Interactive Poll #18 for Real: Short and No Suites

Mike: Took out my thoughts on Ambrosia (very hometown band to me, they’re also from San Pedro and I knew them personally).   Beck “Girl” Catchy, poppy song, nice twangy, twisty guitars.  Enjoyed the video, too, more “hometown” (LA) scenes and the MAD Magazine references. The Avett Brothers “Swept Away” Some banjo for Micky here.  Big Americana-type band in Nashville the years I lived there and with good reason.  Not something I really listen to a lot, but it’s refreshing once in a while.  The Low Anthem “To Ohio” This is more the style of brushing-up-against-Americana that I enjoy.  Have never heard them, but really enjoy the harmonized vocals and understated sound.  Will probably be looking up more of them. 

Raff:  The Creatures “But Not Them”  Very energetic art rock/punk edged (at least this one), this evokes a jungle vibe, with the drums and the heat in the lyrics.  Anuna “Deep Dead Blue”  much more what I enjoy (as you probably know already!).  Hypnotic, angelic voices in a minor key.  What’s not to like? 

Micky:  Modest Mouse “Satin In A Coffin”  A band I know my son likes, now my time to hear something.  Already like the title….As promised, banjo and some edgy vocals, made me laugh!  I have a special place in my heart for f-you songs.  😊  Neil Young “Old King”  You already know how much I love Neil Young.  And dogs.  Poor old King.  R.E.M. “Wendell Gee” This is my favourite R.E.M. LP.  The whole thing is just stellar.  And this song is one of the reasons why.  Heart “Dreamboat Annie”  Very familiar with this, and what a great Karaoke story to go with it!  Shoulda got that on film, Micky.  You also know how I feel about the too-long for this poll “Bluebird.”  The Hollies “Stop Stop Stop”  As you probably could guess, I remember this one well, also.  What a time that was, so much experimentation.  This song is what made my first husband think of using his banjo as a substitute for a saz until he got the real thing when he was recruited into a Middle Eastern music and dance act.  You can hear echoes of what The Kaleidoscope were doing, as well.  Here is a Kaleidoscope piece, "Banjo," David Lindley solo on this one.  Can't get the video to post, so using a link, instead.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2_N3ae_mC0&t=22s&ab_channel=ErickTovarVenegas

Lorenzo:  Morphine “Honey White”  With all of the horns, reminds me a bit of Roy Wood, but the voice is kind of what I think of as a lazy voice (which is not a criticism), it’s kind of drawly.  Definitely a well-done rocker.  Afterhours “Male di miele” Hard punkish edge to this, rollicking song.  Bruce Springsteen “Candy’s Room”  a rocker from Bruce this time, with a guitar solo that hearkens to The Yardbirds.  Kind of a sad song to me, lyrically.
