Inspired by Lindsay Ellis youtube vlogg about musicals I collected the top of classic musicals in a poll. Which is the one you most shamelessly embalish yourself with. Which is your treasure islend guilty pleasure? Is it the doubble whammy with Julie Andrews (Sound of music and Poppins), the whimzickle duo of Singing and My Fair Lady, the unique West Side Story, or the pioneer in Wizard of Oz premiered as early as 1939, perhaps the first great live action fantasy film (fantasy musical) in history.

Sound of Music by light years. Every last song is a classic. They are all memorable and hummable in the extreme.
I didn't like Sound of Music as a kid, but have grown to love it over the years. I also didn't like West Side Story as a kid, but on that one have gone from mere dislike to straight up despising it. Ridiculous show. Singing in the rain is nice. The rest I can do without... especially Wizard.

The Sound Of Music, one of my favourite films of all time! Also loved The Wizard Of Oz as a kid. West Side Story is unique and wonderful. My Fair Lady was a family favourite as a kid too... Not seen the other too, but I understand that SITR is a classic

Hi,
I'm not, necessarily, into musicals at all ... my idea of a musical would be something like ALL THAT JAZZ, but that dancing and picture design in it is way far ahead of a lot of films in that there is actually a story. The other one would be CARMEN done up by Carlos Saura with the subtext being the old line of dancers against the new line of dancers ... and an incredible visual experience that only Carlos Saura can give you ... and the main line in it? "You dance with your eyes, not your ass!" .... it ought to give you an idea of how serious the dancing in it is. Voted for WEST SIDE STORY because it was massive when it first came out, which I had heard in Brazil, where a lot of its music was heard and I think one song made a hit on their radio ... and listening to it later, one can hardly fault the excellent design of the picture, even with cardboard sets, which was more like being in a theater to watch this than a real film ... it worked really well ... but I think it signaled that the quality and idea for musicals were changing. THE SOUND OF MUSIC gained a lot of attention by the movie which was really well done ... even if Julie Andrews says that parts of it were heck to do!

ALL are fantastic but I have to go with the one that has stuck with me over the course of my entire life: The Sound of Music. I really thought I was going to grow up and marry Maria (aka Julie Andrews). (And, eventually, I did.)

I was forced to endure The Sound of Music by my parents when I just wanted to watch a James Bond movie. For that reason I dislike that film and it's music. I've always liked West Side Story, so it gets my vote.

None. Don't care for musicals. Maybe Paint Your Wagon because at least it has Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood.

Are you ready? The only Sound of Music I love dearly ... is ... the song by The Bonzo Dog Band! ![]() But the one film that always stuck in my mind VISUALLY was the insanity done in SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS ... which was really well done in the film. Other than that, it's really hard to not like one man dancing with an umbrella in the rain!

That's my favourite dance one.
I actually love that too, and the self-titled song from it (ELO & Olivia Newton John). I took some stick when I said I preferred it to Rush's Xanadu years ago, but one of out creative members ended up creating a gif with Olivia Newton John morphing into Geddy Lee and back again.
This is rather horrible and sad, but I was researching the Heaven's Gate cult, and there is a home Christmas video that thy made with the group singing their own disturbing version of Do Rei Mi off of the Sound of Music (the leaders of the cult called themselves Ti and Do). It kind of burned into my brain so now when I think of that Sound of Music song, their adapted lyrics and voices always come to mind. It's not like Alex DeLarge having "Ludwig van's "glorious Ninth" spoiled by the Ludovico technique as I had never liked The Sound of Music to begin with (and always found it creepy). |

Hi, Hmmmm ... we need to get you to listen to some PDQ BACH ... his 9th versions are the best all around! So are a few other things, but we will let you catch up with them yourself! Don't forget the operettas and many of the baroque songs! It's really hard to not mention it, but a lot of the things PDQ did would really make this very PROGRESSIVE in content and description ... but this might be way too eccentric for some PA folks, right?
