Ok, then you must listen also "Stormwatch"! It was my first Jethro album and become obsessed immediately! Also, compilation "Living In the Past" is must to Jethro-fans, includes just so many great non-album singles!

North Sea Oil - Good straight forward energic song
Orion - Idk, I like it but don't love it
Home - Good slow song. I like it a lot.
Dark Ages - Epic song, wow that was good.
Warm Sporran - Kind of a funky feel to this, it's really good.
Something's on the Move - Rockin tune, this is good.
Old Ghosts - Ok song.
Dun Ringill - Good acoustic Tull here, like it a lot.
Flying Dutchman - That was very very good. A lot of great flute in it and just a lot going on. Maybe my favorite on this album.
Elegy - What a closing instrumental. Very pretty and just great.
Good stuff, wow. But now I'm obsessed again lol. Oh well.

Howlin` Wolf: Moanin`In the Moonlight This and Howlinīs second self-titled (also known as the Rockin Chair-album) are really blues masterpieces! Right in the begin "Moanin At Midnight" brings very creepy feeling into you, when Chester starts to moan in a very haunting way! And here are "How Many More Years" (Zeppelin made cover in first album), Smokestack Lightnin` (Yardbirds made cover in Five Live Yardbirds), "Evil" & "Forty-Four" that just are Chicago-blues classics! And Howlin also made really great version of Tommy Johnsonīs "Cool Drink Of Water Blues" under name "I Asked For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline). And to this album I have to take here my man Beefheart again, Howlin was the biggest influence to his vocal style and you can really hear it! |
I think if your man Beefheart had been a member of the Who, or that band that... I don't dare to type their name but they're the first band you mention here. I think you would listen to nothing else. All other music would be forgotten and you would only ever care about that lol.
Anyway, about Magick Brother... I obviously liked it a lot. It has a very 60's sound to it, which I know is a big part of why you like it so much. I liked it and all three of those Trilogy albums very much. Their second album(Camembert Electrique) didn't really click with me the first time I listened to it.. but then I listened to it a couple more times and it did! So now I really like all of their first 5 albums. BUT the one that I ended up liking best from them was Gazeuse! I just love that jazzy sound! I certainly listened to it the most. I listened to it at least 5 times all the way through. I wouldn't really call any of them Masterpieces though. I don't use that word very often. I don't even call any Zappa album a masterpiece. I think the Grand Wazoo comes close, but For Calvin ruins it. Argus yes... that's a slam dunk for me. The Slider I think so as well(many of the songs just have SUCH a timeless feel to them). MDK obviously. And First Utterance by Comus, yes I agree with you that it is. To me there's a difference between an album being very good and being a Masterpiece.

Why? Well I understand partly because in PA it seems to be very common these days give in reviews five star to every album really more just good album. But are you afraid if you use it too often people thinking you ridiculous? Or what is it?
I now try to explain when I think album is masterpiece. Really there always is difference to me also as good album and masterpiece, even great album and masterpiece (I called yesterday that Nicoīs album great album not masterpiece.
Here I my criterians: First: it have to touch my feelings deeply. I canīt say any album masterpiece that donīt move me at all. Second: It has something unique that no albums has got before, many albums often has after that special album. Unique instrumentation with great music often rises some album as masterpiece to me. Third: It got really beautiful melodies and/or goes somewhere very extreme direction. BUT if album starts with very personal & great song and repeats that whole album, it really isnīt masterpiece. So what I think versatile albums are much often to me masterpieces, not that much consistent albums. Have to say I think many albums that are now put into classic rock canon masterpieces just because they have been something new when they came. So for example I think Ac/Dc TNT (australian version of High Voltage) masterpiece, but not really their after albums, also really not any Guns & Roses albums, because in the eighties that band just do something that has done then million times.
All the way this is of course very subjective and really havenīt got any need to start fight with somebody whatīs masterpiece & what not, although always like to hear arguments about that opinion. Anyway I think that word is used very often in many classical works, I think rock/pop music is as great music and have no reason not to use that word when I really think some music is it. Also have to say that I think there are albums many thinks masterpieces (for example Beatles Revolver & Sgt) also really Zappaīs Were Only In it for the money & Uncle Meat are masterpieces to me.

