Hard rock as it was known back then or heavy rock as we called it when I was a kid which was all about the sound created rather than pigeonholing bands into genres. There are some obvious bands missing but that's because they didn't release an album in 72. Yes King Crimson are there. Have you heard Earthbound? It's a monster. Also don't think that the order reflects my own favourites, as my top 5 would be Uriah Heep Scorpions Black Sabbath November Slade

Actually, I think it was probably the very first hard rock song I heard....and we went nuts, I was 11 at the time and hearing those lyrics....man.

Machine Head. My taste in hard rock is somewhat limited, but I've always found Deep Purple intriguing. The keyboard and guitar work by Jon Lord and Richie Blackmore respectively being a big attraction. Only minus is the fact that it contains "Smoke on the Water". Not that it's a bad song, far from it, but I grew up in a time when it was played WAY too much - also by unmusical school kids who could just manage to play the iconic riff.

Yes, Smoke has been played to death over the decades, so it almost feels embarrassing to listen to it, especially in the car in summer at high volume with the windows down :) Still a fantastic album BUT my fav DP album is "In Rock"

I think I agree on In Rock ("Child in Time" is probably my favourite Purple track), but Fireball is not bad either :)

Lonesome Crow is a great album but tends to get overlooked in favour of the absolutely stunning album they released 3 years later, "In Trance". Now if we're going to talk about 70s hard/heavy rock in general, then "In Trance" is in the top 10. It is the benchmark that a lot of current retro-heavy and stoner bands in Europe measure themselves against. If you have never heard it, do yourself a favour. I almost went with Captain Beyond...or Argus.....but my friend and employee wanted to choose Sabbath vol 4....so there it is.
;) oh...and BOC is a killer album also...a unique band and a unique cover art and music. I recall when it first came out and my brother and his roommate were playing it while we were stoned and cars passed his house in Bloomington at IU on the way to the football game at the stadium. Alice Cooper - "School's Out"
1972 I think Alice Cooper (band) had hit their stride as a band, At this time they were firing on all cylinders. While I more prefer the two albums that preceded and followed "Schools Out" ( Killer (1971) & Billion Dollar Babies (1973)), S.O. showed that they worked well together. |

Some bands' albums on this poll are their first, others' are a few albums in. Seems a tad unfair. Either way, Sabbath is probably going to take this one.
