Hello Lorenzo, sure!  I would like to do one with the focus on male singer/songwriters. Not on PA, preferably acoustic oriented, although electric embellishment is fine with me (as in bypass the one ballad every hair band was obliged to do in the 80's).  Lyrics should be included, in original language and English.  I think you'd said you liked the idea of singer/songwriters, I was thinking you might like to escort the ladies on that topic, if not, I'll bring my girlfriends along the next time I do one, or someone else might wish to?

The posting of lyrics presents a problem due to copyright/ intellectual property issues. See this topic: Copyrighted material - A warning

Quote We have recently been obliged to remove a popular and otherwise compliant thread due to it being riddled with the quoting of copyrighted material.

We were approached by one of the copyright owners who made it clear in unambiguous terms that legal action would be taken if the quotes were not removed immediately.

Members are reminded that they should not include copyrighted material in their forum posts or reviews without the express permission of the owner. This includes lyrics, essays, and all text appearing on other websites, in books, magazines etc. It is usually best to use links to other websites rather than reprint text from them.

I was going to post something about that and fair use/ fair dealing laws but deleted it for clarity and because I'm no expert. I would think that translations might well be okay if done by yourself (or google translate and not official, unless with permission), as well as excerpts depending on the context, but I wasn't involved in the warning nor have I been advised by lawyers on such things. I am fairly familiar when it comes to copyright and fair use/fair dealing laws because I used to create parodies (long ago), and because of my job as it involves lots of quoting of material (that gets covered by fair use/fair dealing laws when done/ sourced correctly because of the context), but that's not the same situation as when quoting at this site, so...

If not linking to the lyrics (one would have to be very careful with where one links to too, lots of "bad" one there are themselves no internationally lawful, and some that have presented internet safety concerns, official sources being best), we could perhaps paraphrase bits:

"The female is fond of thee, yes, yes, yes
The female is fond of thee, yes, yes, yes
The female is fond of thee, yes, yes, yes
Having a fondness of that ilk
Thee understands that thou should feel compelled to be pleased" (paraphrased from The Beatles' "She Loves You").

;)

Thanks, Logan.  Many times the YT will include lyrics if you open up "more," in the area where credits are listed.  If in another language, I would imagine that any of us could decide from there to translate and not jeopardize anything here.  Also, sometimes in the comments, there will be lyrics that someone has supplied.
Thinking about it, lyrics would of course make the postings extra long here, so no doing that will help with that potential problem.  Most singer-songwriters are fairly clear in their enunciation, anyway, though not always!

Hi all,

Sorry to intrude here, but reading about copyright issues I thought I might give my two cents (from my knowledge and experience in the audiovisual sector).

Translations do not replace the original copyright, but just add a new copyright: The copyright of the original text remains valid but the translation is also copyrighted (when you do a translation of a text and it is used by a third party, they formally owe both the original copyright holder and you for the translation). Copyright is, internationally, not regulated in the same way everywhere, but this is relatively standard.

Parodies are generally considered as original creations and do not (should not) be indebted to the original work.

"Fair use" is quite a different, complicated chapter and depends for the moment much on case law ("jurisprudence" in French...). If/when you go this road you better get legal advice.

And please, do not use Youtube as a reference of what is copyrighted (or free of use) or not. A lot of what is on YT is copyrighted, it is just that stakeholders take time to react or do not react at all.

As said, my two cents...
Best,
K

Once again setting the bar high, thanks to Lewian for his Surprise poll!  I will be posting the new poll either tomorrow or on Tuesday at the latest.  This one, as discussed, will be male singer/songwriters.  There's a wealth of them, so it will be interesting to hear what fans of prog also enjoy in another realm.  Smile

They would certainly be acceptable, I'm just nixing any hair band obligatory ballads, I want the entrants to come from the singer/songwriter genre, not rockers doing a one-off.  Smile

Well then Yeehah! I'll try to bring the big guns.

That's Cher straddling a very big gun on a battleship from her "If I Could Turn Back Time" video. I wish she could turn back time and not have done that video.

Seriously, I'm all for gun control and will leave the guns behind for the topic methinks. I can't promise that my singer/songwriter won't be very hairy, however.

As long as the cat is a tom, all well and good. Smile  Edited to add, that my great aunt (who loved Neil Diamond's singing technique) detested Robert Goulet, who she said "sounded like a yowling cat."  LOL  And she liked cats, but not Mr Goulet.

I am sorry not to have participated as much as I used to, but I have to admit to having been somewhat down on the forum in the past few days. Too many boring, repetitive topics, and too many belligerent peopleUnhappy.

Anyway, Nickie's idea sounds fantastic, and I am sure both Lorenzo and I will come up with some interesting Italian suggestions. The lyrics thing is inconvenient, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Being a linguist, I am not a fan of Google Translate, whose results are often hilarious, but we don't want to risk getting the site in trouble by posting unauthorized material.

I've been thinking about which song to pick since that topic was mentioned and it's hard to know if the songs are interesting without understanding the lyrics. I was also trying to translate some lyrics in English and had no idea how difficult it is to make them pleasant to read. The intricacies of Latin languages can make simple phrases sound much clever.
