Many many years ago, I remember a thread / joke about "progressive rap", wich, off course, sounded like a very unlikely cross. A lot of time passed and... well, here it is:

Sounds very interesting indeed. But why was progressive rap supposed to be a joke?

I... don't know. Maybe it sounded a bit weird as a concept back in the day. Maybe that thread is still available.

that was cool---I admire any creative people who are trying to do something with no real hope of widespread popularity. Where are they from?

Depending what you define as "progressive", it can be a part of any musical genre. The music could be more eclectic type or avant garde, the sax does it how he is playing it.
I grew up with the original rap artists like Fatback Band, SugarHill Gang, Kurtis Blow and Grandmaster Flash of the late 70's.....Today's stuff is not my cup of tea by a long shot.

That's pretty cool but i'm not sure i'd call it progressive rap. It's more like jazz hip hop. Rap is just a vocal style. Definitely more experimental than most rap oriented music. Doesn't really have super proggy characteristics though as far as this site is concerned. Progressive in the sense it's progressing hip hop for sure. Whatever you call it, i like it! Pain of Salvation had some hip hop parts in their music.

There apparently is an actual progressive rap band from India though. However, I don't remember their name. I'll look into it and report back.

Great stuff! Sounds very much like Elephant Tok's excellent first album, plus the sax player sounds like he's inspired by Guillaume Perret's experimental playing, check it out...
Only a live clip is available And here's Guillaume Perret Edited by Sagichim - May 29 2020 at 00:21 |

This is not too bad either... hip hop/experimental jazz project including Peter Brötzmann. Unfortunately they only did one album in 1993. |

Particularly the second Guillaume Perret track is awesome. I wasn't aware of this. Thanks for sharing! (if off topic...)

I don't really care how one would categorise this music, but I like it.

I must admit that I only listen to the instrumental version of the first Elephant Tok album. Superb music but, whilst I don't mind Onan's vocal delivery, I find his lyrics to be pretty lame. Don't know if you have the second Elephant Tok, but it is really good too, though quite different from the first. Guillaume Perret is excellent. |

That is simply the problem of broadth, width, depth of a certain person's way of thinking.
Is Super Mario an action game, is it a shooter? Well, he is active, way too much. And he sometimes shoots the fire balls, or fire peas, or what was that. Is Sonic platforming jump-and-run game (any oif them) an action? He's very dynamic, hyperactive. Therefore, it's action. It depends on the quantity of parallels, associations and analogies your brain is able to draw for you.

The vocals being also in French and Spanish made me pass on that but I’ll take your word for it, great album though. I agree Sitting With Bull was really different much more zehulic and jazzier, I played it maybe 3 times so it is still growing on me. |
