I've used all 25 options, so I'm hoping I haven't missed any major Symphonic Metal Bands out of the poll. Smile

You did a pretty good job.  I could quibble that Evanescence is Goth Metal rather than Symphonic Metal, but that's pretty minor.

Anyway, I threw out the first vote:  Within Temptation, although there's a few that are close behind, especially Nightwish.

I voted for Within Temptation too, so they've got off to a flying start. I was in two minds whether to include Evanescence with them being a borderline Symphonic Metal band, but they're so popular that I decided to play safe by including them in the poll anyway. Smile

Ayreon because the music isn't 100% metal all the time and the vocals are usually really good.

Ayreon is a great choice...
.... but a lot of those groups aren't 100% metal all the time and a lot of those groups have truly superior vocals (that's one of the things that makes this genre so great). The aforementioned Tarja, for instance, easily has the finest set of pipes on that, or just about any other. List.

I agree. I prefer Tarja Turunen's solo albums to the current line-up of Nightwish. In my opinion, Nightwish have never been as good since Tarja was fired from the band.

I think I may own an album by Ayreon but that's about it. DT and Maiden are enough for me when It comes to metal of any kind. Prog was always a haven from this sort of thing as far as I'm concerned.

neither should be in the list, but I guess SX could be here because of the initial Yngwie influence.

By "DT" I presume you mean Dream Theater. There's only space for 25 bands in the poll so I had to draw the line somewhere and I've never considered Dream Theater to be a Symphonic Metal band. To me, they've always been a Progressive Metal band. Smile

Rhapsody is the bestest symphonic one among them.

Therion gives the atmosphere of the ancient civilizations with magical quality on some of their albums.

Nightwish's some albums are very emotional and heartwarming and they arouse deep feelings.

I've listened to a couple of Visions of Atlantis albums. They are very authentic.

Ayreon is also a unique band, some of their works are sweet.

Yet, I'll go with Symphony X. They're the best (for me).

I'll stop here, even though I know most of the bands put here. (Not sure if I've even heard Aesma Daeva though.)

I thought I would be the same when Tarja left.   But I think Floor Jansen is doing a right admirable job. Nobody has Tarja's pipes, but Floor does quite well.  I still dig Nightwish and have very much enjoyed their more recent releases.

I'm a huge fan of early Within Temptation, Sharon is a vocal godess (and looks like one).

I wish they would go back to their beginnings though.

A crapshoot between Sirenia and Edenbridge. Sirenia has more variety, but they lost the plot for a few albums in the mid aughts until Perils of the Deep Blue brought them back. Edenbridge is more consistent, and I love Sabine's elegant voice...so I'll go with them.

If you like Edenbridge, you might want to take a look at my Symphonic Metal Heaven blog. Smile

The Silent Force is clearly with Within Temptation in this poll as they're currently leading by two clear votes. Thumbs Up

If you'd had asked me 15 years ago, my answer would have been Therion without a doubt, but they've been treading water ever since Gothic... Epica are by some way the most imaginative and consistent these days, so my vote goes to them. It's worth pointing out that Sirenia's last couple of albums have been very strong however....
