Well, the theme of the next poll is 

1) Latin American songs 

or 

2) Songs with influences taken from Latin American music or rhythms.

By Latin American music I mean the music of Central America and South America. So, from Mexico to Patagony or Tierra del Fuego, passing through all the states that are in the middle, including the Caribbean islands. They are all countries where Spanish is spoken, with the exception of Brazil, where Portuguese is spoken (There is also some state that was a French or Dutch colony).

In this way, I believe the topic is vast enough to allow everyone to participate. For example, if one likes reggae, he could post a Bob Marley song, but also a Police or Clash etc song contaminated with the rhythm of the reggae. I give this example because it contains three very famous artists, obviously I don't want to give any suggestions. 

Now, Latin American music is really varied: mariachi, latin rock, chicano rock, rock steady, ska, raggae, mambo, Caribbean folk, salsa and bachata, latin american folk, bossanova, beguine, rumba, samba, cha cha cha, latin jazz, lambada, tango.... and many other types of music that don't come to mind now. 

Pay attention: Dont post Spanish or Portuguese music, unless it is influenced by Latin American rhythms. For example, Gypsy Kings mostly play Spanish music, not Latin American (flamenco is Spanish music), although some of their songs make a mixture of Spanish and Latin American music. 

Everyone will judge himself: if one believes that a pop/rock song has a clear, evident contamination with Latin American music (in the sense of rhythm, composition or arrangement), he is free to post it. The important thing is that the Latin American influence is clearly evident. 





nice!   I think I have picked out a winner... and when I say a winner.. I mean I'll be surprised if it doesn't win LOL For while it fits what you want.. it isn't a commonly thought of as a musical export of Latin America.

It is actually within the new-age genre, yet I find it as a standout album. I like new-age "idea", but enjoy a real minority off the bulk. This is one of the most special ones for me.

Unfortunately this is not for me. Not that I would describe it as bad, but the tone of it is somewhat new age-like. At times it also sounds like something from a movie soundtrack which is of course not a bad thing. Just not for me. I like the piano part around 3:00 though.

Charles Ives - Piano Sonata No. 2: 3rd Movement

This is really beautiful. At the same time it's a somewhat eccentric combination of different style elements: banality meets atonality, 19th Century meets 20th Centory and so on - "romanticism on acid" would be an appropriate description I imagine. There's a clear reference to the main theme in the first movement of Beethoven's fifth symphony. Should be another contender.

Alice Cooper - Grande Finale

I haven't been listening much to Alice Cooper either, but I had a couple of albums copied to cassette tapes back in ancient times (School's Out was not one of them). Knowing about the scenic dimentions of Alice Cooper concerts back in the 70's, I guess I saw it as being more about the spectacular and over-the-top than artistic subtlety. I neverthess really enjoy this track. The intro in particular is intriguing. It gets a bit too much later with wind instruments and strings. There's almost something musical-like about it.

Anoushka Shankar and Patricia Kopatchinskaja - Raga Piloo

I'm not that familiar with Indian music, apart from The Beatles' adventures into that area, but I really like the meditative sound of this track. For music that minimalistic it is rather long, but it doesn't really matter, mainly because of the mentioned meditative quality about it. I also really like the ambiguity with regards to tonality. At times it is Mixolydian, then Dorian, then there is a major 7th (the "leading note" in western functional harmony). And unlike most western music, the rhythm isn't fixed to a well defined pulse, resulting in a certain atmospheric quality. Should be a contender for my votes.

As for your proposal, Cristi, to make a poll based on catchy songs, okay, the spirit of this interactive poll is to be a team that organizes polls proposing music not present here in PA that we are passionate about, especially if the songs are not famous, and which we can discuss together. The important thing is that, if we want to give themes, the choice can be very varied, so that everyone can participate. 

I also agree with the idea of ​​occasionally proposing prog-related or proto-prog music present here in PA or which we believe may be present. If Mike (TCat) wants to do such a poll in the future, I would be happy.

Finally got to listen to all the songs. I will need a re-listen and then vote. I think the field was a little harder to get through than usual, but some tracks undoubtedly stand out.

Hadn't seen this, delighted that it clicked! Actually I think in some respects we are very different. However, you are open minded, and you have the gift and ability to hear if something is really good and special and to get into it even if it's off your tracks, that's what I like about you.

yeah.. Lorenzo is the man... final word which we all respect... while I am the muscle behind his throne..

Lorenzo took this week and the theme he said he wanted to do was the Latino heat thing man

next week Mathman wanted to try as a first time poll starter and with a theme.. that is secret haha.. but he told me what he wanted to do and I think you all will really like it.

Cristi baby.. I'd let Lorenzo know you wanted to do one and ask him to slot you in.  And for my two cents.. your theme idea has potential.. but I'd think you'd be wise to sharpen it a bit.  Catchy?  A bit too broad IMO.. is that not what implicitly suggested our suggestions were back in the open ended polls.  Didn't seem like anyone tried to choose anything obtuse.. or particularly tuneless.. like good avant guard kind of stuff hahah.

It surely could. I think we respect Lorenzo as the head manager of these polls, so he could call you to do it as one of the next ones; not sure whether there are already other candidates lined up.

hah.. I can really dig that. Even stone cold sober which is saying something.  Normally I have as much time for high brow critical pieces on art.. music or not.. as I do being castrated, catching shotgun blasts in the chest, or marrying a redhead again. However I see the merit in trying to interpret the works of musical artists in which melody and accessibility is but an afterthought. 

Interesting. Thanks for mentioning that. Doesn't heighten my enjoyment of it.. but reflects my interest in the piece through the multiple listens.

obtw....That is something Pedro should read.. hell.. I'm calling my shot now. I'd give up drinking for a week if Pedro chimed in on this...  Pedro style of course..

I mispoke about the saucepan song.. no song befitted more from repeated re listens than this one. Quite simply it never has been a style of music that I relate to. Like my emotions I am with my music. I tend to run very hot.. and very cold and either like my music loud and brash...sack and pillage rape the cattle and stampede the womenfolk kind of music .. usually American in nature for none do it better than us..or dense and introspective.. more European. .for none do it better than they do...meditative.. transportational... rainy days on the couch with a good book kind of music if you.

Music feeds..reinforces my emotions .. not stimulating my head.. music for me is an escape from thinking too much. 

With this one..   it was more than what I am not wired to do.. think while listening. Considering the patterns. .the repetitions..  I can't say I enjoyed this as much as I found it probably the most interesting of the whole bunch. I'm not sure if I care to explore him or those like Riley or Reich deeper than what i heard here.. but I'm considering it.. and that in itself.. is quite the compliment.

The Leigh track.. oh yeah.. great choice by my better half.  One of the few I know with better tastes than me
(her taste in men notwithstanding)/ I really dug the percussian centric.. tribalesque nature of it. Add in a  good video.. with lots of chicks. Hell yeah.. what was not to love. Was immediately in the top 3 ... until it wasn't.. (perhaps a car chase or an explosion or two in the video might have saved it)

then along from the middle of the pack came the Matsui song..  this one was a grower.. it didn't wow you from the start (perhaps why it got zero love.. zero votes) but upon repeated listens it did in my head what the Leigh did via a video.. taking you to places unknown.. distant. .mysterious... I really grew to like this one and it gets the first vote!
