I've been away from the forum for a while,
and I've been searching for an answer,
but is there a reason that the music stream
is no longer available at the top of the homepage?

thanks,

Rod

It was shut down last year because of legal reasons and it's not coming back.

OK, thanks for the answer. A shame, really,
but just about everyone here knows that.
It was elegantly done too!

Hi,

Often wondered why PA did not have or showed a taste for a radio type show ... but I can understand the legal side of it, although one would have to pay the copyrights and such ... which most shows on the Internet do NOT do so, and while it helps marginal and weak bands, it has a tendency to hurt the better known ones when it comes to sales and such.

When I did my thing, I had paid for the rights of the stream software (Real Audio then, which had a Unix version that we used for better security!), and I had no problems with it, and was never asked about any "rights" and no band EVER reached me and was upset by  the play of their music ... however, I NEVER did a hit show ... and for the most part, I showcased bands, with an hour or more of their material, and got a lot of comments from various members of these bands that appreciated the many things played.

I ended up with over 200 hours of air time, with something like 75 shows, of which at least 50 or more were way over 2 hours ... how can you do Caravan, Hawkwind, Man, Ozric Tentacles, PFM, Ange, Banco under 2 hours? Impossible.

And this was when I thought that a top ten for these bands was not a good idea ... I did not want to think that one was better than the other and that both deserved an audience, and put together with several folks from ECM, I put together a show that ran over 3 years until the new owner of the ISP pulled the plug on it, when he thought that my 25 streams was stealing his "precious" bandwidth ... which he had stolen to support his side projects for another company more than likely ... he was that dishonest!

I have not done anything since, and might return to the air soon, but I am concerned with many folks not "allowing" this or that, which means that my showcasing a DaveSax would be something that I would not be able to do, and sadly, in this day and age, when less people show a smaller number of artists in favor of top ten, then those small ones ... end up getting nothing, or significantly less than otherwise.

I do not have an answer for that, based on my proximity to radio for a long time, and I did not have any issues, legal or otherwise with my show, and again, was thanked many times by many of the artists themselves.

But I do wish that we could put together a show about the top 100 bands ... so to speak, which would be one way for many artists to reconsider their take, when they are in a list of 100 bands, instead of having to compete with 5 different YES songs, 5 different GENESIS songs, and different KING CRIMSON songs, and 5 different BRUHAHA songs, in a list that ends up with only 40 bands! At that point, if I felt I was far more "progressive" about a lot of these choices, yes, I would say something, and be upset ... but if I am listed next to 99 other bands ... I think I will reconsider my position and the appreciation and time some folks took to let others know what they thought of my work.

But, sadly enough, I'm not sure we can do this as a "child of a database" ... I think that we would need someone with a wider connection to the music, but a seriously strong connection to the database stuff, although I still think that a show can be done, and the legal things resolved ... once you pay your ASCAP and BMI, for example (it was that way before!), in general, no one will say anything ... except some "independents" won't like it because their work is not represented and ... again ... we have the same issue all over again ... there's always a bitch on the path!

this is as much as I know and have experienced ... hopefully this is not out of line, and helps with ideas that can be done ... instead of ideas that prevent things from being done, although it is a different day and age, and things have changed, and I have to accept that!

Well, for 14 years, I've just narrowcasted from my desktop.
There are plenty of methods to go about providing a variety
that doesn't necessarily rely, solely, on the tastes of one person
presented in a limiting way (such as Mixcloud, for instance),
so I don't think there's a problem with that.

I just miss having thousands of sometimes rarely heard tunes
show up randomly in a playlist that seemed to be elegantly
presented on the home page.

Anyway, too bad that the legal concerns couldn't be dealt with
by using some other manner of presentation (Shoutcast, etc.).

thanks for the answer,

Rod

Hi,

"Narrowcasting" is similar to the late fight for "Micro Radio", which was a signal that was local, and had very limited distance, but was apparently did really well in the Bay Area, to the point that the FCC sent the big horde of lawyers to stop it, and they chased people down for a long time, until ... everything disappeared, and now you can't even find a search for it on Google ... !

The whole issue, was the FCC forcing the collection of the moneys for the licenses, which cost hundreds of thousands for a small time FM station alone, which is the reason why you don't see new stations, and you only see old stations sold and formats changed ... losing that license means one less station!

I have thought of doing this, for example, via Live 365 at one time, and equivalent, but I did not like the intentional break up for their little adverts in the middle of a song, and found that malicious and insulting. Specially when you and I could easily create a silent spot for the inclusion of the commercial, but they don't want to spend 14 seconds to edit something, and would rather their automated whatever ruined a show ... it was amazing listening to a Dream Theater long piece, that was broken up -- complete with fading! -- for their advert, and then brought the song back up mid-everything.

