 Topic: Is XTC Still a Group?

After all of these years and with the gradual resignation of various
members of the band we are left with Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding
which was the absolute core of the band's songwriting. However, with
Mouldings gradual retreat from songwriting duties (he's only
contributed four songs to the last two albums) and indeed, public life,
is there a band left of is it just Andy on his own now?
I'm a huge fan of this great group but I do lie awake in bed, dressed
only in my wife's underwear, thinking about what the future holds for
them.

I,ve never heard that they won't produce something new.  Have you tried their website?

Yeah, the site is always well maintained and new releases from Andy are
always on the way out but I guess that XTC material takes longer to
filter through to us great unwashed.

XTC ... one of my favourite bands. From what I can see, Andy has been doing some collaboration with Blevgad (Orpheus) and Harold Budd (Through the Hill) ... mainly instrumentals

I get the feeling that Colin Moulding 'doesn't want to play' at the
moment. The last interview I saw he stated that he wasn't interested in
releaseing his demos in the same way Partridge has done with the Fuzzy
Warbles series.
That said, I guess no news is nearly always good news with XTC as when
they are silent, the chances are that they are recording things.

What is your favourite XTC album? And when did you discover them?
I knew them from the begiinning and the first album I got was Go2 with the bonus disc Go plus!

I began with English Settlement ... love Andy's acoustic guitar work in Yacht Dance ... but my fave track is probably Jason & The Argonauts ...especially love the bit that goes ... "seems the more I travel ... from the foam to the gravel ...as the nets unravel ... more exotic things I find ..."
yes, Partridge writes really good lyrics. I like Moulding's sense of humour ... like Fruit Nut & Frivolous Tonight in Apple Venus. 
I like Nonsuch & Skylarking very much but also the energy of Drums & Wires & Black Sea ... hey, they're all good!!!

I suppose you'd call them pop music, but very thoughtful and intelligent pop.
They started in the Punk era and their first few albums are quite frenetic, they eventually softened and evolved.

English Settlement...great album....Yach Dance...absolutely wonderful. I think Maani would like to see them in the Archives!

As a kid I always loved their singles, but after getting into heavy metal I never really paid much attention to them. I had 'English Settlement' on tape which I remember as being quite good. I'll have to buy it again.
I did give the 7" of 'Senses working overtime' a spin a few weeks back. I love that song, so quirky, catchy and quintessentially English! A very unique band

Have any of you got the Coat of Many Cupboards Boxset ... what d'you think of it?
I recently discovered a rather saucy hidden track at the beginning of disc 3 of the set ("Shaving brush boogie" ) ... one very pissed Andy talking about ... shaving brushes ...placed in a rather, sensitive place

Okay then, a personal list of album recommendations for XTC:
1. Black Sea - Old School XTC,
very pop/punk with the singles Towers Of London and Generals &
Majors. Lots of big guitars and shouty drumming.
2. The Big Express - A
fantastic mid-period album which begins their journey towards the
idiosyncratic Beatlesque tunes and away from mainstream pop. Probably
their most underrated album IMO.
2. Skylarking - Produced by
Todd Rundgren and spawed the athiest's anthem 'Dear God' that was
a hit in the USA. My Personal Favourite XTC album. 
3. Oranges & Lemons - Another album that sold well in America and produced one of the classic XTC ballads 'Chalkhills & Children'.
4. Apple Venus - The comback
album after a decade of silence (the last album being Nonsuch) which
was a critical hit in the UK and made them (for a time) one of the
hippest bands for 30somethings to be into. A fantastic collection of
semi acoustic material with orchestrated backing. Their first album as
a two piece.
Anyway, that's a short intro to the band for you Blacksword sir.
