Hi Everybody. Just wanted to let you know about a book I've written on Hawkwind and the 1970s, due to be published in November. It's a very deep dive into the band's music of that period, plus lots on Hawkwind's connection with the various music, underground and science fiction subcultures of the time. Includes lots of interviews and unseen pics.
Along with the paperback edition, there's going to be a Special Edition which will include an extra book of interviews and a couple of other goodies. It will be limited to 500 copies and pre-orders for it go live next Thursday (yes, August 29, 50 years to the day that Group X played their first gig) at www.strangeattractor.co.uk Here's the official announcement, but let me know if you have any questions. Oh, and please feel free to share and tell any Hawkfans you know who aren't online Thanks. HAWKWIND: DAYS OF THE UNDERGROUND – RADICAL ESCAPISM IN THE AGE OF PARANOIA Joe Banks 500 pages (approx.), heavily illustrated in colour and b&w To be published November 2019 The limited SPECIAL EDITION of this book will be available to pre-order from THURSDAY 29 AUGUST at the Strange Attractor website – www.strangeattractor.co.uk Avatars of the underground, figureheads of the free festival scene, and heralds of punk, Hawkwind were one of the bands that defined the 1970s. At the height of their artistic and commercial powers, Hawkwind channelled and amplified the era’s psychic tenor via a science fiction sensibility, mind-blowing visuals, and their unique brand of deep space psychedelia. As well as being an in-depth primer to the music of their classic years, Days Of The Underground explores the ideas and concepts that fuelled Hawkwind during this period, and speaks to the crew that manned the ship. The book’s cover will be illustrated by Hawkwind artist John Coulthart. The Special Edition of the book will be in hardback, limited to 500 copies, signed by the author, and include the following additional items: Sideways Through Time: An Oral History Of Hawkwind In The 1970s – a 200 page companion volume of interviews, including DikMik, Nik Turner, Michael Moorcock, Stacia Blake, Alan Powell, Paul Rudolph, Adrian Shaw, Paul Hayles, Harvey Bainbridge, Andrew Lauder, Doug Smith, Jeff Dexter, Jonathan Smeeton, Renée Berg, Michael Butterworth, and Pamela Townley (Robert Calvert’s second wife) A print of Michael Moorcock & Jim Cawthorn’s ‘Sonic Assassins’ comic strip from Frendz Postcards featuring unseen pictures from the ‘Space Ritual’ photo shoot by Laurie Lewis The price of the Special Edition will be £50 and is only available via Strange Attractor. The standard edition will be in paperback and available throughout the known universe. |

Hi,
I wish I could afford this, but now retired, my income is minimal and I haven't even bought a CD in a year and a half. I would love to read this and review it ... but like everything else in life ... it will be left behind in the ashes and dust of space and time. Tell MM that I wasn't the first to say that, and neither was he!

I totally sympathize, but the price is dictated by manufacture and all the extras. The paperback will probably be around £20...

No excuses or thoughts were necessary ... I understand all that, being the son of someone published in over 36 languages. However, the old days, when the appreciation and attention to a book, and its contents, are long gone ... and yours, won't get a review that it could have gotten, because of your .... money! Best of luck ... I wish I could help more, specially for a band I happen to like since its very first days ... but all my liking and comments ... go for naught ... when you can't even feed one bird out in the street. Best of luck ... your answer is so commercial that it insults the spirit of Hawkwind in my mind!

Err, I was just trying to point out this isn't some nefarious get-rich-quick scheme, but a three & a half year labour of love that unfortunately costs money to produce. Don't think I've ever been accused of being 'commercial' before - feel like I'm coming off my difficult double concept album with a top 20 hit ;-)

That was frankly an insulting and unnecessary comment! I'm not a great Hawkwind fan but I hope the book does well for you, you've obviously put a lot of effort into it.

It was, actually, more realistic than insulting, except that in these days, the idea of doing something for free, and showing up to play in so many events for free ... LIKE HAWKWIND DID ... is simply an idea that can not reach some people's minds at PA. it was a different time and place, plain and simple, and sharing/providing one copy or two or three to help the book sell more and be better evaluated and known ... is obviously not something the author understands or wishes to be a part of. You're entitled to your opinion Chopper, but remember that at one time, no one got paid a whole lot to even play at Hyde Park to show their music and their work ... even King Crimson did it! So telling me that one copy might break his bank, or his life ... is rather pathetic and prudish ... but in the end, it all depends on how much you want to be known and seen ... there are more bands that failed because of that than bands that made it, and didn't deserve it! There are few bands, I can count them in one hand, that I love as much as Hawkwind ... and thinking that I would trash them is not what I wish to do EVER ... but for some folks, they are the only ones, and everyone else be damned and pay them for whatever they do. Sorry, plainly speaking, I can not afford it ... and so, another book goes by the number of books already ignored and left behind ... besides, Chopper, I am not sure that you would even read the book.
