At the time in the late 70s I used to like a lot of singles by KC and the Sunshine Band, Earth Wind & Fire and Kool and the Gang. One thing I do remember disliking was what Steve Hackett called the "Pea soup" hi-hat sound that seemed
to be on every disco record. These days I still listen to a fair bit of it and like every genre there's good and bad. Here are a couple of my
favourites with added visuals from Top of the Pops dance troupe Legs
& Co. |

That brings back fond memories, seeing Noel Edmonds presenting Top of the Pops, long before his seemingly endless and mind-numbingly boring Deal or No Deal game show.
![]() I've always liked Giorgio Moroder, and who can forget this Moroder-produced Disco classic, from the Disco Diva herself..... DONNA SUMMER - I Feel Love |

Boogie Nights would have made a good alternative title for this thread.

I love the Yvonne Elliman track. She also does some excellent
vocals on Jon Lord's Gemini Suite. This is another personal favourite
from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack:

Purely by coincidence, I was listening to Yvonne Elliman on Jon Lord's Gemini Suite album earlier on today.

Disco, yea as a teen that stuff hit hard in the mid late 70's. A lot of disco ended up being R&B with a lot of hi-hat and 4 on the floor beat, throw in the rhythm guitar (a la Nile Rodgers) strumming and you can dance to it.
I'm a huge EW&F fan, but I only consider Boogie Wonderland and Let's Groove to be "disco", those two were constant rotation at dance clubs and HS dances. Then you had funk/R&B bands that wanted a pc of that disco pie like The Bar-Kays with Move Your Boogie Body, the rest of the album In-Joy is R&B/Soul..... This is all great music these bands recorded, very talented musicians back in the day.

A lot of these songs are what were the norm at disco clubs, because they were longer....As well the dance mix 12" single or extended versions. This is where my interest in prog came from, I have said it before the longer R&B songs got me looking into prog. The 3-4 min songs were played but a 8-12 min disco remix/extended version is what dancers wanted, and the DJs. Heatwave's great song The Groove Line was a 4:15 song, the extended dance mix is about 8min long.... Heatwave a massively talented band, cut down short by some tragedy....Rod Temperton was a genius who made Michael Jackson a gazillionaire with songs he wrote for albums Off The Wall and Thriller including the title track. |

More More More, a prime slice of decadent 70s disco sung by porn
actress Andrea True. The piano section around the 2:20 mark was sampled
by Len for their 1999 hit Steal My Sunshine: I like a lot of the KC and the Sunshine band hits, but this is a particular favourite: Edited by Cactus Choir - July 17 2020 at 15:07 |
