Good call on Type O Negative! What an amazing band!

I can add one of my favorite 20 minute epics, Everything Under The Sun by Extreme.

It's 20 minutes long but usually considered psych and not prog(not even really proto prog imo).

"In my Time of Dying" and "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida" are in my opinion full fledged prog songs.

Prob proto prog/early psych prog?

That was the most epic song I knew before finding Prog Tongue

I probably mentioned it a lot on another thread but this 24 minute suite is somewhere between Dream Pop and 70's Prog.

Hi,

IF we stop looking at these things as just "songs", then history shows us something else ... that some of these things were more important and valuable than we give them credit for ... and this was the case with THE DOORS.

Nowadays it's all "songs" and everything is "the same" because the folks listening do not see, or care to even understand, how valuable and important some of these things were ... I mean, Miles, these days, is FINALLY getting some of the appreciation he deserved that he was not getting then!

The problem is, that a lot of these things are NOT ... just "songs" ... but we have to bring it down to the valueless (and clue-less) area of "songs" where everything has to be the same ... and a lot of these things ARE NOT THE SAME, and never were intended to be! In many cases, the idea was TO BE DIFFERENT ... but in a "song" like format/idea, this can not happen and it is not, in the minds of many folks!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

kinda are, because they experimented sometimes, especially in the 90s, went beyond the verse chorus verse, rely on atmosphere.

An interesting 'pop/rock' band who manged to transcend musical genres. Prog or not..?
Did they influence Queen with that one...?   ;)

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet - Telegraph Road is quite a progressive song, at about 14 minutes. Correct me if it's been mentioned already.
Tunnel of Love is quite progressive too.

21 minutes long, divided up into multiple sections and quite daring for its time, but it certainly can't be called "progressive rock" by any stretch of the term Tongue

Not sure whether I agree with you being "tacked on". To me it's the perfect finish to the song.

I think the coda is actually longer than the first part of the song, makes one wonder if the searing riffs and vocals at the beginning weren't the part that got "tacked on." lol

Ha, ha. I think you're right. Someone thought it was a good idea to get the piano out and used the excuse of the guitar riffs and vocals to do it.

10cc did a couple of epic 10 minute plus songs. Une Nuit a Paris has already been mentioned but this is my favourite, ending with a suitably heroic guitar solo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HcxhcSlTc4
"And now...on the drums...Mick Underwooooooooood!!!"

"He's up the pub"
