Was channel surfing the other week and stopped by the ultraconservative Fox panel talk show The Five as it was breaking for a commercial, to the sounds of Kashmir with Plant's vocals thrown in for good measure. Same goes while attending last week's Eagles-Rams game as a snippet of said song could be heard just prior to kick-off.

For a time when I lived in Nashville, I worked at a Whole Foods Market (I've worn many hats).  On Sundays, they would have bands play in an area with lots of seating at brunch time.  One Sunday, one of my favourite customers came through my line with his teen-aged son and he thought I'd like to listen to them.  To my surprise, part way through their set they played "I Talk To The Wind."  They did a great job of it.  His father later came by and I thanked him for educating his son well musically.  He said, "Oh yeah, they all love prog."

Should I revise the topic to Prog in unexpected places?  I have been running into the occasional references and/or actually being played on TV in unexpected places? Big smile
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Not really. Not imo anyway but sure it's one of them. I remember one year I saw two or three different bands/artists perform this track in a way that was more fresh than the original. One was by Ian Anderson but I don't remember who the other one was(some band at a prog festival though).

How about Black Sabbath and The Who? Or more particular the track (I think) Life With The Moons on the Who's Maximum R and B box set had Cornucopia playing as very prominent back ground music.

I was meant to write this before but in October at the London Film Festival they played Can's Vitamin C and Holger Czukay's Cool in the Pool directly after two different films, probably to empty the theatre!? Or somebody with taste sneaked their stuff in, it made me leave slower for sure.

The HopCat bar/restaurant chain has renamed its' French fries which were previously called "Crack Fries"...they are now called Cosmik fries in tribute to Frank Zappa's Cosmik Debris.

I heard Jethro Tull's "locomotive breath"(the part with the flute solo)on an episode of "the kids are alright." I guess not that big of a deal. I would really be impressed if they had Gentle Giant or VDGG.

Wow. I heard "time and a place" by ELP today at the local grocery store. At first I thought I was hearing the Nice. It wasn't very loud then I realized what it was. I'm not sure if it was the original version or not but definitely Greg Lake singing. Anyway a big surprise. They played something that sounded interesting after that but I couldn't make out what it was. Anyway, this is maybe the most unexpected prog song I have heard in a grocery store in a while. However, I think maybe the grocery store is starting to become an expected place for prog. Smile

Thanks!  My wife and I were watching Spike Lee's film "Black Klansman," and they played a nice chunk of ELP's "Lucky Man!"  Nice to hear it in the film!

I have to admit if I heard "lucky man" in the grocery store I would definitely notice but I wouldn't think too much of it and probably not post that here. "Time and a place" is a bit more obscure so it seemed noteworthy(to me). I do think hearing "lucky man" in that Spike Lee movie qualifies though because that's definitely an unexpected place to hear it. So for me it's about either the place or the song(if the song is obscure enough it would be unexpected pretty much anywhere I hear it in public).

"It was 1974 and I was in my college years." I lived in Santiago de Chile (the southernmost country in South America, near the South Pole). I was surprised when I got on a public bus (there the driver does his job while listening to "cumbias" on the radio) but this time I hear ELP play "Tarkus". It was a great experience, until the driver suddenly seems to realize what kind of music that was and changes it in the middle of "Manticore" (after 12 minutes of joy). I never had such an experience in a Chilean bus again. So sorry.

My supermarket today played Aqualung, probably because Jethro Tull are in town. Still a stunning and surprising choice for making people buy stuff.

Pink Floyd's "Dogs" (very short instrumental excerpt) was used in an Oregon Public Broadcasting story that aired today about therapy dogs being used post-earthquakes in Southern California. Very strange choice! Completely unexpected.

There was another prog excerpt they used recently, but I neglected to make more of it and have forgotten what it was.

On a beach, before the usual "salsa/disco" stuff used to make gym, somebody has played the first CD of "Pulse". Maybe the same guy who played it in a Marlboro dressing shop last year south to Rome, who knows?
Another unusual thing was during a breakfast at the Queen Hotel in Chester, when a radio played Jon Anderson's Song of 7.
