Well if we're going to play the irrational worship of "gods" game:
The way you feel about Howe is how I feel about Gilmour. His patterns and use of pentatonic scale is nothing short of stock IMHO. He's a downgrade from Hendrix put into a progressive rock setting. Howe was always like a locomotive with almost no discernible influence. That's a true musician, especially a progressive one IMHO. It's all good. I can't stand Dark Side of The Moon. Like, at all. Yes, and CTTE is my top go back to prog record. Always.

Steve Howe's industrial guitar style is probably marmite...He does play some haunting guitar parts, especially on TFTO. For a while he was my favourite stringsman....but Hackett has now floated (sic) back to numero uno...Stolt, Latimer, Petruci and Mike Holmes are in the chasing pack for third...I do think that Gilmour is VERY overated...but then I forgot Akerfelt...he is up there and the Riverside geezer and Andy Revell of TN....plenty of horses fir courses prog brothers...so hold your les paul high...😎

Wow.. really the heresy thread to me! (as we're already playing the "gods game"...) Well, in my case, I love all the guitarists mentioned from the main progressive bands. And I sum up Steven Rothery from Marillion. Not my favorite era, but like to share this video I stumbled upon on YouTube apropos the recent date : ) I play guitar from many years.. and Howe always has been an idol to me.. maybe the top one. I've managed to play some things from him… mainly acoustic… Mood for a day, the middle piece in 'The Ancient' even Clap to some extent. But I like his electric 'raw' and rocky sound, his jazzy and fierce playing, etc. So, on the main subject, for me the deal is clearly a song that maybe could be seen as 'sub-par' / not as proggy / etc. at the beggining, when one is discovering Prog / Yes / CTTE.. but that ages very very well even to the extent of listening to it more than the other songs in the album. This kind of 'inversion' with the tracks happens to me on other bands/albums.. (I started listening 'Soucerful of Secrets' with 'Let There be More Light' and 'Corporal Clegg'.. to end up on 'See-Saw' and 'Remember a Day'). In my case, I always liked Siberian Khatru; but nowadays I never cease to appreciate its uniqueness, sophistication, rythm, fantastic vocals choruses, lyrics, jazzy Howe ending, etc. Edited by Machinemessiah - April 14 2020 at 09:01 |

Siberian Khatru is indeed my least favourite song from CttE, and the one that has taken me the most to get into. Yet, it is still a great song, and I do love it... and why they put it there... well, because that's the song they had, that's the song that came to them to write and include, that's what their inspiration told them, whatever. It's still a worthy song for the greatest prog album.

I haven’t posted on here in a while. Topics haven’t changed much.
(Putting head gently above parapet to see if it’s safe to come out.) Siberian Khatru? No I don’t get the love for it either. Pretty much always skip it these days. It’s the main reason CTTE is not my top album. Although pretty much all the top album candidates have a bad song or two: - SEBTP: I know what I like - Foxtrot: Watcher - Tarkus: Jeremy Bender Etc. Yes I did say I don’t like Watcher! (Swift retreat, not it’s not safe, not safe at all...) |
