Their discography is too large for me to say "I'm into them", but the few albums I have I like, and have even seen them live (with Snakefinger).

Cool. I have the first nine albums. Eskimo was the first The Residents album that I really liked. Then I got and really liked Not Available, then Duck Stab / Buster & Glen, then Mark of the Mole etc. My first album by the band was The Third Reich 'n Roll, which I found interesting, but I wouldn't have called myself a fan.

It was late one night during the early '80s when the local radio station played "Edweena", which impressed me so much that I had to have it. But I was disappointed when the DJ said the album was not available. About a year or two later, I saw the album at a record store, discovering that what the DJ said was actually the name of the album.

I got the Diskomo/Goosebump 12" single at around the same time. While I liked Diskomo, I hated Goosebump with a passion.

Then I discovered the music of Snakefinger. which I found to be weird, but not as extremely so as The Residents.

In 1986, I saw The Residents with Snakefinger as part of their 13th anniversary tour. Wanting to recapture that experience, I got the album of the Tokyo version of the tour.

Years later, I got Commercial Album on CD, and most recently not long ago, I got Duck Stab.

Recently, I listened to The Ghost Of Hope, but as much as I appreciated the concept, the vocals seem too normal compared to what I was used to hearing from them.

Hating Goosebump with a passion, I didn't listen to it again for about 20 years, when it suddenly clicked with me. It still sounds pretty terrible, but there is something about it that now appeals to me.

For me, The Residents is a group to be enjoyed on their own terms, rather than the way one might enjoy Yes or Genesis or someone like that.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I agree!  I went with Starcastle, as I knew the guys in the band when I was in university at Champaign, IL.  They were an amazingly tight band live....they could play anything!  Elton John, Rolling Stones, their own stuff etc.

I don't know much about Carmen, but Ford Theatre are more psychedelic than progressive. I think you'll like them.

I've only heard Kansas from this list apart from one Starcastle song which I never heard again. Guess I need to do a lot of investigation! No vote this time

Same here. I've only listened to five albums recently by Kansas and five albums by Spirit in the poll, and I've listened to the odd one or two other albums in the poll, but that was such a long time ago that I barely remember them now. It might be time to give them another listen. Smile

Definitely Kansas, but I do love the Dregs.

Funny that RTF is in there but not Mahavishnu.

Of course I can be wrong, but what Iīve read about American prog (and that little Iīve heard) we havenīt missed anything when not listening it that much. Kansas is good, but not really my big favorites. I like Spirit 12 dreams album really much, but their other albums are enjoyable much more other than prog reasons. I recommend you to listen Dixie Dregs What If-album, itīs quite good! Also Utopiaīs first is great, but other albums Iīve heard from them are quite mediocre (Another Live is Ok, havenīt ever heard Ra, maybe I listen it someday).

But Mahavishnu was a multinational ensemble whose leader and only constant member was an Englishman.

I vote for Kansas since Carmen is a UK-based band.
