No puny little virus is going to wreck the Trump economy. Wink

His attitude seems to be: Many of you are going to die, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Yes, but NY's Governor Cuomo seems to be onboard with this too.

Really? From what I've seen he's doing all he can in the face of fierce obstruction from the federal government. Am I missing something here?

Yeah, he's had battles with Trump but said yesterday that it was financially unviable to keep the city shutdown forever. He's mulling over some options. It is NYC , after all.

Here in Perú it's getting better.

We were the first country to isolate people in their homes since 9 days ago

5 Minutes ago the President informed and we have good news.

  1. We've been advancing an average of 30 to 50 cases a day.
  2. Yesterday we had 25 more cases
  3. Today we have 15 cases more, the curve is starting to get flat.
  4. We have 7 deaths:
    1. 4 Cases came already sick from from Spain and were isolated as soon as they came.
    2. 1 Case came from Canada.
    3. 1 is a native case who nobody can explain (The first death).
    4. 1 Is an irresponsibility of the system, the guy came from Spain and was sent to his house after taking the sample, he called a friend who is a doctor and told him he couldn't breathe, the doctor called Minsa (Health Ministry) and no answer, after two days his test was found an de he was positive. The doctor hired am ambulance, but the guy didn't answered, they broke the door and the guy was dead.
Most of the cases are in Lima (10 million people, almost 2 million without water), 340 infected

Mapa-Peru-1

But since yesterday the cases are slowing in Lima and started to appear in the north close to the frontier with Ecuador, country in an emergency, they have half the population of Perú and already 1049 positive cases and 27 deaths, people are crossing the frontier to buy and sell their products by our long frontier not guarded.

We also have a huge Venezuelan immigration who cross by feet in points were there is no police and are found in the three frontier departments

Mapa-Peru-1

We have a curfew at 8 PM until Sunday.

Luckily the frontiers were closed early and the isolation started with only 6 cases.

The frontiers and the airports are closed for at least 2 more months.

PS: I had a funny situation.

I have asthma, so I normally cough, specially in spring and autumn, so I went to the department store and had a cough.

People ran and a policeman took me to the hospital a block away, luckily they were testing in the garden under a tent to avoid people in closed rooms.

The doctor took the temperature of 37 with the thermal scanner (not fever, but close) so they made me buy a thermometer and had  37 oral which is normal, still he was starting to order mandatory isolation but he saw my cigarettes and showed him my albuterol spray and laughed, he told me I am stupid to smoke with asthma (I know that) injected me with the pneumococcal vaccine and told the police to take  me back to the market (preferred to walk instead of entering the patrol with two unprotected cops), because it wasn't dry cough and I had no risk because I told him I didn't had any contact with foreigners or people infected and had no fever and the temperature in street was 30 degrees C°.

The funny thing s that the vaccine caused me fever for 24 hours and made me paranoiac, but since a week ago everything is normal, still had to call the 113 and inform.

The paranoia is huge here.

Hi Ivan
I have many friends in Peru and they tell me similar to what you report, things seem to be leveling out. My family in Honduras are reporting similar. Police investigating anybody on the street at night and making them go home or escorting them home, military is also on the prowl, but that is pretty normal for Honduras.

My wife has asthma also but is doing good, she is vigilant about washing hands and wiping down her desk daily. Good thing is she has never been a smoker Smile.

Take care, cuidate!

Trump definitely seems to care more about the economy and big business and protecting them than saving human lives.

The numbers of the economy are all red flags that we're heading towards a depression, especially if it lasts for longer than a few months. He doesn't want to be remembered as the second coming of Herbert Hoover!

For one thing I doubt he even knows who HH was. Other than that I seriously doubt he cares. You act as though he's a normal person. Trust me. He's not. Besides he's already remembered for other things including being the third president to be impeached.

You're thinking he's a lot dumber than he is. One of my economics recommenders is friends with one of his chief economics advisors and the President listens a lot to what he has to say.

Report from Czech Republic.

*1289 cases
* 8 recovered
* 2 dead (one of them 95 year old)

We have partial quarantine, closed borders. Compulsory wearing of face masks when in public. Ban on gatherings (except family). A lot of unnecessary business closed unfortunately.

I've been working as a policeman since 2014, so it's actually my job to enforce that the rules are being followed. So far, so good. People are kind, pleasant even.

@ King of Loss: I think one of the main problems is that Trump tends to ONLY listen to his economic advisors.

Why does the UK and NYC allow subway riders to be packed like sardines during this?

The “subway” in London (Underground or Tube in our vernacular) is under the control of Transport for London, which is directly answerable to the Mayor of London, a chap by the name of Sadiq Khan.

Khan is one of those politicians who has been urging UK government to adopt extremely strict quarantine measures for a little while now, only just short of flogging miscreants and hurling them in the Thames. It was his idea to reduce the number of trains running on the Underground to a minimal service in order to discourage his citizens from travelling and spreading the virus, and also to look as if “he was doing something”, always a dangerous proposition in most people like that. Of course, from the law of unintended consequences, although pretty much predictable, there are fewer people, travelling, but still in their massed hordes on fewer trains.

The UK government had absolutely nothing to do with that decision. They are, however, culpable for issuing a ban on all commutes to work for jobs that are not essential or cannot be done from home, without specifying precisely what it regards as an essential job. Policy is being made on the hoof, and it was, again, entirely predictable that there is both confusion over what is deemed to be an essential job, and many private sector bosses deeming their work so utterly essential that it forced employees to come to work in sectors such as construction and retail. The decision to run fewer trains and carriages was that of the train operating companies, then still under private control, before being effectively renationalised.

In terms of the essence of your question, why do they allow things to happen, this suggests to me the usual issue of people expecting governments to do something. The expectation that those in charge have some magical powers in order to make things better and to take responsibility when things go wrong (this being a hilarious proposition to anybody versed in political history).

Those in government are human beings the same as the rest of us. They have exactly the same feelings, skills, faults, and stupidity as the rest of us, excepting that most of them have narcissistic tendencies somewhat higher than the average citizen - that is why most of them are there. They do not really have much of a clue how to run a country. Neither, in fact, do most of their officials have much of an idea how to run their departments. It is the reason why this modern childish idea, mainly fostered by the media, that somebody must do something is inherently dangerous, and the concept of individual responsibility diminishing equally so.

I wonder what would happen if companies were given the responsibility of declaring themselves essential or not, and if they think they are, they would be held accountable (no pun intended) for their decision. Why should individual employees be burdened with the responsibility of deciding that?

There isn't and I am indeed working from home , I just was not sure what was regarded as 'essential'. So many things are linked . People need to be paid. If my home computer broke for any reason I won't be able to replace it. Then what do I do?

Just about to “go” to work, but examining each of your sentences:

Neither is anybody else

Yes, they are

Yes, they do

No, you wouldn’t

You’d be f**ked

Police in the UK had to break up a BBQ yesterday (eventually by kicking over the actual bbq as people wouldn't take any notice of them). What is wrong with these idiots?

My mistake. Cuomo was referring to unaffected areas in upstate NY, which makes more sense as NYC is the nation's leading C-19 "hot zone". (Lucky me. Confused)
