I suppose I should get over the prog poll and give those some listens... there is one in particular I do want to hear especially . So I guess it is time to vote... and I'll start from the bottom up and offer my thoughts till I get to the final 3.. but bottom here is of course very relative for as I mentioned earlier there wasn't a bad one in the bunch.

internet went down here and lost original post and had to wait for it to come up
as I noted earlier.. some of these suggestions naturally fell in together. And were not just similar stylistically but also that in my enjoyment of them is very much mood based. I love piano based classical music.. it is a powerful scratch to the itch that my very melancholic nature. The piano works of Grieg and Rach are among my most cherished and beloved pieces of music.. therein is the rub. While I enjoyed both of these.. they lack the sheer emotional impact of similar style pieces I love so much they'll be vying for space in my ears as I leave this earth. |

one thing both Raff and I have noted over years of going to various prog festivals... and has become an all too common refrain great live band.. could not see sitting at home and listening to this. very good.. and could see me enjoying this with a beer in one hand.. a .. my wife in the other in some smoky dive somewhere.. the more dangerous the better. Best BOC show we saw was in that run down and dive quality bar in the Charm City. Atmosphere is as much to enjoying music as the music itself. Very good... but minus a live setting.. or even a live video (preferably with a few car crashes, explosiions or dancing broads) it had too many to climb over to get higher up.

Elizabeth Reed falls in to this group. my favorite instrumental ever and a top 10 alltime favorite song
. but a non vote for me.. as I know every note of it committed to not just the head.. but the soul.
like anyone I love a good old fashioned instrumental.. definitely really dug teh Peace & Quiet one and TBH after the first round of listens I would have had it in top 3.. but it did get bumped. one of my alt suggetions for this theme was from an artist I wanted added here but got outvoted on.. I think the main reason it slipped is I thought this one though not as wild .. had a bit more to it.. and the female vocals were the special sauce both of these were missing to crack the top 3 .. thus while good.. with this batch of suggestions.. a mere rock instrumental would have not only top that McPhee one. That said .. agian.. completely enjoyed them both

next up... these two though opposites ends of the same gig .... i really loved both.
was very impressed Cristi . didn't know you were a such a fan of his to have pulled that deep cut out of your ass like that. A known artist for sure.. but how many know him for one and only one song by him (great song as it is). I hadn't heard that in many many years. Very enjoyable.. and a good trip down memory lane.
first off.. really great to see you join in. You do have some great tastes and wide ranging taste in which we do share that was a great one and really enjoyed that.. perhaps with a few more listens that all the others had... and that my top 3 all benefited from it could have cracked the top 3. Also.. note next weeks theme. Do join in.. |

after this one.. it really got tough and were my contenders for the top 3...and all at some point occupied a prelimnary top 3 slot
I do love the exotic and that was really good.. but perhaps it is loving east west fusions in rock.. which there have been so many probably if anything tamped down the exotic factor. Again I really enjoyed it but having heard enough similar fusions it sort of fell behind not the more exotic if you will in the wow factor.. but the more progressive and experimental forms of music that is really where i sort of hang my hat these days in thirsting for discovery.

different yes.. but sort of lumped them together because quite honestly.. I couldn't choose which I liked best. Then again it was hard to put either against my choice in the poll ..who absolutely ruled her instrument.. the music equisate...and didn't hurt she had that smile that a man would kill to be on the receiving end of.. that type that just melts your heart man and turns your knees to jelly. Neither was to be found here but comparing these to mine was not exactly fair and so I did. While I found the Era track... flawless.. it was lacking something to me that Scott's track had in spades... spirit emotion.. energy ... youth.. umm hmm.. you can not only see it... I felt it...and that is what I feed off with music. So yeah Scott I really enjoyed that and plan to check out more from her. That was a strong contender to make my top 3 but it did get bumped down slightly late ...

as I noted.. this one was the only one right out of the gate to grab me and had the iniitual #1 slot.. .shock and awe kind of sh*t the way only a group of hot women absolutely destroying it can... but the problem with shock and awe... it wears off and it lost out to others whose appeal grew with repeated listens .. not lessened. that said.. it did f**king rule... down to my final and top 6... I'll get those in a bit.. time to get back to work here

