But sometimes people will be far more knowledgable than you on a certain topic. I will accept the word of my doctor if he tells me I have a certain illness without forcing him to produce evidence that it's definitely true.

I was talking about generalisation in general. Maybe Ian McKellan is right, but it hasen't been remotly proven, so don't make a statement you can't proof. People will quote you if they think you're a reliable source, giving it more value than it actually has. The quote will go full-circle and end up with you again, and you think, I already said so myself, so it probably is true if they say it also.

In the end you will think it's common knowledge, but it isn't. It's people parroting each other, without verifying the facts.

But ultimately,it doesn't matter,does it? Because nothing in life really does. I hate the music of John Cougar Mellencamp more than can be expressed in any vocabulary in this or any other universe,but he has an album title I have always thought was brilliant: "Nothing Matters,And What If It Did?" Certainly sums up my view of life!

Not true. The arts in general have always had a much larger share of people who are OPENLY gay.

Here in the UK there is plenty of homophobia, but being open about your sexuality does no damage to a career in music or the arts - witness Elton John, George Michael, David Hockney and Ian McKellen, all of whom are generally regarded as national treasures. Elton John is a well established royal favourite, and Ian McKellen has a knighthood.

If you really think that this is a bad thing, look up Alan Turing online and read about what he achieved and the shameful events which led to his death.

You could also read the story of Justin Fashanu, a gifted football player.

By the way, you've all missed Rob Halford of Judas Priest - bet that one shocked you!

As a matter of history, it is true that there has been more "open" homosexuality in the arts than in most other areas of endeavor.  For example, let's start with the Renaissance artists like Michelangelo, Rubens, Rafaelo et al, most of whom were openly either gay or bi-sexual.  Didn't affect their ability to create great art, did it?  And there were many - many - artists, musicians and other "arts"-related gays throughout the 1700s and 1800s, though some were "closeted."

As for the "recent past," even before "rock and roll" there was Liberace, one of the most beloved performers in the history of music.  And let's not forget that the "granddaddy" of rock and roll - Little Richard - was also gay.

If we go into the "film" category, here we started with a great deal of "closeted" gay and bi-sexual actors (and others) who eventually "came out."  Ironically, it was the gay actresses who had less problem with openness - Marlene Dietreich, Talullah Bankhead, et al.  Rock Hudson's sexual orientation was only discovered when he died of AIDS.  That was the event that caused almost all the other gay actors and actresses to "come out of the closet."

Finally, if we consider the art of dance, there are few male ballet dancers - and, today, modern and jazz dancers and choreographers - who are not gay or bi.  Indeed, ballet (and now modern dance) is essentially a gay "stronghold."

One need only review the history of the arts to see the truth of just how influential gay and bi-sexual men (and some women) were in their respective fields.

Actually if we're talking percentage... I live in NYC... I find more opening gay men in the travel industry and fashion and beauty.. than I do in the arts.  I know quite a few gay actors and dancers.. but I know 4 times many straight ones... I can't say that about my hotel/airline reps, male fashion designers or my hair dressers...

Have I ever said I was hostile to gay people?! I really take offence at that,and I'm being serious. Where do you get that from my completely innocent statement? Only idiots are hostile to gays,only religious fundamentalists and Ku Klux Klan members,and I will not be lumped in with those guys,thank you very much! I also think how Alan Turing was treated was disgraceful and also how all gay people have been treated though the ages in general has been appaling, and it's impossible to have any other view and still be considered a civilized being. DON'T ASSUME THINGS ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE!
