Okay. This is extremely difficult, because, in all honesty, it changes fairly regularly, depending on my mood and sheer love for this great band. My choice is very heavily biased towards h-era Marillion, because this incarnation has provided me with so much pleasure.
1. Chelsea Monday. The track which convinced me that we were witnessing something special 2. Blind Curve. From the album which probably is the finest fusion of commerciality and sheer prog rock genius, this set of tracks exemplifies emotion and musicianship 3. Easter. A story of the desire for peace above hatred. A beautiful Rothery solo 4. The Great Escape. The epitome of emotion, sheer emotion. The moment when I knew that this band were free of their past, and prepared to push all barriers 5. Afraid of Sunrise. So how did we now come to be? 6. This Strange Engine. Autobiography as genius, dripping with feeling, a solo to die for, and an end passage which simply takes your breath away 7. Go. A highlight of live events, a track which simply takes you away into another you 8. Neverland. Difficult to choose from Marbles, but this end track squeaks it. Brilliant exposition of emotional loss 9. Real Tears for Sale. Do whores cry? Do they feel? Does any track better exemplify the bitter taste of life? 10. The Sky Above The Rain. I cry to this. I love my wife with all of my soul, but I get this so deeply 11. The Leavers. Because every time we leave, it leaves a gap. Simply wonderful, and proof positive that this band are still alive and relevant I know, it was eleven. That’s okay. I’m allowed  For all of you who have not yet taken the plunge, please try some of these tracks. You will love them. Oh, and also try some Edison’s Children.

I would have a hard time ordering all the songs I like from them to find which are the first 10... but I do know very easily which are my 5 favourite ones:
- Script for a Jester's Tear. - Pseudo Silk Kimono / Kayleigh (yeah, it's two songs, but for me Kayleigh isn't half as brilliant if it doesn't have Pseudo Silk Kimono as an intro, and the one gives way to the other in a way that it sounds like one song). - White Russian. - The Space. - Neverland. |
