"Stay Down", "Shallow Bay", "If Anything" have grown on me a lot. I get goosebumps from the former when the chorus appears with the metal(?) riffs. Tangentially related, but I'd kill for more acoustic work by Mr. Holmes. In fact, I'd love see he and Markus Steffen collaborate on a song that primarily features their combined acoustic goodness.

Neil Durant has brought a lot to the party certainly especially on the programming side and he is a very accomplished player. Saw him with his jazz rock combo Sphere3 at a festival gig in Basingstoke about 15+ years ago . TFK were the headliners!

I gave it my undivided attention last night and it's quality music from the very start. Little bits of it that seemed bland have blended onto the whole superbly. Great CD. Even tbe slower sort of ballad is very good. Somebody said it was like 80's genesis - i'm not hearing that at all....definately IQ have decided that they should reinforce their place in the modern symph prog renaissance...as the number one act... |

^I agree about the length. If they had only released the second disc by itself, it might be my #1 pick of the year.

I've spent quite a bit of time on this album, still a very solid album.........It's too long?? They make another genre of music called pop rock with songs that max out at about 3min.
It's too long.....sheesh.

I don't think an album should have 3 epics... except tales from topographic oceans But seriously, albums rarely hold my attention for 2 hours. For me resistance is definitely a two-sitting album. |

I guess I am the exception to this strange rule......I have been spinning records since about 11am PST today. I sit and listen and absorb it all in, IQ was one of many records I listened to today. Currently spinning TAAB, Side II....Tales might be next! More epics please!!

Yeah sometimes long albums can be a bit draining so double LPs like the lamb and wall are generally reserved for two separate listening occasions for me. Snow Live is always a marathon though.

Alright so over the months Road of Bones has become one of my favorite albums ever. So I've really tried with this one, I've come back to it several several times expecting it to click and my final verdict on it is that I just don't like it. Its too long, there's too much ambient downtime, everything sounds very samey and there's nothing about it that tops anything off road of bones in my opinion.
I wish the reviews reflected the general consensus in this thread. 2 stars. Edited by dougmcauliffe - February 09 2020 at 22:00 |

So the rating dropped to 4.26 and i still think it's too high for this album. Road of Bones has 4.25. I also find it more interesting and more inspired than the new one. |

their debut and Ever are much better if you ask me (than both the Wake and the new one. )

The Wake, the debut and Frequency are the only ones I listen to (and own) from the group. I gave away the others I had (believe it was Ever, Subterranea and Dark Matter) in exchange for some IDM albums that my friend didn’t listen to
It’s brilliant when you can make other peeps cheerful with music that didn’t tickle your own fancy. |

in my opinion, Road of Bones is a vastly superior album. I find the first cd of the new one to be a chore, and my rating is dropping to 3. I will get round to a review before the end of the year 😕

The production also sounds very lifeless, road of bones is just better in every sense of the word. Hard to believe they missed the mark this bad.

I will have to revisit. ROB. However it did not grab me like the latest CD...I still think that the latest is the best in terms of length and consistency...but an opinion that seems to be seen as contraversial....we shall see!

I love Resistance, there are some absolutely stellar tracks on it in my opinion, but Road Of Bones is still my favourite IQ release. Actually, to me both are quite similar in many ways, certainly I get a sense of the same overall atmosphere from both, which has been a trend with IQ for the past decade. I guess if you wanted to be critical you could say perhaps the first CD bogs down a little after track 2, but frankly I find with most IQ releases (heck with most releases of any artist), that not every track can be of the same standard. |
