The golden age of prog. One album per year, choose wisely.. 1969 - In the court of the crimson king (King Crimson). Easy choise for me. First prog album of all time? A must listen for every proghead. 1970 - Trespass (Genesis). Maybe the best Genesis album. Stagnation and The Knife are top ten genesis songs of all time. Dusk is the weakest link but it's basically just a "filler". Honorable mentions - Lizard, H to he..., The least we can do... 1971 - Pawn Hearts (Vdgg). Magnum opus, no more words needed. Honorable mentions - Nursery cryme, In the land of grey and pink, Yes album, Fragile. 1972 - Close to the edge (Yes). Ahh, such a hard year for me to choose. Three 10/10 albums coming out in the same year, wow... Honorable mentions - Thick as a brick, Foxtrot. 1973 - Larks' tongues in aspic (King Crimson). Again, a really hard choise for me. I love "Selling" but still had to go with this one as it's so experimental and unique. Honorable mentions - Selling england by the pound, Dark side of the moon. 1974 - The lamb lies down on broadway (Genesis). No way, hardest year for me so far. Six incredible albums in the same year... Best double album of all time in my opinion. White album and The wall also are great but this is a step up from those. Honorable mentions - !!Red!!, Mirage, Relayer, Rock Bottom, Silent corner and... 1975 - Godbluff (Vdgg). Best comeback album, ever. A masterpiece, but still it was a hard choise. Honorable mentions - Wish you were here, Snow goose, Ommadawn, Scheherazade and other... 1976 - Still Life (Vdgg). The second best Still Life in the world :) Honorable mentions - A trick of the tail, Leftoverture. 1977 - Animals (Pink Floyd). Finally a Floyd album on this list. A special one for sure... Honorable mentions - Aja (not prog tho), Going for the one. Edited by Foxprog - June 18 2019 at 15:31 |

1969 - The Moody Blues - To Our Children's Children's Children
ITCOTCK is the obvious choice and the Moodies are only on the edge of prog, but I love TOCCC so much, it's gonna' be #1 for the year. 1970 - Emerson Lake and Palmer - Emerson Lake and Palmer King Crimson again comes in a close second with Lizard 1971 - Aqualung, The Yes Album, or Tarkus? How does one decide? Anybody got a 3-sided coin. Alright, alright, I'm going with Aqualung today, but ask me again tomorrow (or ten minutes from now) and I might give a different answer. 1972 - Yes - Close to the Edge with Tull's Thick as a Brick right on it's heels. 1973 - This is fusion year! Since this site generally includes jazz fusion, I'm going with Billy Cobham - Spectrum, but with Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire right behind. If I had to stay within the bounds of core prog, it'd be Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, with ELP - Brain Salad Surgery running a close second. 1974 - Another toss-up. I'll go with Camel - Mirage as 1a and Yes - Relayer as 1b. But that's just today. Might change tomorrow. 1975 - Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here But I can't not mention two of the Steve Hs -- Hackett with Voyage of the Acolyte and Hillage with Fish Rising 1976 - Kansas - Leftoverture. No discussion.... unless of course you consider Rush - 2112 to be legit prog, in which case I've got another dilemma. 1977 - Rush - A Farewell to Kings. Period. I know it's outside the scope of this thread, but I have to continue and add: 1978 - U.K. - U.K. because there's no way I'm ending this string without tacking that one on, even if 1978 is outside the golden age. My apologies to artists who should have been included somewhere: Gentle Giant, PFM, Zappa, and Magma. |

It could be others.
1969: Amon Düül II - Phallus Dei. Sorry to the Crimson King, but God's Phallus is bigger than yours. 1970: Magma - Kobaïa. I could never Sl*g this. I think that Magma erupted in a good way with this double-album debut, and for me they never beat it. 1971: Comus - First Utterance or Igor Wakhevitch's Docteur Faust (can't decide between these creepy classics). Okay, I'll go with Comus. Comus wants to play, play, play, and I'm willing to play, play, play this album again and again. I might be disturbed. 1972: Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant assassin des mouches. This fly killer slays. 1973: Can - Future Days. When I first heard this many years ago I didn't like it much, but in future days I became rather incontinent and so appreciated the Can much more. 1974: Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom. No this is not an exercise guide for firmer buttocks. Who knew that a rocky bottom could feel like this? 1975: Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning. The moosic of the revolution. Having been a teacher, I value learning. 1976: Zanov - Green Ray. This ray hit me square between the eyes with its greeny goodness. 1977: Franco Leprino - Integrati... Disintegrati. You may integrate me and you may disintegrate me, but you'll never break me, umm.... |

1969 - Colosseum - Valentyne Suite 1970 - Emerson, Lake and Palmer - s/t 1971 - 1972 - 1973 - Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery 1974 - King Crimson - Red 1975 - Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 1976 - Genesis - A Trick of The Tail 1977 - Hawkwind - Quark, Strangeness and Charm 1977 was the toughest to choose and normally I would go for Animals but that Hawkwind album is pretty special given that I really hate pretty much everything else I've heard by them! Also honourable mention for Colosseum II who released 2 great albums in that year. Criminally ignored band that really took the fusion thing by storm imo. Moore + Airey + Hiseman ( and the other guy). Just ave it!! edit - whoops messed up on my years!

All of those for me too, and in fact I had planned to have Cos on the list. Had I not had Postaolean Train Robbery listed as 1974, it would have taken Henry Cow's place. Crossings I also wanted, and Miles, and considered Monster Movie. And I planned to have Soft Machine's Third mentioned. And it is sad not to have a VdGG there. Originally I started doing three choices per year, but then I wanted to do the silly descriptions thing. Suffice to say, there's lot of great music, although my choices wouldn't align with most peoples. |
