Have heard everything once now. As I was away for two days, I didn't have time yet for the out of competition stuff, but will listen to that, too. At the moment only one thing is clear. No way am I not voting for Inti-Illimani. Actually I know this band pre-split 2004 pretty well and I like them a lot. I have hardly heard anything of Inti-Illimani Historico and Nuevo though, but this one is excellent, actually I was really excited listening to it, and easily up with their best pre-2004. I definitely need to check out more of Inti Nuevo.

Nicky and Lorenzo hit the mark . Zie de Mannen Vallen (See the Men Falling) was a mix of music, absurdist theatre and images. It was on Dutch TV in 1979. The album was the soundtrack of this performance: 6 songs in Dutch, 1 in German and 4 instrumentals. Edited by someone_else - June 29 2020 at 04:23 |

This is why these polls have been so interesting to me, widening my horizons, the exposure to what is outside of my "normal," listening habits. It's why, at least to me, "winning," is not important. I take notice of what each person brings and think about it. Makes me consider other viewpoints, I don't just "change the station." |

As a heads up, I'll start up the next non-prog poll tomorrow night U.S Eastern time and run the nomination period through Friday with voting to start over the weekend. We'll try out Mickey's suggestion from earlier in this thread for keeping nominations loose until Friday.

You're right. I updated my review on page 6. Had said that couldn't find the latin commission but in part was the way you posted the whole album first (the first track btw doesn't do much for me ...on a skim); on the other hand for some reason I keep forgetting the tango -> latin association (or to put it another way.. is not the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear 'latin') but that's my fault, and that is when I can recognize it properly. Yeah the tango very beautiful and challenging. I like that stuff.. the song that comes before (at least the ending) also to my liking. Definitely an album I'll be returning to. It reminds me of some other thing that I met here on PA.. could it be Holger Czukay? (not very fluent in all that stuff, but sure they interest me). Edited by Machinemessiah - June 29 2020 at 09:58 |

My semis resolved so: 1. Inti Illimani - Undisputed; liked very much the song you chose, "A la Caza del Ńandú".. beautiful title, very evocative, and I think the song reflects somehow the tension preceding the hunting. I know them perfectly well, if I'm not a follower nor knew the song. 2. Guccinni - Scirocco won the "tango battle" against Hauser Orkater and Kronos Quartet & Piazzolla; the beautiful italian singing twist a very welcomed novelty to me, and the song flows uninterrupted and dramatically from the nice raw bass at the beginning and those awesome ethereal bandoneons till that short and superb intermezzo/plateau (I'd like it if it were longer.. and a bit crazier.. but then, it would be on PA and not on this poll) from where it then resumes. 3. Working Week - Venceremos won the jazz/bossa nova/brazilian semi final. Very appealing and easygoing.. Love the smooth blend. The female voice is so the right tone/volume; and when with the backing vocals beautiful too.. when she sings in Spanish the pronounciation is perfect (not sure if it is the same singer.. I'd think it is); love the album cover also! Researched them minimally.. 1985.. isn't that the right date to be from ? Honored mentions: You know what, I'm using Logan's way instead: many. I think Meta Meta, Hauser Orkater and Exuma (and not sure if Klinke) could have form another semi final, the 'PA' one.. really good and challenging songs! Did updates on my review on page 6 on:
(Sorry guys if my first impressions were somewhat harsh and/or plainly wrong! and thanks for all the great songs!). Edited by Machinemessiah - June 29 2020 at 21:35 |

It doesn't have to be from Latin America according to the opening post which explains the expectations for this round. Various choices are not from Latin America.

