolo in her singing (it's the same problem I have wit a lot of Joan Baez: wonderful songs in general, but the tremolo ruins it for me - a personal thing, maybe I can get a doctor's prescription for it). Of The Cardigans, on the contrary, I always loved the singing and the music too, but I don't have any of their albums (maybe I should repair that omission in my collection). This is a nice song.

Lewian: Hehe... Thank you, you reassured me. I can understand you need the Einstürzende Neubauten to compensate for your Nick Kershaw flaw. Wink Great choice! I actually didn't know the FM Einheit spin-off. It's nice, but it doesn't have the strength of Haus der Lüge. Very strong lyrics too (in general, with EN - and yes, I do understand German too).