Really great to hear, it has stayed also my big favorite, maybe because that was my first touch to Jethro. If you want to continue with Jethro, then I think you should listen "Living In the Past" or go into eighties. There is still their first album "This Was" that also has special place in my heart, but I donīt think as great as their later albums, also "Too Old to Rīn`R", which is not bad, but their weakest seventies album. I think "A" is the greatest after seventies album, but it sounds really different than any other Jethro-album (originally it was going to be Ianīs solo). So I believe you will like more "The Broadsword & the Beast".

Sunday 7 albums (only 2 masterpieces): Faust: Something Dirty As almost all Faust-albums, this is really close to be masterpiece! "Herbststimmung" is so incredible beautiful! Also really love Geraldine Swayneīs voice in "Lost the Signal " & "La Sole Doree", so sad sheīs only in this album!
Van Der Graaf Generator: Pawn Hearts We have already agreeded what this album is. Listened this first time from vinyl, itīs also my first VdGG-vinyl, sounds really great, maybe even greater than from spotify! I remember Guldbamsen saying his vinyl sounded terrible, I believe it had to be US-version where they added single piece "Theme One", when vinyl side is too long at least the volume rate lows.
Dr. John: Television Doctorīs second nineties studio-album is really funky, as his many seventies albums are. One piece there is even Anthony Kiedis in second vocals! But my faves from this album are "Witchy Red" & "Shadows" that reminds Doctors four first great albums, that has feeling of New Orleans voodoo music from the swamps.
The Byrds: Byrds I have read the Byrds were said (just like the Beach Boys) US answer to the Beatles. Really their greatest albums are on the same level as Beatles best albums. But not this album. This is their last album. Roger McGuinn had been many years the only original member in band, but this album became all five original members (wiki says big money had lots to do with that). But most of the members didnīt want to put their best song material in this album, but use it in their solos, so this really isnīt the greatest Byrds album. But anyway here are also that very typical positive feeling through the album. And every Byrds album has at least few great songs, here are "Sweet Mary" from McGuinn & "Laughing" by Crosby.
Lynyrd Skynyrd: Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd This is the second masterpiece of today! Not really the first southern rock album, but I believe maybe the only album from that genre that has mellotron in two great pieces! Also this album includes with those two ballads a ragtime song and delta-blues piece. I really love also their "Nuthin Fancy" & "Street Survivors" -albums, but I think this is their only MP-album.
Can: Future Days I think this album is masterpiece to many Can-fans, but to me their MP:s are "Soundtracks", "Tago-Mago" & Ege Bamyasi". In this album they became kind of "World music band of Krautrock" that they were after Damos leaving. Nothing wrong with that, but I find their "searching time" before that more interesting. "Bel Air" is of course masterpiece, but first side is "only" really great!
Howlin`Wolf: More Real Folk Blues Chess had put all the greatest Howlin single-pieces into three previous albums, so they put whatīs left in this. But really this is no fillers-album, Chester put 100% in every piece he sang! My faves from this are "Iīll Be Around", "Neighbors", "Iīm the Wolf" & "Who Will Be Next?".

It sounds like we're basically in agreement on what a Masterpiece is. Those two Zappa albums are ones that I enjoy a lot, but I don't consider them masterpieces. Sgt Pepper, yes. Abbey Road I would probably include as well.

Pawn Hearts, yes. That's a Masterpiece I absolutely agree. And Tago Mago by Can, I agree with that one as well.
Ok, so for this afternoon... let's go with the Byrds then. The Notorious Byrd Brothers, right now.