I am late in voting on this, as people are already voting in the following round. The overlap, and that I tried to list my impressions of each song and instrumentals before, is making me feel a little burnt out on the series. I still want to do one myself later on, on soundtracks, when my turn comes up and I am available (I am going on a trip this summer despite world events, but staying in BC (British Columbia) this Anno Domini-- BC/AD, haha).
I did listen a second time to the selections, and I enjoyed some more than I did the first time. At the time I was very into specific music avenues. I won't bother trying to describe the music in this post, I didn't' do a good job of that before where I tried to say a little something about each piece in competition. That's not something I'm terribly good at at the best of times, and too often I later disagree with myself as I didn't pay close enough attention and feel my associations were lacking or just plain poor. I am not judging the music on how well I think it fits this topic's pretty broad parameters, which shows diversity in style as well as diversity in location, but instead I'm just considering the impact the recent discoveries made on me. Again, I will mention that I love Exuma, but as I knew it so very well and for a decade, I am going the route that some others have taken of eliminating it from the competition. I do like it very much. In the alternative choices, as said, I really love that Dr John piece -- my favourite by him and it is one that just wowed from first listen years ago. Had that been in competition, I don't think I could have resisted not going the "I didn't know it already very well route. So, based on freshness and my enjoyment today, I am voting for: - Meta Meta - Logun: That I knew would get my vote as soon as I heard it, I loved it. I might say that Logun's Run with it, which feels rather meta-meta for this Logan. Or not, whatever.... - Kronos Quartet & APiazzolla - Five Tango Sensations: Anxiety: Also loved, and while I already loved much Kronos Quartet music, I didn't know that. A little anxiety is not necessarily a bad thing, even for someone like me with some anxiety issues. - Hauser Orkater - Dichtgevroren Vijver: Orkater is in the Haus! It won't be the first time I've gone Dutch, but mostly that has been when with friends when paying the bill at restaurants. That's better than Dichting the bill altogether. Honourable mentions: many. It will probably be some time before I get down to checking out the music in the catchy prog poll despite having nominated one myself. In fact, I think I'd rather listen to and comment on the alternative choices in this topic before listening to and commenting on the following topic's choices (probably won't comment on them though unless discussion is still vibrant in this poll). I actually did listen to some of those alternative ones already. Edited by Logan - June 29 2020 at 15:31 |

OUT OF COMPETITION. Of course, I know that I shouldn't rank the songs out of competition, but ... I do it anyway 1) LEWIAN: Contrabajismo by Astor Piazzolla. This is an absolute masterpiece of contemporary music. I love the entire album, that I know very well. We are at the highest level of quality. Then, light years away from Piazzolla, there are: 2) LOGAN Jupiter Maca: Little Raver. Very hybrid music, this sounds like a Barzilian Simon & Garfunkel's song, with a very strange bandistic and vaudeville interlude. BUT EVEN RUSHFAN Karmakanic - Do you tango? A cibernetic, progressive tango, very cool. 3) SNICOLETTE: Indigo Profundo: Athy. New music for my ears. I can't say which South American style or rhythm it is inspired by, the sound seems to me very meditative, almost new age, but still deeply felt. Passionate music in its being delicate. I like it much more than Carlos Reyes' piece BUT EVEN The Anders: Rode Mor: Grillbaren. Who is the singer? A Scandinavian Tom Waits? Excellent musical progression and excellent guitar solo near to the end. Much better than Alexander Klinken for my taste. 4) Dr John. Oh yes, this is a truly hallucinatory trip, with the slowness and repetitiveness of a trip. Acid or Marja? BUT EVEN My GANG Le Radici e Le Ali 5) MiCkY Tito Puente and MY Vinicio Capossela: Viva Mambo! 6) MATHMAN: Metalachi: Crazy Train. This music also sounds new to my ears. Virtuosity on the violin, mariachi trumpet, coarse singing typical of metalheads. Ramshackle, mad, vaguely melodic mood. The best pieces in my opinion are those with the violin and the trumpets. Almost grotesque music if not that it is also amused. The emotion it conveys is ambivalent. However, good creative effort in the arrangements. 7) TCAT: Shearwater - Rooks. Good commercial song, with an emphatic song and a good arpeggio on the guitar. The drums could have been a little more creative. The singer has talent. BUT EVEN MY PAOLO CONTE TANGO BLUES BUT EVEN Machinemessiah PAT METHENY 8) MICKY Willy Bobo: very relaxing. What did they smoke? 8) Little Steven featuring b. Springsteen. Native Son. This song is a commercial song, with a reggae rhythm, guided by the keyboards and the drums, which sings the pride of the Native American tribes, and the nursery rhyme is a real Sioux song. Song capable of combining the political message with a captivating tune. Easy listening. Ho Ka Hey Wah Nah Ho Ka Hey Wah Nah Woh Ho Ka Hey Wah Nah Ho Ka Hey Wah Nah Woh [War Cry of the Lakota Sioux - "Let's Go - Now"] Life was forever when we were young The land was protected for everyone Forever as long as the rivers run But now the water no longer comes And now all that remains Is darkness and poisoned earth And now before it's too late We must provide our own new birth I am Native American The question of honor you must decide The soul of the nation has been denied Our dreams have been stolen before our eyes How do you say there's no tomorrow to a child? From us there is much to learn There is so much you've forgotten You can't change me Try and understand I am proud of who I am I am Native American We must try and remember what we're here for You will suffer the darkness alone no more You will have the strength of all of us gathered here today That is something they can never take away I am Native American 9) RAFF: Waters of March. Pleasent and commercial and relaxing song. Saudade a gogo but with gladness. I prefer the cover sung by Mina. 10) MACHINEMESSIAH - Los prisonieros. Strange punk-pop music, are they the Green Day of Chile? It's a curious sound. & AMOR AMERICANO. Edited by jamesbaldwin - June 29 2020 at 19:20 |

