Two iconic bands of the blues scene, featuring some of the greatest guitarists of all time (Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Mick Taylor, etc.)...
But which is the greatest?

Both were great but the Bluesbreakers were more hardcore on the blues than the Yardbirds.

Both are what i would call rightfully nominations for schools of rock. Bands that schooled what would become the staples of rock musicianship of the 60s and onto 70s rock. Other bands that also were "schools of rock" was Graham Bonds Organisation and Long John Baldrys Bluesology

A prog band that could be considered a school of rock: the Wilde Flowers. half of the Canterbury Scene bands were made up of ex-members.

Absolutely John Mayall! I really like also Yardbirds, but they never truly achieved blues feeling that John Mayall have had.

For the individual "hits" the Yardbirds, but for the overall albums The Bluesbreakers. Ergo, Mayall.

As Steve already said the Bluesbreakers were more 'hardcore' on the blues side-no question about it-, but I enjoy listening to those great Yardbird tracks (songs) that straddled blues, rock, and pop and were often ear candy...'hits' ,as Dark Elf implied. Unfortunately Mayall never really had a radio friendly track.
So I voted Yardbirds who imho were probably more influential to later bands trying to be rockers as the world of rock and roll solidified in the mid to late 60's. But I'm sure 'blues fans' will of course vote Mayall.....who certainly did help jump start the career of some of the players that ended up in later well known rock bands. All in all...a tough call to make. Edited by dr wu23 - July 30 2020 at 21:34 |

I can't remember who I voted for, and if I knew I'd almost certainly disagree with it. I reckoned it was a pretty impossible poll, but Mayall seems to be winning.
