Nicholls is wonderful and has improved considerably since the early days.

Pretty good, and suitable for the music. Great lyricist too. Though I'll admit his voice doesn't stand out to me the way some of these other singers that have been threaded on today do. He's got character, but not like Gabriel, Hammill, Fish, Lee, Plant, etc.

Never cared much for his vocals, think they're pretty much boring.

Love it most of the time.  Gets a little shrill only occasionally.
One of the most consistent bands out there.

Smooth and clean, but too monotonous. He sings in a two-note range for too long, too often; he rarely let's go or let's it rip.

I have warmed a bit to some of his solo material, but mildly.

Solo material?...

The Wake was the reason I didn't give up on prog in the 80's. The track The Magic Roundabout especially hit me like a ton of bricks. 'I'm going to take on the air its the only way out'. Its raw emotion that pulls as much from punk as it does from the 'politeness' of English prog. The Gabriel influence is there for sure and its no secret that they were big Genesis PG era fans. Pity about the stage fright that nearly destroyed the band but he overcame that in the end.

I'm an idiot. I misread Hamill.
I've since edited my post.  Apologies all.

First time I heard PN's voice was on Subterranea and I hated it (initially). Only knew the Menel albums at that point and couldn't stand "the new singer"...

But I got there in the end and love his voice now. Never better than on Frequency and The Road Of Bones!
