I use "Were" specifically because things can change for a living director. Maybe they make one great movie and their country loves them forever. Name a dead director who IS popular in other countries, but not their own. Specify all you can.. The country/countries a particular director IS popular, maybe reasons why you think (or know) this?

I've heard Kurosawa say he was disliked in Japan. One reason I read was that he drew from Western influences (Shakespeare, for example) and wasn't Japanese "enough". I've heard the same being said about Bergman as well. My guess is that his movies might paint a dark picture of Sweden. I heard a director in this Bergman documentary say that Fellini wasn't liked in Italy, but I find it hard to believe. He mentioned that his last few movies didn't make any money as a possible reason, but that's usually standard anywhere.

Out of curiosity, since I learnt from your last topic that you post these across multiple forums (reddit, Steve Hoffman...), in which forum do you tend to get the best discussions out of these sorts of topics?

It might be useful for us to read the other forumites responses so we don't just end up repeating what they said when answering your query.

I'd be surprised if we had any discussion here that rivaled other sites..  really only a couple hardcore Movie types I know of here. You and the Norwegian guy who really know and talk about it... oh and the Baldies but they know everything about everything don't they God bless them. They are and long have been our forum's greatest weapon against intellectual mediocrity haha.

checked the links..  neck and neck it seems between those two with us here hanging out at the bar, pounding shots and mugs, and making off color comments and jokes as no site or its forumites can do...

I'm a one forum at a time kind of guy, and I wouldn't want to stretch myself thin by trying to have discussions across various boards (let alone doing the same topics/ posting the same things in several places), but Reddit is awesome for the breadth of topics and knowledge and analysis. I don't post there, but I do read there for research-purposes. I prefer communicating here because I enjoy various members of the community (including you, of course).

I do a couple of forums but others are more subject  specific for me and its business first... pleasure.. that is PA's and it not for he music. Music is like sex...  you don't talk about it man. You do it.. you experience it and trying to talk about it put those feelings into words.. Nah... pfff..it doesn't work

It is the people here I love.. and topics like this.. and others that are as Nuke pitches and f**ks..

all over the place man..  I love that about the forum almost as much the people here and don't right I include you in that.

I'm not going to talk about other sites on here, nor would I mention someone else' activities on other sites.

Follow your ethics. You mentioned having brought something up in your last topic in another forum, and I was interested to see what others said (and how the conversations with you compared to here). It's all public and a quick google search yielded multiple results.. I link to other sites quite often (not spam). I'm someone who likes to see consolidation of data, and would be pleased to see others linking to my musings on other sites (as long as they are not bad mouthing me). To each his or her own. It's a neat strategy, coming up with the same topic and posting it at multiple forums, and if it works for your purposes, then whatever. I'm not judging you.

I'm sure they talk about some of us, and PA generally, more than others, like [names withheld] who is a total legend at several adult sites (which cannot be named here) for his past hardcore, fast, furious and heavy artist suggesting action. ;) I've looked quite hard to find people bad mouthing me at other sites, and been disappointed not to find results (well, very little). It would have made me realise how totally insignificant I am if I didn't already know. That said, I suspect that it's because I don't spend time searching the darkest, deepest and most depraved parts of the dark web. There altars are built to us while rituals of writhing and wriggling are performed in our names.

*spits beer on monitor*

I suppose there could be good legends.. and bad legends when talking about one's status on adult sites. I don't even want to know which one he fell into LOL

ohhh.. wait a second

ummm Greg.. I think we did get a bit off topic here and don't think Mort is digging it...it's expected of me but you escaped me and my evil forum ways long ago.. .. tossed your AR black hat and got yourself a MOD white one and became respectable.

I shouldn't be corrupting you again and gleefully crashing trains in this guys thread..  sorry Mort. Blame me.. I always brought out the worst in good people here.

^ I have always been a black hat on the inside. Did you ever see Westworld season one?

And for a living one, Ruggero Deodato who made Cannibal Holocaust. Kenneth Anger is disliked by a lot of people in the US, but he's still alive.

As for Kurosawa, I worked in Japan and talked about Kurosawa with quite a few Japanese (also knew quite a few people born in Japan here in Vancouver, which is why I got offered jobs teaching in Japan). They seemed to generally respect him, but a couple of those I spoke with didn't like my favourite of his which was "Dô desu ka den" because of its depiction of poverty in the Tokyo slums.

No worries..

It would have been better to send me a PM. No big deal, but every site has their rules, but in general I find good responses on a prog-rock when it comes to talking about movies, because fans probably watch a lot of non-mainstream stuff.

Popularity is a complicated thing. Like, popular among whom. I know more than several people from the famous world-wide known choir called Oreya... They have won in almost any competition where they participated since long ago. Then, they are world-wide known in the world of choir singing. And that changes everything, actually.

Similarly, as I once wrote, there were three main Soviet comedy makers-directors. There was Leonid Gaidai for the massive watcher and then Ryazanov and Daneliya. The most popular Soviet comedies in terms of income, watchers, citations were made by Gaidai. Personally I prefer the comedies by other directors, Gaidai was very mainstream, straightforward, slapstick and that sort.
