I do think one other thing is very different than 2016. 45 has been the President now for about 4 years. So it is clear what he has done and not done. Both working class and educated women seem to be leaving the flock, IF the polls are correct. This is in part why his way is narrowing. Any farmers who are winning under his policies, and all the coal that's been brought back, should make those voters think twice about voting for him again, if they are honest with themselves. That could be a pretty big if, but I don't see a lot of "winning," in those sectors, either.

A word of caution. Opinion polls are becoming more and more unreliable, over there with you Americans, and here in Blighty. They seem to miss a large section of the population, and, whether liberals like it, or not, the fact of the matter is that the (sizeable) portion of the electorate who voted Trumpalot in have not disappeared, and many of them will not have changed their opinions.
Whilst I would not put a wager on him being re-elected, it is not an impossibility. Biden is the archetypal professional politician, the man who has been through the system, the man who is the sober choice. The people who enthusiastically rejected such men have not gone away. Neither do they appear much on the polls.
As I have said before, politics in Western nations is changing beyond recognition of the times we were brought up in. Virtually gone are the old arguments between left and right. We now live in an era of liberals/progressives v conservatives/traditionalists, and they seem to find it impossible to come to any sort of consensus. Even if Biden wins, that will not go away.

Notice, my IF. I agree, there doesn't seem to be a sort of middle ground and the contempt for the other on both sides makes it very difficult to compromise.

The shallow end of the gene pool will willingly follow Trump if he promises that the Coronavirus will continue to vanish, and all work will be restored, bigger and better than ever before, terrific, fantastic, wonderful, and beautiful, so beautiful, if they vote for him. And that's a lot of people.
I bet he's kicking himself now that he's named it the Chinese virus instead of the Democratic virus.

I saw a joke for this on-line...the "Settle for Biden" t-shirts. Sadly, there really is way too much truth to that. Out of 300 million people, how are these two individuals seriously the best we have to choose from for what is arguably the most important job in the world. On one side you have a rabid fan base and on the other you have a rabid settling for someone else base.

Does 'Settle for Biden' mean something else in the US than in does in the UK? I read that sentence roughly as: Might as well vote for Biden as we've got nothing better to offer.
I've looked at the merchandise site (something called teespring.com) to make sure this is genuine, and as far as I can see, it is. What does it mean in American English then? Same as: vote for Biden?

since when.... they were right in 2016.. were right in 2017... dead on in 2018.
as I've gone into at some length... the problem with 2016 wasn't the polling.. it was how they were interpreted.. which pundits.. the professionals who interpret polls learned. from and thus have got every single election right since then.
They as anyone.. make mistakes and then learn why .. and adjust.

and that is why privately.. the professional GOP set are already privately writing off Michigan as he only won it by a hair in a campaign where EVERY single break went his way.. now everything is going against him. Pollsters have it correct.. based on past history.. adn recent history where the state went hard blue in 2018. Michigan is lost to him..
...minus a catastrophic change in the campaign dynamics which is completely out of his hands.. which could happen.. it is 2020 for God's sakes...
It ain't over till it is over. And again. .that is why Trump should lose.. so many were scarred by the 2016 experience that everyone expects Trump to pull not one.. but another. royal flush from his ass and win again. There is no apathy.. no overconfidence regardless of what polls say. If Democrats turn out.. he loses. .simple as that. It's all in the numbers. The Republican base is not enough if Democrats turn out. That was the lesson of 2018....

It basically means I’d rather vote for one of the other 299,999,999 Americans but since my choices are Trump or Biden I’ll settle for Biden. To quote an old rock song “if you can’t love the one you want, love the one your with.”

It's June...its way to early to read much of anything coming out of the polls. Most years so much sh*t can happen between now and November, and with how 2020 is going we might not even have a November to look forward to. I would hope democrats wouldn't get complacent again after 2016 and I'm sure there will some 'silent majority' type folks who aren't going to turn up in polls that vote for trump again. But at this stage, to feel comfortable with any prediction one way or another is foolhardy.

Lol I like that.
Sadly, we did have some sort of primary this year where Biden was the chosen one. Hopefully all those people who came out for him will come out again in November.

so far they have so far thorugh this virus.... people are in force to vote..
turnout in 2018 was highest in a 100 years.. virus or not.. I strongly suspect 2020 will be the same. The real positive to this country that Trump has brought.. well.. other than putting a bullet in the f**king head of the already on life support Republican Party.. and destroying it. However to be fair he didn't do that as much as Congress did by having no guiding principal or ideology any more .. or clue how to govern and thus could not reign him in..
however the other real benefit to the country seems to have been a reawakening of 'civic duty'. The lack of .. is exactly why we got saddled with Trump. That 30-40% (which is the Republican Party) becomes 50% when people don't bother to get out and vote. They have long had a power over and above their actual numbers. They have been motivated to vote.. the Democrats.. umm.. not so much so. That goes much to very distinct differences between the parties. .and where the greatest strength of the Democratic Party.. its diversity and lack of a ideological purity is also its greatest weakness.
unless truly motivated or united.. which is exactly what Trump has done. So yeah.. I'm all in for Biden... and if it come to it.. all in for voting for his corpse if it comes to it. It is 2020.. don't think we've seen an end to the craziness.. the insanity..

I've just seen the latest infection numbers in the US and seeing the Republican response across the red states being: open everything up, combined with unprotected indoor rallies by the president, I can't help but wonder if this isn't some revenge plot along the lines of: We know we'll lose the election, so we're going to make you infidels die. Like some sort of gigantic White House led culling of the unfaithful and faithful alike.
