Shadowyzard (concentrating on those who posted several things and commented already now): Well here we go again... I guess your love for these is strongly connected to the film? The march part in the Batman Theme works very well, even though the whole thing is very typical soundtrack music in my ears it stirs things up nicely. Similar Conan... I like how well the things you chose go with your avatar though. Tan Dun I like most, very good sound and instrumentation, but as "autonomous music" I miss some development, it seems to go nowhere. Of course they all were composed and chosen as soundtracks, which is fair enough... just based on my criteria they won't make the podium. Zelenhgorm: Interesting, from listening this could easily have been a movie soundtrack, and a good one at that. Surprised that this is from a game (I haven't done video games for ages except football/soccer ones, I've got to admit). Obviously as now I have gone on for long enough about my criteria, you will already know that ultimately this wouldn't have had chances with me either, but there are a few parts (the beginning and what starts 2:20) that I could enjoy well on their own. jamesbaldwin: Double Life of Veronique is a favourite film of mine, which makes it hard to "subtract the film" when listening. However, it is a dramatic and well structured piece that clearly has a life on its own. A contender. The Ballad of Sacco and Vanzetti: The versatility of Morricone is just amazing. I had already almost decided not to vote for him, but I wasn't aware of this, and this is a fascinating song with a fancy arrangement that I could well enjoy a lot on its own. Well, I write I wasn't aware of this, but I'm pretty sure I saw the film or most of it on TV accidentally long ago. I didn't pay enough "autonomous" attention to the soundtrack... I tend to have an integrated perception of films not separating out the music. (My favourite soundtrack music and all my nominations except Rota I discovered as music only.) Taking various comments on board, including yours, since I allowed it to be open to change and new suggestions until I put the poll up, which would be later this morning (2:00 am now) if it goes as planned, Morricone is represented and I already got to pay some sort of personal tribute to him, I am going with The Wicker Man' "Willow's Song" option. Oh, and I like diversity/ eclecticism -- I feel that including Willow's Song will create a more diverse sound in the poll listing. If others wish to add or make changes, or if any others haven't confirmed the choice, it's still open for at least another 3 and a half hours (had planned to put the poll options up early morning). Okay, I have to get down to adding them very shortly, as I will be busy today. In a couple of cases I'm not sure that that was the final selection (hope there's no disappointment, surprises, or errors), but I had planned to put this up early morning on Thursday, and I will stick with that schedule.

Interesting that you went with what doesn't come across as a soundtrack per se, in your contemplations. I didn't think of that as a potential for eliminating a piece in this round. In this way, you were absolutely correct that "Women of Ireland," wasn't composed for film originally, but was adapted for this particular film. Your ear certainly caught the distinction.

Sorry I was off on an adventure yesterday and didn't have time to put up my final decision. It's been a tough one to decide for me, but I finally decided to go with the one that had the most impact on my own life this time around.
 Annie Lennox - "Love Theme for a Vampire" from "Interview with a Vampire". Thanks for all of the feedback from everyone. After Shadowyzard's comments, and realizing that what he said about the quality of the sound on the original post I made about that song, I am going to post a better recording of it. I wasn't sure about the original post that it would become my final choice, but I wanted to post that video because of the tie-in with the movie. So below is a video with a better audio quality: |

That was a rather stupid remark of mine. In German the Juliet in Romeo and Juliet is Julia, too.
It's not a formal elimination criterion. Rather, when I'm listening to music, I care for the music and nothing else, and when I think, this one sounds like written for going with a film, it distracts from the music. And when I'm watching films, I don't normally care for the soundtrack as music, but rather I perceive the film and the music as a unit. For which reason I chose and will vote on my music experience only here, not on whether something is good as soundtrack.

I love that song also, but once I finally posted the Annie Lennox song (which I wasn't going to post originally because of the importance of that song during a time in my life where everything in my life was turned around) I couldn't not put it up as my option for voting. How can I hate anybody using a nickname and avatar about cats? You should try REALLY hard for that. Some scratches won't make me hate you. The Annie Lennox song you put sounded way more pleasuresome, listening with a better audio quality.

I agree that visuals can be very distracting to music. I usually try to listen without being on the actual video (have that playing on another tab) and prefer those that don't have a video, unlike many people. I also often find that I'm not watching a film, but actually just listening to the soundtrack. I do enjoy beautiful (to my eye, anyway) cinematography and art etc, however and do have some films that I just love. |

Here are my contenders, going to listen through a couple more times before determining my final three.
Contenders: Logan: The Wicker Man, Paul Giovanni & Magnet “Willow’s Song” Loved that, wispy vocals, kind of melancholy, pretty instrumentally, want to hear again. Gentle & Giant: 28 Days, John Murphy “In The House, In A Heartbeat” Starts off nice and eerie and builds and builds, then drops back again. I enjoy this kind of a piece. Meltdowner: Our Town, Aaron Copland “Our Town Suite” Lovely serene music, the main melody is so sweet truly gives the feeling of a small town, in contemplation of it’s normal life. I can hear this becoming an earworm, already still hearing it in my mind’s ear. Lorenzo: The Double Life of Veronica, Zbigniew Preisner “Van den Budenmayer” Very haunting, angelic choral voices. Will have to see if the melody comes back to haunt me. George: Gone Girl, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross "Technically, Missing" Carried Trent and NIN on several tours, so got to see them live. That said, this is very different and more my style. A slower, more insidious feel than the NIN music, at least to me, maybe because of no vocals telling me where to place my mind? I dunno. I like this kind of build/wash of sound thing that sometimes drops and turns into something else. Very atmospheric. dr wu: Vertigo, Bernard Hermann “Vertigo Theme” Love Hitchcock films and his television series here in the 50’s and 60’s (mostly as reruns for me). As usual, this piece works perfectly with the film, sinister and a bit understated, leaving something to the imagination. A contender for sure. Have to say how we always tuned in to watch “The Birds,” knowing Bodega Bay so well and loving Daphne du Maurier’s writing. Edited by Snicolette - July 09 2020 at 19:15 |

I will most probably be back for the next poll (I decided to sit out of this, partly for time reasons, but also because I am usually not so fond of listening to film music when separated from the picture). But I wouldn't mind if the time interval between polls was a little longer. Sometimes I have hardly managed to listen to all songs in one poll, and then the next one is already going.
