Pardo picks King Crimson, best album 1969

I've been watching a few album/music critics' videos and really like Sea of Tranquility with Pete Pardo. He's extremely knowledgeable about the history of rock in general--more-so than most reviewers I've seen.

Lately, he's started picking his top albums per year, starting in the mid-60's (gotten thru 1971, I think, as of typing this). 

I was happy to see that he picked In the Court of the Crimson King for his top album for 1969. He said it was a tough pick, but he "..kept coming back to [ITCOTCK]", largely because of its uniqueness and foundational importance for Progressive rock.  I'm glad he did!, and I agree. However, most of his viewers do not agree with him. The Beatles' Abbey Road,  and Led Zeppelin II seem to be the most common mentions in the video comments (I know, you can't see comments with video posted here, but go to Youtube and check them out).

Anyway, curious what Prog fans on this site think about his pick.  Here's the vid:

The KC debut is a huge deal for sure, but my heart lies with Abbey Road on this one. More killer less filler in my opinion.
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

Big KC fan here...but I can see why some might pick other lp's.....like Abbey Road , Let It Bleed, Tommy, or Led Zep 1 which imho is more important than Zep 2. Zep 1 was a major foundational album for heavy blues rock....many people wanted to be Zep after hearing that one.
I have watched a few of Pardo's videos,,,he's a bit arrogant imho.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

nice album.. but not a good year to have come out if one wanted to consider it a best album of the year.  Probably wouldn't make my objective top 10.  

while Abbey Road I suppose will top mosts lists... I'll go with one that is perhaps even better musically and was far more progressive in its musical footprint and was for sure as hell more important and influential than any album hand down that year.  Hendrix name checked it.. Miles borrowed from it.. and to say nothing of what it heralded in the next coming decade and the countless bands that owed to it.

I really like In the Court of the Crimson King, but there are several other albums to challenge it as the best album of 1969: Abbey Road, Let It Bleed, Tommy, Led Zeppelin II, Bookends, A Salty Dog...

Yes I can also see why others would pick other great albums from from that year, but I was asking whether others agree with his pick or not (or, if its too hard to choose just one?--that's also understandable). I was thinking more people here might agree than the general Youtube commenters because its a Prog site, but, of course, I could be wrong.

For myself, I agree with his pick because I'm not a huge Beatles fan, and while I love the Zeppelin albums and some of the others mentioned, everything on ITCOTCK is just plain better stuff/more memorable (and I don't even listen to 21st Century Schizoid Man anymore--its gotten a little old for me, though the rest of the tracks have not).

Pardo has not struck me as "a bit arrogant", but even if he is, hard to deny he has an incredible amount of musical knowledge/appreciation.

It's Pardo's favourite, and there is no disputing matters of taste. If he claimed it was best, well then I'd likely take issue.

While I like King Crimson, the debut is not a particular favourite of mine. I don't have one favourite from the year. There are so many I love (list got longer than I wanted):

I'm not surprised with his pick. I think he's first and foremost a music fan although his favorites are prog rock, hard rock and heavy metal although not necessarily in that order. 

Regarding your last comment though I feel the need to defend him. I know Pete personally(or at least knew him since I haven't really seen or spoken to him in several years(not counting chatting back and forth a few times on youtube).  He's actually from the same area that I grew up in so we had that in common. We also both used to write on the same prog review site pretty early on(around the turn of the century and just before also). Also, I used to see him and hang out with him at some of the old prog festivals(especially Nearfest). I will say this. He's maybe a bit opinionated(as are most music fans)but I wouldn't use the word arrogant. He's actuallly a pretty laid back guy and tolerates a lot of bashing on his videos which he usually takes with a grain of salt. However, like all of us he can get to a point where he has to say something. So although I lost touch with him I will stick up for him and say he's not a jerk or arrogant or anything like that at all. He has been doing SOT for about twenty years or so and you will never find anyone more passionate about the music than he is.

He's not 'arrogant' in that particular video. And I might have also chosen Crimson...I'm a big fan of that album and the band in general.
I have watched many of these videos lately being at home a lot...some of his and this other guy from North Carolina. Pardo seems very opinionated at times...perhaps that's a better word...but as you pointed out not an uncommon thing with hardcore music fans.
