I'm continuing the series of threads after the successes of "Will we ever see a new Yes studio album?" and "Will we ever see a new Camel studio album?" It's been more than two decades since the previous Genesis album Calling All Stations (which features Ray Wilson instead of Phil Collins), and almost three decades since the last studio album by the three man line up, We Can't Dance. Since they have announced that they will be touring again, do you think they will ever make another studio record? |

Well, I think Collins said the usual "probably not, never say never" to the press on the subject of a new studio album, which is what Genesis have been saying for the past 20 years. They haven't made a single album in the past 20 years. So, unless the new decade brings a new definition to Genesis's "probably no, possibly yes"s, no, sadly not.

I think it's unlikely that they'd still be up for such an endeavour. The result probably wouldn't be very good either.

I guess their best shot at it would be joining forces with Steve Hackett, who has remained active all this time. And really, by now, I guess Genesis might have more interest from the prog crowd than the pop one.

I doubt Hackett would be interested in a proper re-union of the four man line up (he has said as much), but maybe he would be willing to feature as a guest on a new album by the three man line up. He already does a lot of guest appearances on other people's albums, so why not on his old band mates album?

Neither Hackett or Gabriel will join Phil, Mike and Tony to record a new Genesis album, I suspect they have been trying to do this for the past 10 years to no avail, more than what we have been hearing about in the press or interviews.
Phil is no longer able to drum let alone stand on stage and sing, so who will drum on the album? This is what happens when people get old! Who is going to write the music and lyrics? They all have a ton of material I bet ready to record, but none of it is Genesis material, rather all solo stuff. Screw the ridiculous thought that prog-music would be coming from them...why?? So the 100K prog fans in the world would be happy... All the prog community will do is bitch and moan that it's nothing like Foxtrot or SEBtP. Now the Classic Rock community would be happier than pigs in mud, and make the album go platinum!

The Watch is the best surrogate for classic Genesis. Should they release a new album, I'll listen to it.

I don't care if they ever put another note to tape, I just want to see them live once. Three man, four man, five man, doesn't matter. That said, I'd like to see all five of them live in some way or another. And I really think Gabriel is long overdue for a proper solo album.

I don't know about a new PG album. That could happen but who knows when. As for the five of them getting back together for a live show that seems extremely unlikely to me. I've only seen Genesis live once(in 2007)and as great as it was it was good enough for me(that version of the band anyway). It's like how I have no desire to see Yes again although seeing anyone perform relayer in it's entirety is tempting.

Yeah it seems very unlikely you'll get all five on the same stage. I would love to see the trio, then see Steve and Gabriel on solo tours. As for a Gabriel album, I just don't see why he wouldn't eventually want to make one more? Not necessarily right now, but while he still can. Put a proper cap on his studio catalogue. Perhaps he just doesn't have much inspiration to write anymore. I know he keeps himself busy in other very noble and charitable ways, but I can't help but imagine he must have some musical ideas from the past decade or so worth fleshing out.

Yeah, I don't know. He did release that collaborative thing called Big Blue Ball a while back but I kind of doubt there's something similar sitting in his vaults. He does seem to take a while to record new material though. Maybe he should collaborate with Boston or Tool.

I don't know about Boston, but a Tool collaboration could sound like this PG/NIN mashup. |

Genesis has sucked since 1980. If they have sucked for the past 40 years, no one cares if they release another album.

I hope not.
It would probably be embarrassingly bad.

No, just the ones who come on PA and continually vote them as the greatest prog band. I have no interest in Genesis fans who love Sussudio or one of Phil Collins' movie romance tunes. For them, I certainly hope there is a new album they can swoon over.
