It would be wise to finish your baccalaureate in arts before pressing the 'play' button though.

^ yep, i get the "they got all snooty" effect for some listeners. I seriously wouldn't want them to do another album like this but one was great. That's what i love about Tull. They never really repeated at least after Aqualung.

and yes, a fantastically original body of work even if they became more conservative with 'A Crest of a Knave' onward...but that's totally comprehensible.

Mine should arrive in a short time (next week probably) but I'll wait the first snow before unwrapping.

Shouldn't be very long now, darlings.

I made a double album. From the original I swapped Orion with the long version. I used the 6 known songs kelpie, stitch, cross, blues, broad, king and also added 2 new instrumentals. Both quality
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

BTW in case you missed it, there was a video released of the outrageous live shows that resulted from this prog behemoth. Just as overambitious and clearly a dent in the wallet LOL

I can't emphasize enough that this album is the highest of the high arts and needs a lot of conditioning to understand.

Check out his vid

Another great review from you. I don't agree but it was a pleasure to read. I'm waiting for SWilson to do a remix on the A album. I think the original muddy mix (an unintentional wall of sound) and shrill mastering had a lot to do with album being so panned. After all, Eddie Jobson is God. ;)

What do you guys think about A Passion Play? I've listened to it once and it really bored me. Aside, Thick As A Brick is in my top 3 of Prog albums.
So should I listen to it again?

I would. I've always liked it, but I understand is not an easy listning. However, it is quite deep in compositional skills, and it gradually grows on you. Thick as a Brick is also one of my favorite pieces os music, probably the top one.

It'll go over your head the first time. It's one of those top notch complex prog albums and requires many, many listens to sink in. Took me a long time to appreciate it as a 5 star album. There's so much to digest. I compare albums like A Passion Play as an album to math classes.  You won't understand calculus until you master algebra. Thick As A Brick is a less complex album built on variations of a few themes. A Passion Play opens the floodgates and delivers a deluge of ideas that don't repeat. It's one of those many don't have the patience to decode.

You should only listen to it again if you have insomnia. That's all the album is good for.

APP is a grower. It has a strange sound unique to it which may take a while to get used to. It is Tull's most dense album both musically and lyrically. I recommend patience with it but only if it catches your fancy in some way. Never try to like something others say you should like if you don't, but some music deserves more than one or even two listens. This is one of those cases. Part of the prog experience is trying out music new to you. Sometimes it will grab you, sometimes not. This one requires attention to the lyrics.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

Sad that you think so ... it is, by very far, one of the most intelligent and expressive things ever ... but, then, you probably don't even know what a "passion play" is and its history for hundreds of years ... in order to even come close to appreciate what Ian and his band did, which is phenomenal!

This is the case where a little knowledge and intelligence really makes a difference. You might even go read the other thread where DE and others clarify the whole thing for you ...
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

You kind of need to be in a special mood to actually go through, but yes I think THICK is easily enticing.
