I live in Australia, and boy oh boy...if you think prog is unknown in other places, it's non-existent here.
The closest I've come to hearing prog here, is like...Phil Collins solo sh*t lol.

Can I please live somewhere else?

My kids are into a japanese cartoon with english subtitles - JoJo's bizarre adventures - every episode ends with the into of Yes Roundabout and the characters are all named after rock and prog.
there's a Speedwagon, Dio, King Crimson, Ton (sp) Petty and more....
it's kinda violent and well, bizarre .

I know the radio isn't really unexpected but I heard "thick as a brick" part one today on an independent college radio station. I'm not talking about the radio edit either but the whole first twenty minutes. I didn't actually catch all of it but I did catch it later on so I know it was the whole first part. It was cool to hear that on my car's radio. That same section is on the second JT greatest hits album if I'm not mistaken.

Back in the late 1970's the Phoenix, Arizona PBS affiliate would sign off air with no, not the Star Spangled Banner but Mudmen from Floyd's Obscured By Clouds.
Perhaps finding the happy medium is harder than we know.

Ah, college radio. Back in 1978, a friend told me I could hook up my TV cable connection to my receiver to get the local college radio station over at San Diego State University. This I did, and I was soon hearing the standard college fare over the airwaves. Well, Steve Hackett's second album Please Don't Touch had just been released, and I was interested in seeing if the S.D.S.U. station would play it. I called them up, and a very bored sounding disc jockey said he'd look through the recent arrivals for the album. Sure enough, one half hour later the first side of the album was played in its entirety, and it was a real treat for a lazy spring afternoon.

I was really amazed and nearly choked with my beer and even asked a waiter if he knows what's the music just playing in the bar........ Beer

Last Friday night, just arrived in Italy.
We’re staying in a tiny little hotel near Venice, maybe 6 or 7 rooms. In their restaurant for dinner, and the first song they play is “After the ordeal” from “Selling England”. Must have been on a Genesis kick, because it was followed by “Heathaze” from “Duke”, then “Horizons”. Not what I expected in a little Italian restaurant in 2019. They seemed pretty obscure choices, even if Genesis were popular in Italy 40 years ago.
It went a bit downhill from there with Wham’s “Careless Whisper”, but still made my day.

Some years ago in a hotel in Chester (UK), during the breakfast they played the whole B side of Jon Anderson's Song Of Seven. Two years ago I was almost unable to exit a Marloboro dress shop in a McArthur-Glenn outlet near Rome. They played the whole CD2 of Pink Floyd's Pulse.

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

A few weeks ago they had Shine on you Crazy Diamond on Sam's Club, which was beginning just as I entered the store, and was done (the first part) when I was leaving. I just got to hear that they were continuing with the beginning of Dark Side, so I guess they had a Pink Floyd list going on. Sadly, I went again last weekend, and they had Reggaeton this time

Walking in the local park today I'm pretty sure I saw a guy walking past me wearing a King's X t shirt. Not the most obscure band but not the most well known either. I don't think they ever even had a gold album. They are on this site so at the very least they are prog related. The only other kind of obscure band I have seen in public(not at a concert) was the band Crack the Sky(both times at some sort of outdoor town event(different ones though).

I was in Guitar Center two days ago, and Yes' version of America was playing. Nothing remotely proggy after that...

My wife watches ice skating. Tonight she's watching the 2019 Skate-America event in Las Vegas, and I couldn't believe it when I heard it.

Last weekend I saw a young woman at my local nature center wearing a Yes t shirt. It turns out her boyfriend who is in a band(but not a prog band)is a big fan. It's good to know that some younger folks these days are into good music.
