Vezhlivy Otkaz have been booked for a NY State Russian-American festival next June, think I'll go!

JETLAG-2019: ВЕЖЛИВЫЙ ОТКАЗ ("Polite Refusal")

We are proud and excited to make our first JetLAG-2019 announcement. Welcome the pioneers of Russian experimental art rock, with their inimitably sophisticated, often almost academic but also most erratic and groovy style, unique signature sound and edgy avant-guard lyrics. Back to US after almost 20-year break, now as a trio. Dmitry Shumilov - bass, vocal, Roman Suslov - guitar, vocal, Mikhail Mitin - drums. Yes, it is they! VEZHLIVY OTKAZ!

YOU-TOP-EE-YEAH! UTOPIA!
WELCOME TO JETLAG-2019!

The truth is other than the odd band here or there, I haven't listened to much RIO/Avant in the past couple of years. But the recent slew of polls has reminded me how many bands in the genre I love ... what's surprised me though is how much I already know everything in the polls. I had thought maybe I was getting out of touch with the genre but maybe there isn't much of it being made lately?

I've heard a few in the past few years ... Saal Hardali, Merkabah, and Theo Ceccaldi and Freaks being obvious highlights (all in the jazzy side of things) ... oh, and Schneller... what else has been going on in the genre?

Saw Vezhlivy Otkaz last night in Drom, a small jazz club in New York City. They were everything I'd want from a gig, tight, fun, edgy and rocking. I had loads of fun and loved every minute. One of my bucket list bands I never thought I'd see ticked off.

Took the 2.30am train from NYC to Boston to get home, rolled in at 8am and I went straight into work, I'm beat!

good to see this thread get some pop again

and nice. I'm not really a fan, but happy for you that you got to see a band that you never thought you would. I experienced that with VDGG...it's a great feeling.

I love Henry Cow's "Amygdala" so much that I recreated it in its entirety by ear using only basic sine, saw and square waves in FL Studio

Wow! that would be great. I feel like there has been a rumor for their next (second?) album for like 4 years now.

That sounds interesting! Looks two of the great RIO/Avant-Prog bands: Present and Aksak Maboul are releasing new albums in 2020. I'm excited.

Impending album Éons by Neptunian Maximalism on pretty-far-out Italian metal label I, Voidhanger:

Blurb:

Belgium's NEPTUNIAN MAXIMALISM (aka NNMM) is a community of “cultural engineers” with a variable line-up, mixing drone metal with spiritual free jazz and psychedelic music. The project was initiated in 2018 by multi-instrumentalist Guillaume Cazalet (Czlt, Jenny Torse, Aksu, Ôros Kaù), who brought together veteran saxophonist Jean Jacques Duerinckx (Ze Zorgs) and two drummers, Sebastien Schmit (K-Branding) and Pierre Arese (Aksu). In 2020, Stephane FDL and Lukas Bouchenot took the drums. Reshma Goolamy (bass), Romain Martini (guitar), Alice Thiel (synths, guitar), Joaquin Bermudez (saz, setar), Didié Nietzche (soundscapes) and Leslie V. (black magic scenography) joined in 2019, thus changing the band into a real drone orchestra [...etc, etc]rchestra.

HELLO PANHEAD

This is out now and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Absolutely awesome and epic. Spiritual jazz meets drone metal in a zone of heavily spaced-out raga rock and blackened psychedelia. Pupmeister, this has got your name written all over it!

Also, it's a concept album about how after the end of the anthropocene era mankind will be replaced as Earth's hegemonic species by a gargantuan race of intelligent elephants. And it's from Belgium. Really, what the f**k more do you want?

Listening to it for the first time right now, and it sounds awesome. Great mix of psychedelic stoner metal with all kinds of influences, it's all over the place. I gotta split it to 2 though since it's over 2 hours.