Artificial Energy - Nice energetic song
Goin' Back - Slower, I like the harmonies a lot here.
Natural Harmony - Interesting song, good but not great I guess.
Draft Morning - Depressing song, sounds good though.
Wasn't Born to Follow - Nice upbeat tune. These guys have great harmonies.
Get to You - This is good. These guys have a great sound.
Change is Now - Not the best song on the album, great harmonies though as usual.
Old John Robertson - Energetic song here. Good.
Tribal Gathering - Interesting sound here. Good.
Dolphin's Smile - Weakest song on the album I think. Not terrible though.
Space Odyssey - Interesting song.
I wouldn't call that an all-time great album, but it was very pleasant to listen to. I definitely enjoyed it.

I really liked that! Only one somewhat filler piece, but even that wasn't bad.
Crossfire - Yeah this sounds different. It's good though and I certainly recognize his voice. Oh and there's that flute.
Fylingdale Flyer - Cool musical break in this. I like it.
Working John, Working Joe - I like the sound in this one a lot.
Black Sunday - This almost sounds like Saga. I like it
Protect and Survive - A lot of flute in this one. Another good one.
Batteries Not Included - This doesn't sound at all like Jethro Tull. It's good though.
Uniform - I like the violin here. This album's good.
4.W.D - filler
The Pine Marten's Jig - This one actually sounds like Jethro Tull.
And Further On - Real good ending piece for this album.

You choose their best album. Not also my biggest favorites in all albums, but yes, I think this album is also masterpiece and really close are also "Younger Than Yesterday" & "Fifth Dimension". Other albums really arenīt as great. And I agree with you that Beatles were greater.

Traumat / Korsakoff Oy: Split e.p. Two local punk bands, my working mate plays another of them and borrowed me this to listen. Korsakoff has right attitude, Traumat is just boring.

You choose their best album. Not also my biggest favorites in all albums, but yes, I think this album is also masterpiece and really close are also "Younger Than Yesterday" & "Fifth Dimension". Other albums really arenīt as great. And I agree with you that Beatles were greater. |
Well to me the Beatles are greater than anyone. They are the biggest selling band ever.. and they are the choice for #1 of most of the major music critics. So.. choice of the fans... choice of the critics... choice of me.

Was enjoying that album A LOT until those last 3 songs.
Beastie -This is really cool
Clasp - This is different but I like it.
Fallen On Hard Times - Sounds more classic
Flying Colours - More energy in this one. I like it a lot.
Slow Marching Band - Nice slow song, right on.
Broadsword - Yeah this is cool!
Pussy Willow - Classic sounding. I'm liking this album a lot.
Watching Me, Watching You - This song would have been TOTALLY out of place on Aqualung album lol.
Seal Driver - mostly filler, but good musical break.
Cheerio - filler
I'd say all in all good album. But kept from being great by those last 3 songs, oh well.

Tuesdayīs two albums: Wishbone Ash: Argus Have to say at first I like quite much this album, but really donīt think itīs even great, just quite ordinary good seventies album. Not quite understand, why this is added into prog, yes this has concept, but also the Ventures, Harry Partch, Frank Sinatra have made concept albums and no-one talks about prog with them. Yeah, there are some prog influences, but more I think this southern rock album, so it has lot more common for that Skynyrd album I mentioned (but no mellotron in this, it really would have fitted into ending piece "Throw Down the Sword") or the Allman Brothers Band albums. Anyway I prefer more those two than W.A. The greatest pieces are sad "the King Will Come" & "Leaf & Stream". I believe if I had heard this album in the eighties when listened Skynyrd & Allman, my opinion would be different. But now I think itīs little bit monotonous, but really not bad album at all. A little bit same kind of album that I think much greater is Spirit: Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus.
Para: s/t This also local, my working mates band. Itīs better than that yesterdayīs e.p., some kind of pop punk, reminds a little old Finnish punk band "Kollaa Kestää". "Ajallaan" is really good, quite folky piece, even got violin in it! Also one other piece got bouzouki, mandolin & banjo. Really hope they will do more "Ajallaan" -style stuff!
