I have two five star albums through September (actually earlier): The Flying Luttenbachers' Shattered Dimension and Elephant9's Psychedelic Backfire Vol. 1. With several more releases coming out soon/soonish that may push it to three or more. Can't say this has been the case with the past five + years. What other years of late did have was decent depth. I won't know how all that stacks up until I compile a list at the end of the year, but still...if I do get up to three five stars for the year, that will be the first time for me since 2010, which would be hard for me to say it's a lesser year, regardless.

I do have an extended list of great releases this year and actually have to do some extra listens to determine which ones are going to be on my final list of highlights for the year. I think it's been a really good year seeing a lot of minor bands really shine, and some great comebacks from others. But I have also listened to a lot more new releases this year than I have for a very long time. There is really a lot of great stuff released this year, and a lot of it is from artists you don't hear about often.
So, here are the ones that I think are all great contenders so far, for the final list: Thank You Scientist IZZ The Aristocrats Lost Crowns ni Emmit Elvin Kayo Dot Cheeto's Magazine Mono Devin Townsend Karfagen The Wrong Object Helium Horse Fly The Mercury Tree On the Raw Monkey3 Consider the Source 3rd Ear Experience Samanovo Zbozi Umpfel Felix Martin Pyramidial Karakorum oG Musique Jambinai The Pneumatic Transit Spiral Steve Unruh Melodramus Dizzy Mystics Cabinets of Curiosity North Sea Radio Eclectic Maybe Band ...and I still have a lot more that I haven't heard yet and I have pretty much reviewed a new release every day with the exception of only a few days. I have to disagree with OP, I think this year has been abysmal compared to all of the previous years of this decade. I have not been as committed to hearing everything that is released, but I've heard a few. The only albums that have really excited me for either their fresh contribution to progressive rock (LOOMINGS Hey, Weirdo!, EX CANIX Shaman, ROBERT JAN STIPS - SUPERSISTER PROJECKT 2019 Restis Repus, and OG MUSIQUEWater Birds) or simple due to their excellence (releases by IAMTHEMORNING, THANK YOU SCIENTIST, ARNAUD BUKWALD, DEVIN TOWNSEND, JORDSJﾘ, MONO, THE PSYCHEDELIC ENSEMBLE, MODERN-ROCK ENSEMBLE, UNITED PROGRESSIVE FRATERNITY Planetary Overload, Part 1 - Loss, THE APPLESEED CAST The Fleeting Light of Impermanence). Even so, very few of these are earning five stars from me. What's up with prog music???

For me, it's definitely one of their best albums. I'm into metal, so I'm not too concerned about the growls in earlier albums, but I think this album is a step above most of their albums.

No mention of Steve Hackett's Edge Of Light? This is his best album since To Watch The Storms imo. I also love the In Continuum album. This features Hackett and also has a similar epic approach. Other than those I've also been impressed with the Magic Pie and This Winter Machine's albums. BBT are certainly one of my favourite bands but I can't quite get excited by the recent albums for some reason. They had such a brilliant run from The Underfall Yard to The Second Brightest Star that something had to give eventually. The Grand Tour is still decent effort though.
