If you demand professional expertise to express an opinion on a subject, that disqualifies almost everyone from discussing almost anything, wouldn't you say?
So which professions would you be prepared to accept as qualified to post in this thread?

I wasn't picking on anyone...my point was that anyone's opinion is as good as anyone else unless one can show how they have 'expertise' in that area....Atavachron was saying your opinion didn't count and imho was rude about it yet his reply said nothing about his own credibility  either.
My point was unless one has special education or knowledge why is their comment worth more than anyone elses..?
So I'm guessing your field of expertise must be etiquette, psychology or human relations given the put downs you are handing out in these areas.

and on it goes... real popcorn munching going on... really see the only way this ends...  fittingly considering the times and the orange mess our lovely informed and thinking voters did by voting Trump in.. with a consitutional crisis.. or would be except even his stacked SCOTUS will shoot his ass down after the courts take less than an hour to slap injunctions on the President ignoring the Constitution.  Always had talked a good game about 'doing this or doing that' which would fly against the Constitution.. but in this case.. he has backed himself into such a corner. Short of laying down and giving up like the little bitch he is...  now seeing the House is not going give him what he wants.. he will be forced to try to bypass Congress and that isn't going to fly

a little story relating my experience with the shutdown.. word of warning.. DO NOT FLY if you don't have to.

We will be lucky if we get through this without some sort of real catastrophe.   While in Rome and right before we left I read stories about how the 'blue flu' was going around to the poor f**ks that work for the TSA and I told Raff to expect the worst when we returned.. remembering the near disaster that was 2016 when after a 11 hour flying experience and feeling rather mean needing a cigarette more than than I even wanted a hot redhead... it took us 2.5 hours to get through passport control and customs.. and when confronted with a snot nosed kid with a TSA uni and a gun who asked the same questions we answered at a kiosk an hour earlier and did so with a smerk..  I nearly launched myself across the table and strangled him..

scared the sh*t out of Raff.. she saw me tense up to leap at him... and she knows my past.. and knows under my sweet exterior is a real tough guy and brawler...she saw how close I came to really losing it.. and thus losing it all hahah

so after that we broke up the return trip to two days both times now flying to Copenhagen.. enjoying a nice evening in the city then flying home the next day.

well fully expecting hell and many hours in line due to shortstaffed TSA at  Dulles we left Rome and the next day we got the Copenhagen airport to take our flight back the U.S.  But funny thing happened.. took damn near 45 minutes to get throught passport control in Copenhagen.. it had NEVER taken that long

and after a nice relaxing 9 hour flight back to Dulles...  we made it through passport control in 30 minutes..  oh threre were tons of people.. the line just kept on moving.. so when we got to the TSA dude... he politiely asked where we came from... oh Rome.. was it beautiful as they say..  great... well welcome back

for the first time in 10 plus years of flying international into Dulles.. we actually picked our luggage off of teh carousel.  never had happened before.. the passport control taking hours..  everyone's luggage was always pulled off and sitting in a pile on the floor.

but it gets better.. less than an hour after touching down.. we were in a cab back home.. for after luggage was to come customs..

customs? pfff.. there was none.. we just walked out..

so with a wave you got in.. and no one to care what you brought back if one wsan't honest.

good times...

and all because of that wall

take it away boys..

It has crossed my mind that the real security threat is at the airports with not enough screening due to the blue flu.

yep...  and the national emergency is nothing but historically gross incompetence and a humanitarian disaster?

yeah..of its own making.

that is not to say there is not a problem... but as with most things.. the solution is in the middle.. much like guns.. but both sides are so anchored to their angry extemes that no one seems to see the easy solution to illegal immigration.

want to stop illegal immigration and get them paying in to the system.. easy.. make it easier to become legal.  No one is climbing a wall and working below the table and fearing discovery and deporting if they could easily enter legally..

but illegal immigration isn't really what this is about of course...  it is trying to keep America white.. thus compromises like the one they had last Feb that would have got Trump his wall money.. but would have made illegals.. legal. .thus paying taxes and all that jazz? oh hell no..  shot down by the bigots, racists, and nativists.. I mean the conservative wing of the Republican Party... ..  I mean what is left of the republican party.  They got angry...  and spooked trump.. who then withdrew his support for teh compromise.

no wonder Chuck and Nancy are not going to compromise with him..  whatever he says today.. agreeing with one..  he is just as likely to change the next day with Rush, FAUX and all the right wing hater get their panties in a twist about more darkies entering the country.. doesn't matter about legal or illegal.. it is about race.. pure and f**king simple.. hah...

I found it interesting that even Faux challenged many of his claims on his border speech the other night.

This wall is all about 45 getting his way for appeasing his base.

His statement re pulling FEMA funds from Camp Fire victims sickened me.  I have friends who lost everything in that fire.  He is just odious.

yeah... I agreed strongly with that dude whose ooinion piece I posted last week...  there are already cracks in FAUX's facade of being the Trump propaganda network.. and much I suspect is Murdock hedging his bets and not wanting his network to go down in flames with the Trump Presidency.

with that rather humorous bitch slap of Sarah Sanders and just flat out lying to people's faces...we are likely seeing the beginning of what what may well happen...  FAUX will likely break with him once Mueller drops his bomb on Trump and it will be obvious to all.. not just to those who merely follow what is going on..that he could be impeached or not.. but is likely being arrested by the FBI the second he leaves the White House

and his 40% support.. will rapidly drop to sub 30.

