Greg (Logan): I enjoyed Gary Numan - “I Die, You Die” and a nostalgic throwback to the early 80's synthesizer heavy new wave. My favorite of your selections. With CocoRosie - “Lemonade”, the music I liked, and it took a few listens for the vocals to work but still, it seemed too affected for me. I read through some of the comments in YouTube and there was reference to 'cursive singing'. I had not heard of that so looked into it, and this article described it as: "a style characterised by diphthongisation, wherein vowel sounds are stretched beyond what is necessary."

Logan:  Buffy Sainte-Marie “The Vampire”  Her tremolo voice is perfect for scary songs….I really loved her “I’m Gonna Be A Country Girl Again,” LP, have a sentimental feel for it.  The Cardigans “The Great Divide”  Will this be The Cardigans song that makes me “get” why people like them?  Baby voice not my fave thing, but let’s see what happens.  I liked the music, but not her voice. 

dr wu23:  Savoy Brown “A Hard Way To Go”  I remember this, also saw Savoy Brown play live, so will have to disqualify it for my own vote.  What a catchy song.  Great bass line!  Their vocals remind me a little of Spirit on this one.  Leon Russell “Roll Away the Stone”  Another great tune from a great performer. Saw Leon Russell a couple of times.  A real original, true to his sound and roots.  The Guess Who “Undun”  One of my favourite bands of all time.  I know this, but what a great piece of classic rock music.  I bow down to Burton Cummings.

Sorry not commenting on other peoples selections yet and am just focusing on some comments on my own choices again. I've been trying to get my stairs and deck painted, and it has ended up being a much more challenging project than I anticipated. The only painting I've ever done much of is finger painting, but it's the stripping that has been so challenging, which is disheartening because I had fancied myself a pretty good stripper.

That is the one of mine I wished to nominate, and I started questioning that with other comments, but I will pick "Lemonade" as my choice. Best, I don't know, but to me it is the freshest of my choices, and it is the one that I would most like to play again. With the Numan I have a very long history -- an acquaintance gave me his Telekon LP knowing I liked Numan. I like the expressive theatricality of the CocoRosie song.

Thanks, Geo. Oh, yes, very affected singing. Theatrical I might say, and the video is somewhat theatre of the absurd, and it's whimsical, meets the Grand Guignol (maybe not so grand, but somewhat Guignol). ;) Interesting article. I think of Bjork the most when I hear that CocoRosie, who I think also uses a similar diphthongisation, but that singing is taken to an absurdist level with CocoRosie, which works for me. It's got a kind of affected quality that also reminds me somewhat of The Cure with "Lullaby". "Lemonade" will be my nomination, by the way. I like that it's rather "different" and whimsical...

If you are to get into The Cardigans, then the post twee pop period might be best for you. Perhaps my favourite The Cardigans song, "Beautiful One" is off an early (mid 90s period) album and is her at her most baby-voiced. Perhaps it's my infantile nature. You would probably appreciate her vocals more on later albums, such as on Long Gone Before Daylight from 2003.

I prefer her early period, but that's also because the music interests me more, and is more whimsical I find (and has retro qualities that I like). I do value whimsy. The above is I think a well-made song, but it's also plainer for me, less magical, more mundane.

I'm reminded of Kate Bush. My most listened to album of hers has been her debut, and on that she she has these rather twee girlish vocals (and in her case, theatrical, affected, over-the-top vocals on songs like "Wuthering Heights" -- I do prefer her remake).