Before I post my votes, here's another out of competition entry. I was thinking about putting this one in the competition, but it may need the whole album to fully reveal its magic; the album as a whole I love to pieces. I owe knowledge of this to PA user hellogoodbye and his wonderful "Four Little Gems" polls. |

...and here are the votes of the German-Italian jury. First some honorable mentions. Kronos Quartet and Astor Piazzolla - of course this is excellent, but it is a bit like the Zero Hours album in slightly more academic and less explosive. A bit too close to what I love already. May well have voted for it had I not known Astor before. (I hope you all check out my non-entry Contrabajissimo if you don't know it yet, it's truly sensational, although I know such talking isn't always helpful.) Snicolette - I like your out of competition entry far more than the one you put up for the vote; same micky; Bobo is supercool and the clear winner of the micky vs. micky vs. micky vs. micky poll, followed by Dr John. The other two - not so much. I first heard Medocino as a terrible German cover version, and that has killed that song for me. Hauser Orkater - good stuff already written; very original and works very well as what it is. As a piece of music for pure listening pleasure not quite up there. Meta Meta - Very good, I need to check out more of this band. However I prefer the one from the earlier poll, so no vote this time. Rodrigo e Gabriela - Well done posting this, I didn't know it and I like it. Now it's a little bit less subtle than the ones I voted for and a bit more predictable. Lula Côrtes & Zé Ramalho and Francesco Guccini - didn't click at first listening and the voices need some getting used to. But both of these have potential, they sound as if it could be worthwhile to give them some more spins. As I wrote earlier, I'll be voting Inti-Illimano Nuevo and... Chicoria Sanchez - great subtle guitar piece, very nice development. Alexandre Klinke - Now this is pretty clearly prog, and the kind of modern prog that I like. A surprising combination of a very sharp arrangement and a rather smooth Latin American mood. Three very convincing winners this time. By the way, I voted for Klinke - Lugar (the song)... I'm writing this because that's not the song I get when I follow the bandcamp link posted by Machinemessiah without looking around there.

I am glad you enjoyed Athy, I went back and forth on which to present, as I don't know a lot of Latin American music. I really only had two other potentials, was thinking of "Nuevo Laredo," which Micky posted after my mention of "Mendocino," which is special to me and also a song by a rock band, Concrete Blonde, "Under A Mexican Moon." I do like that Carlos plays both harp and violin and his live energy. Thank you for the serious listen to both.

Hey Lewian good entries there.. you got me twice, with a vote and also with the out-of-competition (glad to see you liked Chicoria also! ) Klinke was from 'The Anders' .. to me it shows not as a link but as an embedded page; if I scroll down I can play the song right there. And now that it comes to it.. this is really difficult. I see now why people delay their votes.. 'Lugar' grew big time on me in the span of only a few listens… I think I like it now much more than Meta Meta.. (I classify them the same). I believe not to affect my voting, but I'm updating my review on page 6 and my voting post up on this same page including it in the honored mentions. Well done! great song! Yeah but he said Caribbean Islands that speak Spanish. Bahamas is an English colony populated by mostly African descendents. Exuma is freak folk. Nothing even remotely Latin about it.

You are right. Bahamas is not part of Latin America, but the music in this poll can also have Latin American influences, and while Exuma is quite unique and from the Bahamas, his music arguably does have Latin American influence from Caribbean island music, such as calypso and reggae.

Well, I admit I forgot the Bahamas exception (while I remembered French and Dutch Guyana). But anyway, I agree with Logan and mathman0806. Many types of Caribbean folk have African influences. In fact, I've suggested the opening of a new genre of prog: Afro-Latin American jazz-rock/fusion.
