Sonata Arctica: I’d say more melodic than catchy to me.

Kingdom Come: Is this the same band that came out in the late 80’s sounding like they were trying to rip off Led Zep and Whitesnake? Here they sound like the Scorpions to me.

Rosu si Negru: This also sounds like it should be part of an 80’s soundtrack. Maybe as the intro to a TV show. 

Of all those, I like IRIS the best, although Rosu si Negru is quite catchy to me. Funny that I have no idea what either song is about.

Doc was tricky here. He previously posted the instrumental "Lancaster Gate" in poll #3. I remember voting for that one. Even added a few of their albums onto my Amazon cloud, including Casualties of Retail.

Whoops!  I accidentally skipped the first part of my thoughts on yours, George and moved right on to the second part.  

Here, is my initial impressions of Imperial Teen and L.A. Guns:    

Tygers of Pan Tang “Hellbound” begins with a riff to catch the ear, heavy vocals and some flashy guitar playing follow.  L.A Guns “Never Enough”  Definitely one of the darlings of the L.A. hair metal scene when I was living/working there, all over KNAC radio.  

Thanks also for the Band-Maiko song.  I love the beauty of the traditional Japanese costuming and the culture (no thanks, foot binding, of course) of the calligraphy, tea ceremony, and their musical heritage.  Fun to see them rock it up.  Smile

George:  Imperial Teen “You’re One”  Nice classic intro!  I liked the Alt Rock era a lot.  Looking forward to hearing the other ones by this configuration” Yoo Hoo” Very catchy and a funny video, looks like a San Fernando Valley house (and likely was).  “Everything” I liked the male and female vocals mixing with this one.  “Out From Inside”  People gotta go and live sometimes in between their records.  Why didn’t these guys get more love from radio?  Catchy indeed, all around.

Initial impressions on Jaketejas and Lewian:

Jaketejas:  Glen Adams Affair “Just a Groove”  You definitely got the general idea.  You can do more than one, and vote for up to 3, once voting begins.  First disco entry of the bunch and pretty catchy, too.

Lewian: Pinback “Tripoli”  Nice sort of an almost round, with layered vocals, repetitive background that changes just enough to keep interest.  Kind of dark humour in the lyrics.  A different feel than most here, as expected, also fits the bill, as I’ve come to expect from your entries.   Nik Kershaw “These Tears”  Well crafted pop material, as one would expect from Nik Kershaw.  Foals “Exits”  I like the bell-like almost oriental keys repeating and the backwards (?) keys or guitars, not sure what it is, but nice effect and catchy.  Bombay Bicycle Club “Always Like It”  This one has one of those guys who are sort of doing that biting off enunciation that is very popular.  I like the bouncy little guitar thing going on and the punch drums and bass with it.  Two Door Cinema Club “I Can Talk” Shimmery start, then lyrics start with some nice layering to them….the chorus is definitely catchy.  I prefer this vocal to the Bombay Bicycle Club guy, both are kind of “talky,” but am not a big fan of the bitten off words thing.  Everything Everything “Spring Sun Winter Dread” A song of wanting eternal youth…sorry, guy, it’s gonna happen (if you’re lucky) pretty passionate vocals.  I could see this being a teen anthem, certainly.

Casualties of Retail and Soapbox Heroes are both very good LP's. Gutter Anthems is good also...a band that never really found a large enough audience.
All of their music is melodic and 'catchy' to me....albeit from a modern Celtic rock pov.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Thanks snicolette for feedback; chances are I won't be able to comment on everything. I heard a few and I must say, catchy means different things to different people... Wink From those I have heard, I'd probably put Yello first.

I guess my own choice for final nomination  is between Pinback and Foals. Both of these bands are among my all time favourites.  Any further input on that one is very welcome.

You had said that you were busy this week...Yes, "catchy" is kind of like "guilty pleasure."  Lots of things make something catchy.  This time around I thought of what I felt should have been bigger hits and weren't and concentrated on an era.  

Foals and Pinback, both had a repetitive thing going, I think I personally liked Foals better, but I am certainly no expert!  Foals just suited my taste better, which is probably a death-knell for what could be popular, lol!

The Iris song is rather ambiguous lyrically, harmless, the title means "the rain of dreams" so one interpretation is it's chase your dreams kind of song. It's ambiguous and harmless because they had to watch out in those days of bleak communism, what they say lyrically, censors would ban an artist for ridiculous reasons often (and Iris, without even trying to be rebels, for lack of a better word, were banned three times in the 80s, their popularity among teens of the times bothered the system as well). 

The Rosu si Negru song is just a love song. Released if I remember right in 1988 as well.

Today I listened through the playlist and I will give some general impressions (there are too many songs to comment them all...). First, I think there is some confusion between" up-tempo" and "catchy", but please (no, please...) don't ask me to define "catchy". Ermm
I liked most of the songs put up here. There are some rock-ballads, some beautiful songs, some real surprises, and a few real catchy songs, to my ears. Some tracks that were good surprises to me (Jarboli, Paola Turci, Eye to Eye), some good songs, but not necessarily of the catchy kind (Raf - very romantic-, Nik Kershaw, Portishead, Loud Sugar, Pinback...), some good (hard) rock (with a nod to BAND-MAID and the party-rock of Slave Raider, when it comes to the catchy kind), some catchy songs that make you want to be in a pub with a beer in the hand (Modena Ramblers, Young Dubliners, Enter the Haggis - but these last deserve better than that), and some real catchy songs. Of the catchy kind I note Rosu si Negru, Gogol Bordello (I love this one!), Gorillaz (they were made to be catchy...), Everything Everything and Imperial Teen (very much like both You're One and Everything - kind of King Missile meet The Kinks (or something).

Too much to see straight Smile But I'm waiting for more and for the nominations ! Beer
