A recent review on here suggested that Ozric Tentacles have either temporarily disbanded or gone on indefinite hiatus. Their last album was in 2015 so it's been a while. Also, there doesn't seem to be anything mentioned on their website. Ed Wynne just put out a new album so that's good news but does anyone know what has happened to the band?

I saw in a recent review of the new EW album that Ed and Brandy are no longer together so that has probably put a damper on things.

Yes, that review was actually the inspiration for this thread. I never heard that before and there isn't any information on their website. I'm not saying it's not true but I would be curious as to where the reviewer read that.

There was Ed's `Shimmer into Nature' solo album from the start of the year, which essentially is exactly the same as several recent Ozrics albums, but is definitely a lot `rockier' due to his guitar playing dominating a lot more again...and nice that it only runs a fairly typical vinyl length of about 45 punchier minutes or so.

Pretty sure it's meant to be added to the site under his own listing, although I'm not sure if that's happened already or not.

I am not sure that Brandy was as good as she thinks she was, in the sense that she did not push Ed enough to make his work harder/easier to respond to ... I think it was too much of a demand on him to make it happen. The fact they separated, though, is a bit tough and very harsh, for both of them, I'm sure ... it makes it very difficult for Ed to tour by himself, since the band is the recognition, not exactly his name, and ... I don't know ... for my tastes both bass players (Brandy and Zia) were nice and steady I think, but I'm not sure they added to the music as much.

I think that the earlier touch of "psychedelia" was also missing too much, and it made the music based on the riffs and the moment that Ed could light it up, and this hurt the band ... I commented one time that I thought that the "Wynne Family Band" was not as strong and (specially) visionary, as it had been since John was with them ... and he appears to have been someone that injected a lot of touches that helped the music flourish ... something that the rest of the band members (after him) were not able to do, it seems, even if at least one or two albums were really good and fun to listen to. Already, it missed the "trip" element that it had before, replaced by the "riff" element.

It is/was a very nice band ... I do not wish on anyone that their relationships fall apart, but sometimes it has to happen for folks to get away from their slight complacency and come alive creatively ... I think that the stuff that Ed wanted to do (and DID on his solo) was likely a bit too adventurous and scary for Brandy to handle it ... but it is possible that she just said no, and that caused a problem ... you have to try, maybe, to see if it works, and if it doesn't, at least you know how much more you gotta learn ... I have the feeling that Brandy was not as advanced of a player to even be in the shoes that she fit, and it may be that Ed was the one teaching her?

^ I've seen them live in 2016 (now I'm especially glad I did) and she has the chops to play the old songs but her own compositions sound lazy in comparison. She practically just played the 5th/4th strings on the new ones.

The sad side of all this, for me, is that it just about makes her musical career come, more than likely, to an abrupt end ... specially when/if she is in dire need of some serious learning at this stage in her life, which is really difficult, if you do not have a solid background to rely on ... hopefully, she can get better and find herself some work ... but I do not think her name will attract as many folks to a show as "Ozric Tentacles" can.

Ed's solo album shows there is still a lot in the tank from him, and my take is that if he gets himself a half way decent band, of great players, instead of new players, that it might create an infusion for the band ... that is sorely missed from the early days.

In general, though, bands can not and do not re-regurgitate very well, so expecting this to happen to the Oz ... might be asking too much ... but at least we know we should/might get another album or two, before they slip into nowhere land, only remembered in their home town!

I got interested in band a while ago and pretty much raided their discography.  I got a DVD of them in concert as well/  Maybe after all that high powered music they fizzled out?  They are the quintessential work out music for me if I were actually doing that right now.  From the DVD they are also aficionados of smoking a certain plant...
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

When I last saw them here in Portland, and it was many years ago, both Ed and Brandi were turning down spliffs as they stood outside on the side with the fans, and it was like no one knew them, or bothered them, although some folks said hi and had a handshake ... it's strange for me, to think of this as "stoned" music, when for me it isn't ... it's just really nice stuff ... the days of "stoned" music kinda died with the flowers in your hair thing for me, and the stupidity and insanity that invaded California and specially SF, and pretty much destroyed things ... and even when I saw PF in 1974 (DSOTM) and then the next concert a few years later, all the way to THE WALL, the cloud of smoke was so thick, that even Roger complained about it like crazy ... and no one heard it ... and it was in that moment, that I wondered what we had for fans ... morons, or lemmings or something else ... the music, the show and its technical elements were getting so difficult for PF to be ripped ... and it was so hard that they no longer free formed and had moments where they could just improvised for fun! it made obvious sense, that those folks would be very much more careful about getting stoned, than the audience for many of these shows ... which for me was the wrong audience, but PF had already decided to go for the money!

The OZ, for me, is just a nice band ... a very nice band ... and seeing it fall apart, and bust a marriage with it ... is even sadder for my imagination ... it just doesn't add up for me!

This may not sound right, but I hope that things work out for all of them ... and hopefully things will be better than ever ... (we can always hope!)

Pretty reticent to get the new album from Ed since it was described in a review as laid back or some similar adjective.  I like it best when they (he) ramp it up. Any thoughts along those lines?

Saw Ed playing with various of the old Ozrics band members at Kozfest in Devon a couple of summers ago, in various bands over the weekend which culminated in the nearest thing to an Ozrics re-union that I could imagine.. everyone seemed to be having fun and there was a lot of good vibes! Since then, Ed's recorded the Shimmer lp and has supported Gong and is now touring it (am seeing him in Exeter in April) and I was under the impression that something new from the Ozrics stable might be coming later this year??

well I hope the Ozrics continue. Sorry to hear about the family situation. Perhaps it was exacerbated by the fire that burned their studio down (iirc)?

I guess tha'ts their business.

Hi,

Strange ... but interesting all the same ... isn't Silas, the son from Ed and Brandy?

Times change and things move along and become something else ... maybe Ed needed some space that he was missing, and finally had to go at it differently.

Silas, when I saw him here with them, was probably too young to be doing a good job on stage, and my feeling was that some of the stuff was pre-recorded ... and he only had to bring it up and sync it. That's my thought ... but by now, some 3 or 4 years later, I would think that he has gotten better and knows his synths better to be able to do something or other and perhaps even give Ed a kick or two.

I really hope that they fix things ... and that the music proliferates even more and further ... hard to see it coming, but ... we can always hope!
