Sure. No problem. I just want to say that after listening to it several times it's definitely the track I was thinking of after all these years so the 40 year old mystery is over. It got stuck in my head a little differently but nonetheless it's the same track. Not sure where I first heard it but it's possible my dad had the album.

Yeah, I guess you could say I have gone full circle with him trying to figure it out. I remember a few months ago or so playing a whole bunch of his stuff from the late seventies on youtube thinking it was him but really only playing bits and pieces. This time I just happened to stumble on this one again. I started my search again last night using key words on youtube like "seventies violin" and thought I had it when the name Noel Pointer poppped up. I remember my dad liking him so I figured I hit the jackpot and while he's quite good(or was unfortunately since he passed away in the 90's)it wasn't him. He was maybe a bit in the smooth jazz direction anyway. So I did more searching and almost gave up when I decided to give JL Ponty another shot. So there it is folks; never give up on your song search(or any other kind of search). I actually got to hear some interesting violin stuff in the process so I wouldn't consider this a waste of time.

I'm pretty sure this it although it's not quite how it was playing in my head all these years.

It isn't something like "Don and Dewey," by It's A Beautiful Day, is it?  This is my last suggestion, I promise.

I really don't think it was Grappeli based on what I listened to on youtube. Also, it was very catchy(otherwise I probably wouldn't have remembered it after all these years) so it might even have had radio airplay or been some kind of a hit. If I ever do figure out what it is I'll post it here.

That's probably a good bet...I thought too blue-grassy, too, potentially (and Mark O'Connor)...Maybe Stephane Grappelli, for another jazz-ish violinist?

Just played him on youtube. I don't think it's by him. It sounded good though but a little too bluegrassy. Speaking of which I don't think it's Mark O'Connor either for the same reason. I think I might have to hum the melody to my dad and see if he remembers.

I was going to post this on the main page but not sure it's prog. It's actually more like jazz or even fusion. Anyway, here it goes. I have had this piece of music stuck in my head for almost forty years without knowing what it is. My dad was big into jazz so it might come from his collection or maybe not. It is probably from the mid to late 70's and features prominent violin with a repetitive melody. It's rather melodic and bouncy sounding but really that's all I have. I first heard it in the late 70's so I was maybe only 8 or 9 when I heard it. I think it might have been a minor hit or played on the radio(maybe on my dad's jazz station). I have never been able to figure out what it is even after all these years. I'm pretty sure it's entirely instrumental though. And before anyone asks I played enough tracks from Jean Luc Ponty on youtube to rule him out although I suppose it's still possible I somehow missed it and it's him. I don't think it is though.
