Looking at my iPod touch, which I haven't updated in quite a few years as the battery is pretty much gone, I checked for tracks with the word "Darkness" in it. I'm sure there are many songs/ tracks with the word darkness in it. For instance, there's Lucifer's Friend's "Prince of Darkness" and looking it up at PA, Spock's Beard released a song called "Beware of Darkness". I have an "other" option for other "Darkness" tracks if you don't find anything you particularly like off my list, and feel free to mention any others.

It's not meant to be a contest, and so what if one of these takes most of the votes.

By the way, if you vote other, please mention it, and maybe provide a link to the music, or an embed, if you find one to make it more easily discoverable.

The Graaf from the list.

Peter Gabriel's Darkness is a strong one too and one of my favorite from him.

Walking through the undergrowth,
to the house in the woods
The deeper I go,
the darker it gets
I peer through the window
Knock at the door
And the monster I was
So afraid of
Lies curled up on the floor
Is curled up on the floor
Just like a baby boy..

^ Now that would have given some more competition to this poll methinks. I tend to associate Peter Gabriel with Peter Hammill, and not just because they are both Peter.

Erm, this song by the band The Darkness?

I had to look it up. Of course technically you wouldn't get points since it's not a track with the word Darkness in it, but you more than make up for it in hilarity.

Gates Of Darkness I is perhaps my favorite AZ track ever
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive
Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

^ I'm glad to see "Gates of Darkness" get some love. That, "Darkness (11/11)" and "All the Colours of Darkness" and "Darkness (11/11)" are strong per my tastes. I assumed the the VdGG track would be much more popular than it appears to be (one vote in three hours). The forum really has slowed down.

I don't know the other songs, but VdGG's one is one of my favourites from them.

I would still have voted for one of my first VdGG tunes I started obsessing with, but this is one of my favorite Residents-instrumentals:

I wish a popping dancer discovered this and made a dance routine of it

Miles Davis - Prince of Darkness
Terje Rypdal - Darkness Falls
+
Curtis Mayfield - Right On For The Darkness
Joan Baez - Children of Darkness

This is supertough, both Art Zoyd's and VDGG's track are 10/10 iconic tracks for me and it's almost impossible to vote against one of them. Will vote AZ because they are currently behind 1:2.

I looked for "darkness" in my digital collection and there's this - starts a bit cliched but gets better with time:

...and anther one that for me is also a 10/10 icon but not prog and doesn't therefore qualify here (or does it?)
...I also love the Residents one, by the way.

^ I'd be interested to hear any choices off the list as well (prog or not, I don't mind). I like to do polls not just to hopefully expose people to some music they might not know but also to discover new-to-me ones and to rediscover music.

Some stuff has been mentioned that is in my collection, but not on that iPod, such as Dzyan (only Dzyan album I have on that iPod is Electric Silence), and I do have The Residents' The Tunes of Two Cities. Wish I'd explored more deeply, but glad to see them get mentioned.

As for Art of Noise, I do put it under the progressive electronic related label at least. I like that. Been many years since I heard that Manfred Mann; takes me back.

And I enjoyed listening to The Youngbloods track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLVWxuMsiDQ Being into late 60s psych, and folky music, I've come across them before.

As for Spock's Beard, got mentioned in my first post, but man, I could never get into that band (too Arena hard Rock, AORish, and Neo-Proggish Symph for me), which is not to say that others shouldn't enjoy it. Still, I do think its good to try to step out of one's comfort zone and try things that wouldn't normally suit one's own tastes, and that is why I included other.

My favourite line of the Sound of Silence is 'Hello Darkness my old friend, I've come to talk to you again". No title but expressivly sung no matter what.

My favourite song is probably the Spock's Beard cover of George Harrison's "Beware of darkness" too, with an honourable mention to:

Dragon (NZ), "Darkness" from their 2nd album "Scented Gardens For The Blind".

I first thought of "Starless" by King Crimson, but that would open a whole new can of worms since it only implicitly refers to "darkness"...