It scares me even more, that no one in the "audience" even said anything! There was no place to show your words, I guess or something like it ... and to me, that is a gross injustice to the art itself ... no respect whatsoever.

The only concern I have, and it is more a thought than anything else, is that in many ways, PA ends up cutting down its avenues for inclusion and attention to the value of the music, and as such, the idea of "progressive" anything ends up falling further and further down the road of non-existence.

Well, to be fair, that has happened to all music in the past 500 to 600 years that we now have records of, but we remember and appreciate their existence, and that seems to be the only thing that will help PA, but we may be looking at 100 more years, and I am not sure, or can verify, that PA will be there!

I consider the period of music in our discussions to be one of the most valuable in the 20th century, and it includes film, theater, literature and other disciplines. And, for me, my only desire is to illustrate and make sure that it is visible, and not display a "preference" between something that is Italian, French, German, American or Argentinian ... they are all valuable and none of them is bigger, or better than the other, other than a "fame" content that we're afraid to let go.

I can tell you, from a radio perspective, and it comes from SPACE PIRATE RADIO that the fame card is not as important ... SPR was on for almost 24 years against the harshest of all odds ... commercialism! AND, did what no one EVER has considered or even tried! NONE OF THE HITS NONE OF THE TIME!

And it had fans, and it had a faithful following for a long time .... and the illusion (and supposed security of an audience) of fame, is nothing but an excuse for doing absolutely nothing about anything, including helping other folks see/hear something different ... go ask some of the folks GG interviewed for his show, and specially the ones that ... heard that stuff on radio while driving on 101? ... you gotta be kidding me ... the only time they had actually heard it on radio, maybe?

This is the side that is being taken down, in the end ... that extra measure ... and hopefully I can do my bit towards it all, but I am getting to the age when it is taking too much energy to even setup a show, and I do not want to play a top ten or 20 or 30 ... I want to free form the flow of life and mind. Not some orderly crap invented for the sake of the printed media to convince many of us that this is better than that so they can get sales ... and DaveSax, or others, don't.

It's time for a change ... or is it ... Childhood's End?

Wow, that was wordy...
Anyway, there are all kinds of possibilities out there -
whether it’s Radio King or Shoutcast and other options.
It just takes someone with an extensive collection
who's willing to take a crack at it.

That depends on your attention level and quota of desire for something valuable in our lives. LOVE is only word'y when people have forgotten what it really means! AND, how to show it!

2K CD's and 1500 LP's ... but my age and desire is now against bothering with it. Mostly because the attention span and attitudes (including many places like here), the appreciation for other people's works is often measured against the "well known" and the "top something or other", and never taken into context of its own value and material ... the ability for you or I to get any kind of response will die when we play from RASPUTIN's GIRL's album that some folks in PA don't like and think it belongs in the American Musical cartoon song list, and the rest of the work gets wasted for one joke and fun song that was put there to make fun of those very same folks ... and yes, I would probably start with the BONZO's The Sound of Music and then FAUST simply to get rid of the metal choir in PA! And probably follow it up with ECM ... you never know ... you never know ... and I do not plan these things in advance ... I like them to happen on their own.

BTW, enjoyed the Ambient stuff ... the pop sounding stuff is not my cup of tea ... and for my tastes that synthesizer needs to undergo a slight lobotomy, so that its "sound", kinda disappears into the music, instead of sounding like a solo over the whole thing ... but, yes, that is my own take on things ... solos are not necessary, the WHOLE MUSIC is ... and having one instrument, kinda separated from the whole is just a rock thing from the 20th century, that has distorted the whole content of the overall experience, called "music" in my experience.

One does not look for solos in Bach, Beethoven, Mahler, Stravinsky ... and yet, you can see how "solos" can be implemented (specially Stravinsky) and yet they are not a separate part of the whole thing ... and one (me, I guess) would wish that rock music could see that a bit more ... I get really tired of formulaic music that breaks into a solo/song ... and loses its drive and soul, into an idealistic something that no one will ever see, or really appreciate and study.

It's weird ... I listen to the wind, and there are other sounds in the middle of it, but never have I heard, even a "boom" in it, that did not "fit", or seem to be a part of the whole thing ... specially when it rained, and you even got some thunder and lightning ... somehow they fit, and did not seem out of place!

Music, for me, has become some kind of mental exercise, and I think that folks want to remove it from the "intuitive" areas, so they can better validate their work ... but I'm not sure you can separate the two ... it's the same person, except that many of us do not like looking at mirrors!