This is from the soundtrack CD to the film Powaqqatsi, which is the sequel to the classic Koyaanisqatsi, and the second film of the Qatsi trilogy. Because this film is about the impact of industrialisation on the Third World, the music of the film has a distinctly world-music sound. I believe the YouTube link I provided is from the CD rather than from the film itself (the music on the Qatsi trilogy CDs differs noticeably from the music on the films themselves). Although Koyaanisqatsi is my favourite film of the trilogy, "CAUGHT!" is my favourite piece of music from the trilogy, and is the highlight of the film Powaqqatsi, both in terms of the music itself, and the accompanying visuals. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

#6.. hard decision between this and numero fiveO.. so was going to flip a coin.. and then it came to me.. and decided a whiskey bottle toss would decide it..
where the f**k did you find this .. and what 70's police sitcom did that soundtrack music come from. LOVED it and this was definitely a top 3'r until a whiskey bottle and some dope pushed it down. Great find...

now that is avant man.. and I broke out the saucepan and wooden spoon for this one true avant music.. .music so f**king bad.. that... it is GOOD. Well.. let me rephrase that. Not good but deifnitely Interesting and that I can dig. Oh for sure no 'tune' benefited more from repeated listens than this one..it started from the bottom.. envision a puddle of urine and vomit.. and yet and with each one I found more to it until it cracked my top 6... but it sure wasn't going higher than that but I couldn't decide? 5 or 6? Then it came to me.. music this interesting is worth a trip to the office this week during Thirsty Thursday Liquid Lunch hour... last one by Christian got an empty beer can tossed at me by Sean... I expect nothing less than Jordan's nearly full whiskey bottle he keeps in his filing cabinet. any less.. and i'll be severely disappointed for the thought of it propelled this work of aural torture.. to a sate of appreciation I can really dig.. great suggestion

#4 and #3
The Leigh track.. oh yeah.. great choice by my better half. One of the few I know with better tastes than me (her taste in men notwithstanding)/ I really dug the percussian centric.. tribalesque nature of it. Add in a good video.. with lots of chicks. Hell yeah.. what was not to love. Was immediately in the top 3 ... until it wasn't.. (perhaps a car chase or an explosion or two in the video might have saved it) then along from the middle of the pack came the Matsui song.. this one was a grower.. it didn't wow you from the start (perhaps why it got zero love.. zero votes) but upon repeated listens it did in my head what the Leigh did via a video.. taking you to places unknown.. distant. .mysterious... I really grew to like this one and it gets the first vote! excellent suggestion!

I mispoke about the saucepan song.. no song befitted more from repeated re listens than this one. Quite simply it never has been a style of music that I relate to. Like my emotions I am with my music. I tend to run very hot.. and very cold and either like my music loud and brash...sack and pillage rape the cattle and stampede the womenfolk kind of music .. usually American in nature for none do it better than us..or dense and introspective.. more European. .for none do it better than they do...meditative.. transportational... rainy days on the couch with a good book kind of music if you. Music feeds..reinforces my emotions .. not stimulating my head.. music for me is an escape from thinking too much. With this one.. it was more than what I am not wired to do.. think while listening. Considering the patterns. .the repetitions.. I can't say I enjoyed this as much as I found it probably the most interesting of the whole bunch. I'm not sure if I care to explore him or those like Riley or Reich deeper than what i heard here.. but I'm considering it.. and that in itself.. is quite the compliment. Excellent suggestion and thanks!

and not a surprising #!
considering how much I find your tastes are rather aligned to some of my evolving tastes (I haven't told you how much I adored those Schmidt suggestions you put out) .. this one did take a few listens to really bite but found it it hit straight into the kind of place music like Floyd once took up. Music I love.. that mid 70's Battiato actually has taken over for me.. that absolute chill zone out.. turn the brain off...fire up a J ...turn out the lights and leave your body and mind for while. Definitely interested to hear from them.
