exactly.. it is the media attention these 'stars' get.. unfortunately.. the media attention makes it hard to ignore them.. so instead of taking them seriously. many (like me) take entertainment value of them and just mock them. It isn't just a right wing sport you know haha
No more than being a reality TV star and used car salesman snake oil dealer and all around corrupt shiester made Trump smart and knowledgeable about politics or the world around us.. writing songs or staring in movies doesn't either.

Yeah, who know what disastrous effects would end up arising from the writer's strike in Hollywood? 2007, I think? "Reality" shows.

giving us Trump???
yeah the anti-intellectual.. idiotization of America didn't start with Trump and Trump voter.. it was the Writer's Strike....
leading to reality TV.. leading to.. idiot Trump voter... leading to... the Idiot in Chief.. leading to 2020 (only half way done btw)
oh I need to do a writeup on that and submit that to Politico for one of their cool political history pieces they have.
The death and rebirth of America... the Hollywood Writer's Strike.. yeah.. clickbait city there

I would love to read what you write about that, I've long held this observation. Thank you for considering it's unintended consequences.

yeah.. my reply started off as a joke... but then the unintended consequences kept adding up.. and finally leading to what is most certainly... not a joke
all kinds of politico types rightfully talk of the anti-intellectual basis of today's Republican Party.. one of many reasons we are in the trouble we are in now.. a bunch of f**king idiots running around and ignoring.. not listening to experts ..
none have really written.. or perhaps considered just where this mass stupidity really came from. Again. .Trump is but a symptom of it.. those that voted for him.. again... just a symptom.

quick edit and expansion of what I was riffing on earlier

I think the Bernie-Warrencrats will eventually win that battle in the Democratic Party. |
missed this earlier
not just realistic.. it is happening in front of our own eyes. A historic political realignment going on in this country.
Trump has only accelerated the shift of women, the suburbs and the educated away from the Republican Party that had been going on since 2008. and as a parting gift.. set back any real attempts to expand Republican appeal to hispanics back a decade or more
what does that mean... the Calfifornianization ..on the national level of the Republican Party. Every election cycle.. for the last decade...their path to 270 gets slimmer and slimmer.
Unles the party changes.. and it isn't and hasn't.. because it CANT NOT. It will be locked completely out of power at the national level. No chance to get the White House back.. none for tthe HOuse.. and if trends conitue.. little chance in the Senate
that my friend.. as you correctly note.. is absolutely fatal in a two party system. That is why in the next decade.. I have said with reason.. 2032.. The Republican Party dies... 2032. Hispanics are a majority of the under 30 pop in this country. Texas will be as gone to them as California is... and with a redistricting.. losing all those Electoral votes. both Senate seats and a large shuffling of House seats. They become at best a 3rd party.. but we would need a healthy nationally viable 2nd party IN OUR TWO PARTY SYSTEM. Not a regional rump party that the Republicans are .. well... about 4 months from becoming. That is where the coming split of the Democratic Party plays in.. I think both happen at the same time.. ie .. one ..leads the other. |
as a side note to a) the on life support status of the Republican Party.. had this discussion many a time over the years here. You might have missed it since you haven't been around
'yes.. but the Republican Party will change before it gets to that point'
well.. it may already be at that point.. Texas moving blue is happening even quicker than I thought. I thought it was at least 4 years away. It is a dead even toss up now.. lose it.. they are toast
and you are pretty aware of what is going on... and what happened in 2016. The Republicans know exactly what I am saying .. so what did they try to do.. put a moderate face.. but that did not happen. The fatal problem that party has it it's core.. its core are fundies, racists, bigots and nativits and they.. not the Republian Party establishment seleted Trump
and when Trump loses... who will still be around in 2024.... and selecting the next candidate. Yep.. the fundies bigots, racists and white grievance voters
note.. i'm sure you've also read of Trump supporter House candiates getting voted out.. by those Q freaks from the very far right.
They know they have to change.. but they can't .. short of committing career suicide for every single swinging swamp creature in DC. They'd have to disown the very people that voted them into office and would have to.. not moderate the party.. but in pure hard terms.. move it left. That is why they haven't in 10 odd years and why they simply won't... they can't. It would take a figure of extreme principal and forethought to do it..
and that hahha.. is pretty much an extinct attribute to anyone.. anyone in the Republican Party. They are the very swamp creatures Trump railed at.. sucking on the system and getting what they can get while they can..
and if the party dies off for it down the road in some murky future.. oh well.. worse case for them...they'll be sitting pretty on K Street by then ..

