With millions of people without work, or those who had to take a pay cut to keep their job, I am pissed with the MLB players who refuse to take a pay cut to play half a season. Why not fire them all and let the minor league players play? Remember the 80's when they went on strike? Iv'e had enough of their primadonna attitudes. Empty stands may end professional sports as we know it. No revenue coming in = can't pay players, announcers, ground crew, etc. I say...about time.
What are your thoughts? |

I always find it interesting that people like to side with billionaires in disputes over money. Surely they are above greed...I mean its not like there was a deal in place already to pay the players prorated salaries tied to length of season that was agreed upon by both sides...oh wait! |

Yeah, have to agree. I stopped following the sport after the steroids era. All those hallowed home run records broken by cheaters. That ruined the game for me. Mark McGwire will never fill the shoes of Roger Maris and Barry Bonds will never fill the shoes of Hank Aaron. |

And the season my Dodgers won the series and The Goose beaned The Penguin (my favorite player, Ron Cey). Yeah, haven't followed the sport in about 30 years. Too much standing around. I like it when a relief pitcher comes in for one batter, then the manager goes to the mound and they all stand around long enough to listen to Supper's Ready before play resumes.

welll that billion dollar TV contract the owners signed and not opening the books to show why the players in fact things are as bad to need to take a pay cut as they say makes hard to really be angry with the players.. to be honest.. they both sort of deserve each other so if both lose.. cool with that. I need many things in my life... we need many things in this country right now.. f**king games and sports are not one of them. |

Hi,
The only thing I can watch is soccer, but in America the commercial situations make it impossible to even see the highlights from Italy, Spain, Germany, England and so on ... and the networks are at fault for that ... the main issue being, of course, the amount of money they paid these American leagues for the games, and now they are stuck having to pay for nothing. In the end, this will mean less money for these networks, and the players, and I kinda think that is good ... the way these things were escalating was getting out of hand, and needed to get brought down to reality. Not to mention that not very many people will exactly be able to fill out a stadium in the next 3 to 4 or 5 years, which is going to seriously cut down the amount of revenue a team can make, and these teams are too stupid and behind the times counting their money to make sure they own the streaming rights, which is going to be stolen from under their feet! And that means less money for the players! Maybe I'll even see a game ... since paying $100 for it and then $5 for a small sized coke glass ... is too much way out of my league and if things continue as they are ... it will be the same for many more Americans. I mean ... can you really imagine seeing the Yankees for a $20 dollar ticket? Well, maybe, but the small popcorn will cost $30 and the small coke $10!

Future of baseball?? It will return next year, I do fear this year is all but done. With the last negotiation going down the toilet. A shortened season would be cool, I actually think they don't want to do it because a shorter season could lead to the norm, with less pay.
I have to think some teams could be in much bigger trouble than is being reported. Players would need a minimum of 3 weeks to get in game mode, especially pitchers so starting the season mid July would probably be a no go, plus unless stadiums open up where is the revenue going to come from? You could make all the games PPV. It's a mess however you look at it.

Hi, 50 cents a game I hope ... that way I can at least enjoy those nasty curve balls and breaking balls ... but it was hard to enjoy these days when I did get to see Nolan Ryan at Anaheim Stadium and some of those balls started way up above your head and ended under you knees! those were the days ... cue up the song!

I saw him here and there on TV when he was with Texas when ESPN became available, still throwing close to 100 mph in his mid-40s. I would have loved to have seen him when he was with the Angels, but that was before I started following the game. I never got to see him in the 1980s when he was with Houston. For some reason I never made it to a game when Houston came into Philadelphia. Amazing pitcher and I'm glad you brought up his curve ball. The press was always in such awe of his powerful fastballs, that most missed how great his curve ball was.

My thoughts? You blaming the players for this is dead wrong.

Well contracts may not be terminated at anytime, I don't think it is that easy. These are employment contracts that I am sure cover a lot of different scenarios. What is stopping them is just the same as any other union dispute....money. It's called professional sports for a reason, its a massive business. I don't think it is just the players, I don't think professional sports will end as we know it, for 2020 yes.

Please excuse what I am about to say because I truly have no reason to get into an internet fight but that's an amazingly simplistic view and ignores everything that's been going on between the owners, MLB, and the players. Have you been following this drama since they started talking about playing again because it doesn't sound like you're following it closely enough Regarding contracts, players can be released at any time but baseball contracts are guaranteed. That means the clubs would still have to pay the player who was just released. Let's say you have a guy signed to a five year contract and you're paying him 20 mil per year. Why would any team owner release that player when they would still have to pay that player? It makes no sense

What a mess...First week in and already Covid is a muck in the MLB. I am not surprised, after all the moanin about pay the MLB failed to install better measures.
The season needs to be cancelled, its only gonna get worse.

I've watched the first four Detroit Tigers' games and I can say that I am glad that baseball is back...even the minor league variety played by the Tigers, but it is sort of surreal watching the games with all the empty seats. They definitely need to do away with the fake clap tracks. Watching the game last night and they are introducing the KC Royals and they are getting cheered. I am sorry, but they would most likely have been booed if there had been a real crowd. I hope that they can make it through the season, but I suspect that it is going to be difficult the way illnesses tend to make their way through a clubhouse and with all of the travelling, I can see it being spread throughout the entire group of teams that are playing each other in the three sections.

Hi, I think the biggest issue and problem is the media ... that is STILL paying a huge amount of money and they are not getting a chance to display the wares on the stadia or have an announcer say something about the product. All in all, the players are just wanting a part of the money that they deserve to get ... so someone gets 2 billion from the networks, and YOU DON'T WANT ANY OF IT? .... pure profit for the owner! I think that the American "big name" sports, need a huge come down ... that would be football, baseball and basketball and even maybe hockey ... they (all) will not function correctly without the extra revenue incoming, which will make many of these teams a not very good investment for the next couple of years! I do not believe that full stadiums are going to happen again in the next 2 years ... maybe! ... and all 4 of those sports are dragging their feet about streaming, because they are ALL tied to the networks with a long term contract ... and the TV networks ARE NOT going to let you out of those contracts, SINCE IT WILL HELP KILL THEIR TV AUDIENCE (for an internet audience instead!). A lot of things are an issue ... and I'm not even sure I am hitting 10% of them ... but the players and owners will never really clarify all this stuff! There is obviously more money around than we know or at least a team or two would have filed for bankruptcy right now!
