When I realised that I wanted to nominate a Yello track, I still had to choose which one. "Angel No" was one of the choices that I considered. "Oh Yeah" is disqualified by the rules of this poll even though I liked this track before it became well-known. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Somewhat limited contribution this time due to travelling... Tripoli by Pinback. First song I heard of them, best introduction any band could get. These Tears by Nik Kershaw, 80s hit machine still supercatchy in 2012. |

I have no idea what this game is, or how it's played. You want catchy? This is one catchy groove:

More thoughts, with some more from George and new additions from Scott and Dr wu23.
George: Tygers of Pan Tang “Hellbound” begins with a riff to
catch the ear, heavy vocals and some flashy guitar playing follow. L.A Guns “Never Enough” Definitely one of the darlings of the L.A.
hair metal scene when I was living/working there, all over KNAC radio. Band-Maid “Thrill” Kind of novelty metal with
their look. Pretty hooky stuff in this
vein. Scott: Slave Raider “Make Some Noise” Definitely more of the hair/glam kind of stuff that was the 80’s scene in LA. Loudness “Crazy Nights” The Japanese spin on glam/heavy metal. Marshall stacks, too! Certainly catchy for that style, on both fronts. Dr wu23: Enter the Haggis “Casualties of Retail” I have heard of them (love the name!) but had never heard them before. Not a fan of haggis itself, but this one is probably going to keep coming back to my mind. Always up for a new Celtic twist. 😊 Shoes “Tomorrow Night” And now for something completely different (than Enter the Haggis). Kind of pop-ish, like the jangly guitars and smooth vocals. Tonio K. “The Funky Western Civilization” More in the vein of the metal/glam stuff previously with a touch of Jerry Lee Lewis goes punk, twangly wangly guitars and saxes. |

Well ... since we were allowed non-Prog songs ... guilty as charged
The bass really gets popping at the end. Whew!!! I suddenly have an urge to find a roller skating rink. I think the "It's ..." is implied for the name of the song ... if you need one that starts with an "i" That bass harmonic at 4:59 is perfect! Edited by Jaketejas - August 07 2020 at 16:36 |

Here are some British bands that came up at about the same time to redefine Indie music, and they have some very very addictive stuff, a stunning reservoir of catchiness. It's difficult enough to settle on one song of any of these, so at least I'll play all the bands to you. Foals have at the very least half a dozen insanely catchy songs that shout "nominate me!" at me. Here's Exit. Bombay Bicycle Club - Always Like It Two Door Cinema Club are surely not the leaders of that pack, but I Can Talk is irresistible. Last not least here are the sophisticated and tricky Everything Everything - Spring Sun Winter Dread |

Thank you for explaining the rules. I think I'll watch from the sidelines and see how it goes. Also, my job is kind of taking over my life at the moment.
I don't know if that song was a big hit or not. It's "Just a Groove" I heard a long time ago and got stuck in my head for 40 years. I guess that qualifies for the "catchy" part. |

Well, it's really Cristi's rules for this one...but was going over what we've typically done....So the big no-no was no big hits. And since it's in the non-prog section, no one who's a PA artist.

Same here. I knew "Oh Yeah" before it was a big hit and loved that entire album. It seems I still find new things about it everytime I listen to it, and I have become a huge Yello fan because of it. Love all of their music even though I'm not as familiar with their last two albums, I have heard them and think their just as good as the other albums I'm more familiar with. One of my favorite bands.

My reactions to the first set of songs: Sonata Arctica –
Cold Melodic ”soft
metal” (since I am not so much into metal, I don’t know what the
correct subgenre would be if there is one). Fine song, but it’s not
so much my taste. I had to listen to it on Spotify because the
YouTube clip is blocked in my country. A-ha – Don’t Do
Me Any Favours I only really know
A-ha for Take On Me, so the sound of this one is surprising to
me. It's quite melancholic; a bit singer/songwriter-like
perhaps. Nice song. Kingdom Come – Mad
Queen Sounds rather
80’s-like to me, especially with the drum sound and the keyboards.
Listening to it halfway I think I expected an Eddie Van Halen type of
guitar solo, but the one that comes is more laid back. Still very
80’s sounding. Fine song again, but not something I would normally
listen to. Testament – The
Legacy Driven by
chorus-fueled guitar, this one is very much a product of it’s time:
the very early 90’s, just before grunge blew hair metal away (so
the story is written). There’s a sort of mix between the more
stripped down sound aesthetics of the 90’s on one side, and a very
80’s sound lead guitar on the other side. Quite an interesting
combination actually. Diary of Dreams -
Dream of a Ghost Now a complete
change of style - at least on a superficial level - towards synth
pop. The mood, on the other hand, is more like that of the previous
songs (melancholic and in minor). The vocals remind me of David Bowie
who must have been a source of inspiration somehow. Interesting
track. Iris – Ploaia de
Vis The song is from
1988, but it actually sounds a lot older, especially considering the
production: the drum sound in particular is more like late 70’s and
early 80’s. They keyboard riff is more mid-80’s to me though. A
bit punky. Very unpolished in any case. Personally I find it a bit
monotonus. What language are they singing in? Rosu si Negru – Cu
fiecare vis Guess this is from
the 80’s too. There was quite a lot of music in Denmark with a
similar sound from that period. Despite being a little boy in that
period, it never really became a sound I could identify with. The
massive quitar ”orchestration” towards the end reminds me of
Queen.
