Arguably, Dave Gilmour has the minimum amount of skill that still lets you belong in "great guitarists" pantheon purely relying on your sound/tone/soloing style. I think he's entrenched in a comfort zone, but he's able to pull off some impressive music with very modest tools. More power to him. Clapton isn't the most technical on Earth, but at least he used to be on top in 1965-74 era, roughly. Someone mentioned Beck. Of the three, he'd be my pick, although with a caveat... there are some nights when wild, groundbreaking guitar experiments backfire and he sounds less than impressive. Ritchie Blackmore said that Jeff Beck's style is out of this Earth IF he has a good night, but he also takes many risks so... you get the picture.

^ Beck was a great mistake-maker. |

Clapton marked a whole generation with his fluid playing in the 60s and early 70s (Blues Breaker, Yarbird, Cream). Then, his career was up and down until his return in the 90s. His performance at MTV Unplugged was exceptional as was the album From the Cradle. Then, his career continued to be up and down by making adult-pop albums with the help of external songwriter. Gilmour was the musical soul of Pink Floyd with Rick Wright during the good years of the group. He may be technically less good, but his playing is much more expressive, melodic and innovative. The blues is one of his influences but he is not a bluesman like Clapton can be. Gilmour has an overview of music. He is able to produce records, make arrangements and he plays several instruments (keyboard, synth, bass, drum). His singing is also much better. Although he was less prolific than Roger Waters, Gilmour is a much better songwriter (music) than Clapton. Finally, Gilmour is a gentleman |