I'm not sure about if his core base will dwindle, but I'm with you on the rest.  I just don't think they are big(ly) enough to admit they made a mistake.

Veering off topic, I hope you and your lovely Raff had a chance to have some real pasta while in Rome.  My mother's best friend, Artemia Kreminic (can't make up a name like that, she married a Croatian), had been a cook in wealthy Italian homes in the 1940's.  We stayed with her for a while when I was pretty young.  One of my favourite memories is hanging out in the kitchen with her, watching her make pasta by hand and hanging all of the various ribbons all over on little racks.  Watching her cut the pasta and fold into different shapes was hypnotic.  She made my sisters and me anything for supper that we wanted for our birthdays, her pasta was just heaven on a plate.

It's not political or partisan or bipartisan. It's not about the cost and about who pays.
It's not about national security, practicality, or common sense.
It's not about the electorate, the base, the workers, the citizens or the government itself.
It's not about the building material, the effectiveness or any impenetrability.
It's not about morals, what's right or wrong, immigration, or any crisis.
It's all about one stubborn old man wanting to get his way regardless the cost.

oh I can definitely see it happening.  For all the jokes we make...not every Trump supporter is a f**king bigot, racist, or bigot. They are just ignorant and so jaded about politics that they don't pay attention. Sure as hell didn't during the campaign or would have seen what we saw and that this guy had ZERO businessbeing anywhere near the White House and was a con man and corrupt as f**k haha.

For most Trump supporters they live in a bubble..  and FAUX supplies the oxygen in their bubble world.  Finally the bullsh*t, distortion and flat out lies have started to be called out by them but the fact is they live in a world of their own.

Here is a nice example of it I read on another forum... a man speaking of a Trump voter, Clinton hater.. and the ignorance in which Trump voter lives

I pointed out all the things my father in law said about Bill Clinton (he lied to a grand jury, he deserved to be indicted) and the contradiction in his position vis-a-vis Donald Trump and he was flabbergasted I would make the comparison. I also pointed out all the indictments around him. He had no idea. I told him to look outside Fox News

this is real life here.. real people and the sad state of an educated informed electorate. Their heads are in the sand and are f**king scared and angry sheep played by FAUX who in peruit of ratings merely had repeated to them what they wanted to hear and in that doubled as Trump's propaganda network.. but not free thinkers... and they take their cue vis a vie from FAUX. When FAUX turns on him.. he will lose significant support

why.. because they DON"T THINK.. but are led by their noses....if they had they never would have voted for him..

oh good god... I love that name. LOLBeer

oh yes we did.  While Raff's parents have passed on, her brother's mother-in-law still cooks up a feast (x5 nights) during our stays there.  Lot of great homemade stuff including pasta!

so much in fact that when I returned to work this week my coworkers made me the butt of many a joke

first that I had cut my hair before going.. had a good ponytail going.. now I look.. umm.. respectable and less threatening. ..sh*t.

but also that I had noticeably gained weight during our vacation..  they said they could see in my face. I told them.. you go and spend a couple of weeks there and with her family and NOT gain weight haha.

I always say I can't make up the stuff from my life, including Artemia and her fantastic name!  Growing up in such a diverse yet small town no doubt made me have an open-minded attitude towards other cultures (and the family history of tolerance and education).

And hence dismay at 45....

Italian food is sooooooo wonderful.  Plus Artemia had wonderful Italian/American epithets for everyone who crossed her, like "Brutto pest!"  Smile

All of the Italian and Yugoslavian homes had kitchen gardens in both front and back yards...and I went to many a birthday party with homemade chips and salsa and pinatas.

Don't worry, you'll grow the ponytail again and slim down again, and in the meantime you have those great food and family memories forever.

oh yeah I'm more worried about the hair being short and looking clean cut than I am the weight. Which funnily enough.. my dear wife didn't notice upon reading my post. So I've still got it...

I've been wearing the same size jeans since I was 16... perhaps retirement will get me .. but I work too hard and eat too badly (only eat one meal a day) when in my normal work routine to lose my greek godlike body hahah  so anything I did gain will get burned off quickly.

Yeah... my first exposure to 'real' Italian food.. not the (admittedly tasty) sh*t they sling at chain restaurants here was a real eye opener.  I didn't pull the trigger this year.. but suppose I will next year and try the true Roman  specialty .... Trippa alla Romana.  I plan on accompanying that will a bottle of wine just for myself haha

Indeed, going through immigration this year was surreal to say the least - especially in the light of the reasons why the shutdown happened in the first place. We could have stuffed our luggage with hard cash, gold, diamonds, sausages, prosciutto, bottles of wine and liquor (that arugula-based amaro from Ischia was killer!), and no one would have even noticed. The TSA people were clearly going through the motions, as would anyone forced to work without pay for heaven knows how long.

Anyway, this year the food felt even more plentiful than on past occasions. By New Year's Day, I felt so thoroughly stuffed that I was almost glad to be leaving in just three days. The lasagna was particularly luscious - paper-thin pasta sheets layered with fresh mozzarella and a wonderful homemade ragu, very simple yet delicious.
