Yes, Cristi, after the next mathman's poll, the poll about catchy songs is welcome. The spirit that animates the Interactive Polls is that everyone can participate and propose himself as coordinator of a new poll, deciding, if he wants, a theme (the theme is optional) as long as it is vast. So VIVA catchy songs poll! |

My dear, thanks a lot for you words. You have deeply understood the intentions that led me to open the Interactive poll: to propose some songs that belong to our life story because they touched our heart, and see what effect they have on other forumists. Btw, my name's Lorenzo, I write from Milano, Italy. The nickname James Baldwin is in homage to one of my favorite writers. |

Pleased to meet you, Lorenzo, cheers! I mostly go by Nickie, much shorter than my forum name, which is just kind of a pun.

My real name (as most know already) is Mike, but it has also been a pun for most people. As for myself, I don't get it.

Mike (1908-1929) was the name of the legendary Top Cat who guarded the gates of the British Museum. I assumed that's why you'd chosen the username "TCat"

Hmmm....Well the username isn't quite that legendary. It actually comes from Primus' "Tommy the Cat". But, I'll allow any interpretation as long as it sounds good. P.S. The cat in my profile pic has been my cat now since 2005. His real name is MaCavity (taken from "Cats" of course, just stylized a bit differently). Since he doesn't have fingers, he just tells me what to say and I type it in.

If we're doing introductions, first name is George, some of my friends call me Geo for short. I am a mathman because I write and edit educational math products for print and digital, from Grade 3 math up through calculus. I think Lewian said he is a mathematician? I was a PhD student some 30 years ago but dropped out for personal reasons and fell into the field of educational publishing. With what I do, I work from home and have music (or NPR) on in the background all day long.

lot of mathematicians here.. dropped out myself twice.. the first was to serve my country as my father did and to be the first on my block to have a confirmed kill.. then later when I went back to college I dropped out a semester short of my double in history and math.. mainly because I had no desire to be behind a desk and decided to do what I wanted.. not was expected of me and I wanted to be a blue collar grunt.
cost me a wife and marriage.. thorough it took 10 years for it to finally decompose.. but in a life of poor decisions.. it was the best I ever made. I was happy.. and loved what I did. Fixing things... Blowing things up.. myself a few times.. burning sh*t down .. but never my own.. and meeting a lot of great people from very different backgrounds and upbringings than I had. I learned about myself in the miltary.. I learned a lot about life from others.

I have a math background, too, and still do the occasional proof. By the way, I have a nice idea for a theme, so when an open slot comes up, I can jump in (but I can wait). It's a surprise theme, can't say anything more than that.

On the other hand, I can barely perform the four basic operations. One of my greatest regrets is not having learned more "real" math, but I suppose it's too late for that now. Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I also have an idea for a topic, which will have to wait a few weeks. No hurry!

OK, so next week Greg (aka Logan) is doing soundtracks. Whenever it's possible, I'd like to do one on covers. As I said in my previous post, no hurry!

and let me pipe in.. before those that have already one polls do another.. we should check with the regulars and ask if they want to do one. People.. even here.. can be a bit shy in speaking up at times. We don't want to trample them in our enthusiasm haha

any idea is welcome obviously it's also not a matter of shyness, it's wanting to come up with an idea and when approved, coordinate the whole thing.

shyness, lack of an idea, or being trampled by the overly enthusiastic .. whatever the point is the same. The point being.. I'd like to make sure those that haven't done one get a chance to do so before those that have do them again.

I think we talk a bit too much about future topics. I don't feel good about Logan saying he wanted to do soundtracks and the exchange because micky suddenly said soundtracks, too. I also think if somebody has a theme others shouldn't comment on that too much and make the one with the idea feel that they should do it a certain way. I'd prefer to have spots reserved for people, and then they can do whatever they want. It's Logan's turn and if he wants to do soundtracks he should, and if somebody else has the same idea later, tough luck. I'm not going to tell you about my theme(s) in advance because I like surprises, and particularly I don't want these themes to be part of a general discussion and somebody wants to add this or that to the idea ... again, if somebody else decides to to the same thing before me, I've got to come up with a new idea, so be it.

The suspense is going to kill me. Make sure everyone wants a surprise theme. Other than that, I'm looking forward to it.