Well, if you think about it, so many of his "base," are just that. They didn't read, except maybe the National Enquirer and Gun and Garden. Anti-intellectualism. But most people (especially back then) watched television (and still do, but not in the same concentrated way). There were some who were in awe of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," type shows, but no one took those very seriously, they were just voyeurism and there wasn't much of it about. But then, the writers of creative and original series were sucked under by trying to get a little more for their efforts. And it backfired terribly. This is not to say that there haven't been any shows at all that aren't, since, especially thinking of shows like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and even on broadcast tv, Lost, perhaps, but it's all been split up so much as the format changed. And suddenly people actually tuned into things on broadcast television during prime time like The Bachelor, and The Apprentice. "Music" shows like American Idol. Not a lot of writing had to be done for these and certainly not a lot of intellectual content, or innovation. It was and has been pretty much easy-to-digest pap. Like Harlan Ellison predicted, The Glass Teat, long before this, and Ray Bradbury before him (although he became a bit more right-wing than I would have thought, before he died)....nonetheless, Fahrenheit 451 Where there were the large interactive tv screens in people's homes. This is not to discount shows like The Handmaid's Tale, or what has still been airing on PBS in terms of historical fiction and others that I've been missing for the upheavals of late in my own life. Yet, I think it does go back to what happened then and how it assisted in creating our current situation, along with the rise of Fox News-types and the dumbing down of our public educational system.

I'm sick and tired of people saying that the Bernie-Warren wing of the Democratic Party are a bunch of commies. What they're advocating is not radical at all. In fact, ALL of their policies are quite mainstream in most other Western countries. Instead what's quite radical are the policies of the Republican Party. They make the French Front National Party seem moderate at times.

I think a lot of us are getting tired of the "commie" term. It sounds so out of touch these days, they don't even know what communism is, and reflects more poorly on the name-callers in my opinion. The Bernie-Warren wing is more like a 2.0 version of the New Deal Democrats to me. I agree completely that their policies are mainstream in most Western democracies.
I didn't know the Republicans had any policies. I thought they took their orders from Putin.

^ see above discussion Friede... most here have little clue what socialism is. Yet makes for a great political smear and scare soundbite... especially 'liberal' has sort of lots its bite... and commie is like 30 years gone man.

excellent post... and as much as we love (and it deserves it) to throw feces at Faux.. it is just the most blatant offender of much of what passes for news reporting today. Long gone are the days when news is merely reported.. now it is processed. Packaged for consumption for a specific audience or obviously to advance specific goals by the big wigs/owners. FAUX by far is the worst offender.. did they really edit Trump out of that Epstein photo.. and then claim it was a 'mistake' yeah sure it was .
However you see it with all the big major news outlets. It is why many .. including myself do not get our information from them but from more professional sites that give you the hard facts first and foremost. It being up to you to figure out what to make of it. The majors process the news to fit their audience.. to save you the time and trouble of thinking and good God almighty does it work.. and nothing hurts network ratings more than telling an audience what they don't want to hear. They'll just go somewhere else
Remember.. Trump never expected to win..more importantly he did everything one should not do in that campaign to win for a reason... he never intended to win. He wasn't running to be President. Typical for him and his ego and narcissism.. it was all a big PR stunt in preparation for launching his own right wing news site.. and using the call of voter fraud and hatred of HRC and the anger it would generate in conjunction with paying Faux back for being opposed to him. Karma is indeed a boomeranging bitch.. catastrophic success indeed.

Yeah, I did go on a bit. Ultimately, another case of unexpected consequences. When you do something for another reason entirely and end up 45.

no doubt... and I could imagine.. and if I guess correctly about you .. it does... that it really disappointing.. if not frustrating.. to see who casually people here take for granted their rights.
or worse.. as I've posted many a time... forgetting that with those rights. Come responsibilities.
I will be curious to see if and how things might change here in the post Covid-19 America. Well actually I think the if is wasted question.. if is going to.. but how far does it really go. I think it will have a large political affect..and it seems (perhaps in conjunction with that) a reappraisal of how our health care system works.. and doessn't work. The rugged frontier individualist..fear of government... Darwin mentality that pervades much of this countries culture. IT is deep rooted but the virus may be a point on which we start looking more towards a social democracy. A greater good rather than worshiping and greasing the wheel for the elites.
we shall see...

This might well be wishful thinking. I fear that Trump is going to win for one simple reason:
History has shown universally (and if there are exceptions, please let me know) that in hard times the masses want the strong man, and this Joe Biden just ain't, while Trump cultivates the strong-willed iron man image on a daily basis. This practically always works. The times in the USA don't come much harder than this, considering that the only positive seems to be the stock market, at the moment at least. And the multitude of catastrophes show no signs of abating before voting day.
There is either something seriously wrong with polls, or most people (and I find this more likely) are showing support outwardly for Biden, but on polling days they are going to vote the unthinkable and do what they've always done, probably hiding their guilty secret from others including polls. Also a classic.
Why should this election be the exception compared to centuries of history? History has also shown in many cases that it doesn't matter that the strong man has a major role to play in the creation of crises, if spun correctly.

I don't see this election turning out well. If Trump wins or loses, there could be an excessive reaction to it. When I mean excessive, I mean protests, violence, rioting, clashes, etc.
