And anyway, anybody who rates Moving pictures > Hemispheres is a bovine spongiform polyp on satans anus...

Ha! And someone who doesn't rate Signals (*) highly, at least in their Top Ten Rush album list, is a crusty relic whose lunar underside has mossed over and has to be groomed by leprechauns. *It only has Geddy's best recorded bass tone and some of his best lines, after all. AND some of their best songs. AND fantastic drumming. (Etc.) |

Well let's examine this for a moment, You said if I could only save 5 albums. I said Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves & Power windows which leave room for two more. Hemispheres would defiantly be one of the two so does that still make me a "bovine spongiform polyp on satans anus" Just wanted to see if I'm allowed to keep the title? |

I'm the exception to this weird "pop" description of Rush in the 90s albums, which is fine its just a descriptor that happens in the prog world, if its not prog its pop.
I enjoy all those post Signals albums because of the nature of their influence at that time....reggae, synth/electronic sadly what always suffers is the guitar player. Both Geddy and Neil described very detailed why the music became what it was...The Police influence and sound that was so dominating during that time. Plus how Rush described the songs as mini stories that should stand on their own, not needing 20min to do that. Also Neil as a writer/lyricist becoming more mature and the desire to write about priests and Greek Gods basically going to zero. I look at each album standing on their own rather than linked in some way like some of the earlier releases, similar themes. Of course a couple not having strong legs like TFE and RTB. I think there is a common agreement that we as prog fans look at up to Perm Waves as the pivotal years for Rush, but not me.

^ I think some of the prog puritans here think if the album doesn't have a 10 minute plus song it's not a real prog album. I don't subscribe to that view.

So then why do all the prog puritans think the Beatles are prog?? Which is clearly as hell....

I don't know about prog puritans, but what the Beatles were doing starting with Revolver (some will say even Rubber Soul) and finishing with Abbey Road was unique and important to what will be coming later, prog or not. Whether you like them or not, they were important and influential.

There can be no doubt that Rush, at virtually the same time as genesis, decided to create AOR type pop, rather than be seen as prog rock dinosaurs....their choice to ditch the prog purist fan base for a whole lot more "dance round yer handbags" fans...Compare, IQ debut album v Signals....or Abacab...both not even prog-related in my crazy world of the longer track monsters...

I would love to know the names of these AOR Rush pop songs. They became less typical prog rock at some point and more aor rock("mainstream rock" if you like)but in no way were they doing anything as commercial or as pop oriented as Genesis.

Just curious, what is the meaning of "dance round yer handbags"? I am not familiar with it. Is it a quote from something in particular?

I like IQ, but let's be honest, Tales from the Lush Attic, just like Script for a Jester's Tear, sounds more derivative than a silk pajama-wearing fogey who dubs himself "Lou Pepler."

There were also other factors: They were older, more mature, and increasingly interested in getting to the point (Genesis as well); They'd lost Terry Brown; They had simply evolved as a band and a record like Hemispheres was long in the past. |

In music, POP = songs played on the radio all the time, Grammy nominations/awards, Rolling Stone loves you, RnRHoF votes u in on initial eligibility, u perform on SNL........
The entire music world knows AOR = Boston, Journey, Aerosmith, Foreigner, Toto, Queen..... So yea.....Rush is both of those, I'm such a doosh...

It's so hilarious that every PA thread will eventually become a debate about the definition of prog. Rush made concessions to the changes in music fashion that no one was immune to. Even the likes of Bob Fripp , David Bowie , Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett got into line. The difference is that some made it an interesting journey while some just melted into the background. Essentially Rush were a hard rock band that were open to a lot of influences. They didn't invent prog rock but rather added a heavier element to it that seemed to be perfect for the time.
